It’s a good feeling to have what you want and need nothing more. True a smaller collection allows you to appreciate and spend more wrist time with your pieces.
James and I are so sorry for your loss. 💕 there never is the right thing anyone can say or do. Grief is just a journey that kinda never ends! Gosh, that sounds bleak. Well, it kinda evolves. We haven’t been the same since James’ dad passed. The world just never is the same again. But you learn a new normal! 💕 we are sending you all of our love and grieving alongside you. As for the watches, top tier state of the collection! I think the ID Collection needs a pretentious dress watch! 😜✨
ID Guy, I'm terribly sorry to hear of your loss, just know you and yours are in my prayers. Also just know that your father prepared you for these days, and as you go along, and carrying your load, he is watching you and smiling seeing what a good son your are. Chin up, eyes forward, press on, smile as you go.
Thank you Wes. It's been a mad twist to close off the year but it's taught me infinitely more. Dad knew he was sick for a long time (never told us as a family) but made a lot of preparations before going. The best man you'd ever hope to meet. Really can't thank you enough for this message Wes 🥃
Your father seems to have raised an exceptional son. I'm so sorry. Many blessings to you in this new year and thank you kindly for sharing your talents and passions with us. I value your perspective over most others when learning about watches.
So sorry for your loss. I lost my mother about two years ago and had to move back home to NZ from London to help my Dad out. It's a tough time when you lose a parent but I’m glad I have a hobby such as watch collecting to distract me. Thanks for all your content over the years. Your the JLC of all the watch RU-vidrs...the watch enthusiast's watch enthusiast.
Going through the exact same thing right now and just moved Mum to Scotland. This hobby continues to be been such a great distraction (from week one since his passing, never stopped recording a video) and escape from real life. Thank you brother, really means so much 🥃
Hey, just saw the video, really really sorry about your father buddy. May God give you and your family the strength to deal with this loss and may he find peace. Stay strong buddy 🫂
Sorry to hear about your dad. Great video and a really nice watch collection. It's nice to see a collection that is not all about money and value. And i think the word rolex was only mentioned once which is getting rare on youtube watch channels 👍
@ID-Guy So sorry to hear about your father’s passing. My condolences thoughts and prayers. As a father of a son. All a father wants is for his son to become the best man he can be. Not to worry, but to continue and build your life. Your fathers life is complete in you. He raised a boy that became a man. That man is you, and the world is a better place because of who you became. Take comfort knowing he will continue to live within you. His loved ones will see a reflection of your father when they see you. One day in the far distant future, you will see him once again. Sending hugs and strength from Chicago. Thank you for your videos and insight on our hobby. You hit it right on the nail with this video. It’s all about the watches you wear not the quantity you keep in a box. Collection themes vary from large to small, price, brands, rarity, or the quantity of watches. Only a TRUE purist enthusiast wears his watch(es).
Sorry for you loss, bro. You dad loved you from day one to day done, and you'll know that for the rest of your life and the hereafter. I've lost people before, but as our lives continue, we are free to remember them forever and let their best features improve us and the world around us until we ourselves go, and the people we influence will keep us all alive forever in a real and special way. Stay strong, bro, always be your best self, and great watch collection.
What an amazing video. Your honesty and emotions are infectious. So sorry for you loss - my wife and I screamed at the TV with raw emotion. Absolutely amazing video man! You have become one of my favorite to watch! Keep it up!!
The channel has been a great distraction (never missed a week uploading while all of this was going on) But hey, that's life. I'm far more thankful for what I do have now that's for sure 😉 Much love Geezer and thank you brother 🥃
I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad, I know how it feels , although I miss both of my parents I'm happy that I still have some great memories of the good times and those not so good. I agree that a watch enthusiast should not be measured by the number of watches that they own. An enthusiast may only have one watch or a smart watch but can still be enthusiastic about others that for some reason have not been purchased. I think you have a great collection IDGuy. All very readable and all have a story behind the purchase. As a kid I always wanted a Smiths but sadly never got one, by the time I was working the company had gone, with no internet or anything and my priorities in life changing time just ran away. Who knows I might find a good example in the future or even take a look at the Everest made sold by TIMEFACTORS, who knows. It's good that watches are still being produced by UK companies although in far smaller numbers compared to many brands, Bremmont deserves a mention here. I love the BigEye to the point that I also have the steel version with the black dial, a watch that I initially wasn't keen on is possibly my most worn chronograph for its incredible readability. The history of one going back to Longines who could not find records of it but then put it (back) into production is a great story. The FXD is another great watch that I have tried at the AD but I still prefer my LHD Pelagos and could not justify another purchase at that time. I also love the Seamaster, I don't have this model but I still prefer it to the current version by quite a margin. Anyway I wish you a happy new year and hope that it's a better one than the last.
