This is a video about how to identify how you are in certain speed limits by the look of the road
The video also speaks about the speed limits that are in a red ring or the national speed limit and how they are not intended to be a target - they merely the maximum you can travel on the safest part of the road at any time. So you can go as slow as you need to on any road if a hazard permits it. A hazard can be anything…bends, fog, darkness, rain and other
Rural roads are the most dangerous roads we have in the UK - they are reported statistically to have over 50% of the main accidents on the road making them the most dangerous
The motorway has around 5% of the road accidents

A good rule of thumb is NSL. No street lights, national speed limit...unless you're told differently. But as you say, a safe speed can vary tremendously, depending on conditions.

They are a Maximum Permitted Speed. You drive to the road conditions otherwise.

Another trick is when driving along a faster road ro look jnto a side roads to see what speed limit applies there. Then you are usually in a higher speed limit, otherwise there would be no sign 😅.

There's a 20mph zone near me which has signs when you enter it, but none within the zone.

@@phillwainewright4221 is it a housing estate with no through road? Or perhaps a cul-de-sac? Or a section or area with lots of residential grouped houses with speed bumps present and no through road?

@@DSMcheltenham No. Just normal residendial roads which used to be 30mph roads, some more than half a mile away from the nearest school. Signs on the entrances to the 20ph zone, but nothing within it. No speed humps or any other traffic calming measures.

@@phillwainewright4221 interesting… no road markings of 20 written on the road either I suspect from the way you are writing. I wish I could see the road! Maybe I’ll google earth it!! X

Can I just double check what is started at 3:15 please? "If there's a crash barrier OR there's grass in the middle...". My understanding is that a dual carriageway's speed limit is 70mph ONLY when there's a solid physical barrier in the middle. If only grass separates the two sides - with no actual crash barrier - then the road is technically not a dual carridgeway, and speed limit is 60mph. This is something I was told during a Speed Awareness Course I attended a little over a year ago.

@@cleowho my children’s father is a speed awareness coach - it is a common misconception that a dual carriageway needs two lanes on both sides ie 4 lanes in total. If there is a physical barrier between the roads it is 70mph- this can be just a grassed section. So if it is only a painted white line between two lanes then it is 60mph. I wish I could show pictures here but ‘Google’ search ‘dual carriageways’ and you will see on the pictures that there is grass in between two very county looking lanes and the speed limit is 70mph because it is classed as a dual carriageway. I remember finding out this news from my ex husband and having extensive talks about it. The white painted line is a sign that it is a 60mph and a crash barrier or a physical kerb or grass In-between the roads makes it a 70mph - please Google this and see the pictures and the advice - images.app.goo.gl/VbybRbe5wBv5Tisj8

@@cleowho No problem at all. Thank you for asking as it may help others. I know when I heard it I was flabbergasted as well!! Found this just now as well on RU-vid - it’s a terrible voiced video but you can see it’s only grass making it a dual carriageway before the merge back onto the single carriageway xxxx images.app.goo.gl/fP1wBbX8b9xjKuXK9

I love your explanation of the national speed limit sign, the white is a lamppost and the black line going through it means no lampposts, that’s so clever! 🙃 It’s also written in the name, how I like to remember it is like this..national speed limit..nsl..no street lights! 😀 I love how you’ve explained everything in the video, I’d just like to talk about a tip and a trick that I learnt from a driving instructor called Shannon on driving school tv’s channel, it’s called the 6 poles hack, I’ll leave a link to the video if you’re interested in watching it, basically you can use 6 poles to work out the speed limit if you’ve accidentally missed the sign, here is the link to the video:- m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4hxYfi2JiWE.html&pp=ygUMNiBwb2xlcyBoYXhr Remember, most of the time it’s unsafe to be driving at the maximum speed limit, that’s all it is, it’s just the maximum that we can drive if it’s safe to do so, most of the time it’s not safe to drive at the maximum speed limit, you have to drive at what I like to call the safe speed limit, so basically you drive to the conditions of the road, so, for example, slowing down in the rain, slowing down when approaching a corner because you can’t see around the corner and there might be someone walking in the road, and then speeding up on the straight when you can see nice and far into the distance. I’d just like to talk about non-motorway special roads, one of the unusual characteristics of all non-motorway special roads is that they must have their speed limits defined within their statutory instruments and signposted explicitly as the national speed limit only applies to all-purpose roads and motorways.

This seems like a lot of words to state the obvious. Furthermore, I don't think this is the main reason why people sometimes drive faster than is safe. In my opinion that has more to do with people's underestimation of how dangerous their behaviour in traffic is.

So instead of keeping eyes on the road, we should look for small signs that government put to make everyone safer. Got it. I'll see if I have any spare time left between looking at 21" screen in my car, talking to someone and looking for small signs on the road. Let's just hope no pedestrians show up expecting me to notice them in time.

If you find it so hard maybe you shouldn't be driving on UK roads?
@cleowho
@cleowho Месяц назад
The signs aren't small, and are difficult to miss unless you're not paying attention whilst driving. Pedestrians, just like cyclists, mobility scooters and equestrians, have every right to expect you to notice them if you are driving with due care. Are you even familiar with British roads? How did you ever earn your Drivers Licence with that attitude?
