Fossil evidence shows that cutthroat trout are as old as the rocks that make up the mountains of Idaho. While other trout species can be found all over the planet, cutthroat trout can only be found in the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest. Because of that, these fish are central to Idaho's cultural identity. Through public support and science-led management, we can continue to protect Idaho’s native species.

IDFG is celebrating 125 years of wildlife management. Together, we can conserve Idaho's wildlife. #IDFG125

I'm glad F&G is focusing on Cutthroat. Perhaps hoot owl restrictions on popular stretches should be implemented. Or maybe don't stock moving water so heavily with rainbows that are competing with cutthroat.

I grew up catching cutthroat from a particular stretch of river with the very occasional brown. Ever since the marsh valley hydro plant and Downey canal was installed i haven’t seen or caught a cutthroat from the stretch in over 15 years now. It’s all brown and even they are starting to disappear do to lack of water because the hydro plant takes it all and diverts nearly 5 miles of river down a canal.

Beautiful video and fish, even the rainbow trout at 5:34 minutes in 😅. If anyone wants to help volunteer on restoration projects I highly recommend it! You’ll learn a lot and have greater satisfaction enjoying the natural places you helped improve.

I am from Utah where we have the Utah Cutthroat Slam. It came to Utah via the Wyoming Cutthroat Slam which was created by Ron Remmick and brought to Utah by someone who worked with Ron named Paul Thompson. It has brought awareness to the public of the importance of Cutthroat restoration and brought funding to help pay for the restoration of the native areas. Is Idaho going to create a Cutthroat slam?

I think you'd have to have four sub-species for a "slam"? Idaho officially has three; Yellowstone, Bonneville and West Slope. They'd have to break out the Snake River fine-spotted from Yellowstone to make a fourth I guess. (edit: looks like there are some Lahontans too, but not native).

As a big fan of Trout challenges and slams, Idaho could totally do a native trout slam with bulls, redbands and cutthroats and even whitefish included. I do appreciate that they support WNTI though and enjoyed catching bulls, redbands and Westslopes in 2022. They got my money for a 4 days because of their participation in WNTI challenge. Was a great trip camping out in beautiful country.

0:50 "Cutthroats are only found in the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest" ? Nope, we got so many Cutthroats in the Eastern Sierras (not part of the Pacific Northwest) that the limit on them and ONLY them is ten fish per day and every other trout here is five ! Facts, just the facts ma'am

Especially since it was the government that started building dams, introducing new species of fish etc. All you guys are doing is basically attempting to reverse the mistakes you have made.

Mr. Groves, there is truth in what you say, but if you were not in conservation groups or government in the 1960s to 1980s working to create wild stock management of fisheries, then what you say comes across as a bit arrogant. For example, biologists, lawyers, elected officials, and advocates in conservation group produced the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act passed by Congress and signed by President Carter on December 2, 1980. It was the conservation vote of the 20th Century and did more for wild stock management of salmon, trout, and other fish than any other law in our history.

@@flyfisher99502Idaho fish and game poisoned the head waters of the salmon river and introduced lake trout into some of the lakes in order to make the fisheries more appealing for anglers with no regard to native salmon or trout. So, yeah they are “fixing” the mistakes they made.