So very sorry to hear about your father. Good vibes and thoughts your way.... Great thoughts on purchasing/collecting and I always enjoy your down to earth approach to this hobby. Cheers to a wonderful 2023!
Happy 2023 ID Guy. I reduced my collection from 10 watches to 2 in the second half of last year and I have never been happier with my current SOTC. Thank you for your sage advice and tremendous content. All the best to you in the New Year!
"We are only custodians to what we have" well put. Even our own body. So enjoy what we have no matter what it is for all is a gift...my best to you and your family.🙏
Thanks for sharing the painful news about your Dad passing away. Know that you have an entire community of people thinking and praying for you and your family. And thank you for producing some of the very best you tube content for watch enthusiasts. You’re videos are awesome and they bring joy and happiness to so many of us each time we watch. What a gift! Thanks and Happy New Year.
I truly am sorry to hear about Dad; i lost my Dad, just about 6 years now. Even after all this time, to me- still feels like yesterday. I miss him so much. Watches have helped me quite a bit. I picked up my first 'nice' watch 2018....and now the 'collection' stands at 5 :) Wear yours in the best of health, and wishing you a very happy, & prosperous New Year 2023. Also- one of the commentators below is 100% right- you're the JLC of watch hobbyists! (a watch hobbyist's watch hobbyist! lol)
All the best for 2023 IDGuy. Looking forward to seeing what the New Year brings for your collection. Thanks for all the great content in 2022 and over the years.
Bereavement is possibly the hardest thing any of us will experience: I'm so sorry for your loss. I really like your collection and the thinking process behind it. You've done well. Thank you for sharing this, your work on RU-vid is unique and greatly appreciated.
Great Video yet again . I also lost my Dad not that long ago and I went through a similar change and realisation of what is important. People is all there is in life but we can love watches and be guardians for the next generation. Ironically time is what you need. All the best
Sorry for your loss, sending a big hug mate, it’s hard to say goodbye. Thanks for sharing your collection, awesome pieces and definitely a preferred style there. Suits you 👍🏻
ID Guy. Heartfelt condolences. I remembering you saying that part of your decision for Seamaster 1957 was as it was the year your father was born. I am sure it makes that watch even more special for you. Although very different, my father bequeathed me his 1967 custom-made speakers with 16" Wharfedales. I think of him every time I listen to them. Take care my friend.
Dear ID Guy, so sorry for your loss. The passing of a father is such a difficult moment in life, especially when its abrupt. Sincere condolences. After 25 years of interest in watches, I think the ideal is a one watch collection Jack Nicklaus style. That one watch that has been everywhere with you and has been charged with so many memories and moments it becomes an extension of you. I’m not there at all with 5 watches in the collection but definitely agree with the less is more concept and the idea of saving up and really waiting for an exceptional watch… I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your thoughtful videos and incredible content. I come to your channel to find direction, opinion and expertise and have learned so much in the process.
Condolences on your loss. I lost my mom a couple years back and my perspective has evolved on what is truly important. Yours is a very thoughtful collection and I dig that. Cheers to 2023 🥃
I am deeply sorry for your loss, I hope sharing your love of horology is helping you during these difficult times. I totally agree with your philosophy on watch collecting. I have bought and sold dozens of timepieces over a 15 year period only to realize I really need 3; Tudor BB ETA, Nivada chronomaster and the Longines Sector dial. From now on it's 1 in / 1 out.
Thank you for this. Sad start of the clip but glad to hear that you could pick up wisdom from your loss. ONE of many questions: how have you built the strap/clasp solution? I dream of that set up for my FXD and now I see that you’ve already made that. Please post some tips! Great video as always
BEst SOC video I've seen - thankx for sharing a fresh perspective on this hobby and actually taking the time to explain more the WHY rather then just listing the watches.
I'm so sorry to hear for your loss, I always come back to see your channel & appreciate your perspective about theses timepieces, the strange feeling that we are passionate about object that remind us time flies. 2019 was an hard year for me, followed by the events we all experienced, I decided to wait less & pull the trigger for my first luxury watch, always liked Omega, getting in the hobby by the moon landing, than buy my first automatic from Mr Platts, the PRS-14, I have to admit, you helped me a lot to decided witch one. Happy new year & best wishes !
Like everyone here on this platform, I’d just like to echo the sentiments and pass my condolences on for your terrible loss. Thank you for what you do and the fact you didn’t want to monetise that situation, shows your class
Sorry to hear about your Father, mine passed Nov 22 after a short battle with cancer. He had a small watch collection consisting of 4 Rolex’s that he wore right up to the end. What makes them special to me is the fact that my brother and I gave them to him when he hit certain milestones in life.
