I thought that the story was that Xie told Fan to wait under the bride since it was raining and that he would get an umbrella, but by the time Xie returned, the water rose above the bridge and Fan drowned, then Xie hung himself at the same location (and left the umbrella there too).

A lot of people mistaken them as biological brothers, but they aren’t. On the official website, when you look up Wu Chang’s backstory it states that they are like brothers. I think it is cute the brother like bond that they have. Wu Chang is my favorite male hunter.
Me too but a lot of people made of them because they think they either sibling or adoptive or lover but they have different last name white guard last name is Xie and black guard last name is Fan and it May said about sworn brother that what everyone got mistaken for because they think sworn brother mean sibling but it actually mean having strongest bond than ever and for date part i forgot what they said about it.

For everyone searching the real meaning of their relationship, Wu Chang represent the Yin and the Yang. They are sworn brother, which mean having a strong bond with a person without it being automatically romantic, and see each other like brothers (they literally call themselves brothers in the game). Their date is not romantic, it was to talk about a problem that happened in a bar with fan, who beated up the son of the governor. Great story telling! But they are “like brothers” not actual brothers (which in most cases is Chinas way of slipping in gay characters under the code of ‘brotherly friendship’ to pass the censorship)

Yes, their called 黑白无常 in chinese, literally meaning black white wu chang. Their job is to carry souls to the afterlife. Apparently, wu chang is only a title and that their actual identities change after a few years via reincarnation which means that a lot of people have been wu chang before. Or maybe not. Of course, this is only if you believe in chinese mythology, which I don’t