So sorry for your loss. It sure puts things into perspective. I'm a material person, I hope in the good sense of the term. I purchase vintage objects that tell a story and are time capsules of an era when life seemed easier and creativity was encouraged. These watches, cars, bikes, and more mundane objects had very creative designs and were made to last a lifetime. They bring me happiness, and although I'm only their temporary caretaker, I get huge satisfaction in looking after them and doing my best to keep them going a little longer. Thank you for the video and best wishes for 2023.
Sincerest condolences on your loss - Keeping you and the family in my prayers. My small 4 watch collection is also very personal to me with a lot of back story behind each piece which makes the relationship with each watch so much more meaningful - The 3861 Hesalite Speedy, The Seamaster professional 300, Hamilton PVD titanium and the Baltic blue gilt Aquascaphe
ID Guy, though this may only bring little comfort, chances are 2023 will at least at one level, certainly be a better year than 2022. My heartfelt condolences for your loss. As far as collections go: I figure much more than 3-5 watches seems a bit silly. You can never give more watches adequate wrist time, and then there is the upkeep. I really hope the MOD Omega Seamaster you are such a champion of comes back in 2023, just to see your reaction. All the best and keep the videos coming! Pedro
Terribly sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my father in much the same way in 2005. It's something that continues to shape my perspective. This is easily your best video and I love the candor and honesty you bring to this hobby. Chin up and all the best for 2023!
I am sorry for your loss. My dad died suddenly, when I was 23. Heartbreaking events like these change our perspectives and values for the rest of our lives! With time, life becomes worth living again. All the best wishes to you.
Condolences for the loss of your dad, IDGuy. Great advice about watch buying and learning to appreciate a more limited collection! Keep up the great work. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Sorry for your loss buddy 😢 Great video as always and its crazy how many times I have watched your videos just nodding the whole time. Its like listening to my own arguments over this hobby in my head. Stay strong and healthy 🤜🤛
Dear Mr IDGuy, Never easy, sorry to hear mate. As we get older we learn to understand what is important to us. This changes and is varied for many. Appreciate your sentiments and it’s nice to have a connection with a handful of pieces to someday pass on. ❤
My mantra for the new year, “learn to appreciate less.” Prior to seeing this video I made the decision to finally get a Tudor destro that I fell in love with when it first came out. In the interim, I purchased other watches that intrigued me but never filled that void. You hit it right on the head with, “don’t buy something supplementary instead of getting the one you truly feel a connection with.” To answer your question in the end, this video made every bit of sense. Thank you.
Great to see you SOTC video, I’m saddened to hear your terrible news, and my sincere condolences I’ve roughly the same kinda collection, and I can honestly admit, I’d never consider removing my omega Seamaster 300 1957 trilogy from my collection. It looks absolutely super on that strap. Looking forward to watching your new video in 2023. Sending you warmest regards for this new year. Wills 👍🏼
So sorry to hear of your personal family loss. I wish you and your family strength and peace in going through such times. Great consolidated well-considered watch collection. I've also been trying to keep the core keepers that I want to wear the most... Still, hard to break it down to less than 13 or 12. I've been gradually wearing my watches and trying to gauge a true feel of how special they are to me or not. Keeping the real special pieces to me and making the tough decisions to slowly part with those that are not so much. Hope better times and greater heights are reached in 2023 for you.
I can really relate to your thoughts on a smaller collection of pieces that you truly appreciate and also as I see you have done I've been eyeing up that new stainless OEM Omega mesh for my Planet Ocean 2201.50, I just think it would be very fitting and a nice change, it looks so cool on your Seamaster 57, great collection and content IDGuy.
Sorry for your loss and it’s refreshing to hear your growth as a result, opposed to all the negatives that may have been associated. I personally have had one watch for the last 2 years (Explorer 124270) and have no intention of anything else anytime soon. The north of my son helped me gain perspective and I wanted to have 1 watch that spoke to me and what he’d always associate me with when it hopefully gets handed down to him.
That Omega is breathtaking! Money ruins everything, Indeed!!! You are tha Man!!! Great video, even my wife loved it!! Your humility and the way you carry yourself will take you very far, you will see!! God bless, and greetings from Puerto Rico!!!
Excellent observations. I’ve come to the same conclusion. I’m currently selling most of my collection (10 +/-) in order to focus more on pieces that mean more to me and that I’m interested in passing down to my family. I believe this makes the act of collection far more meaningful and rich. Cheers to you in this New Year and deepest sympathies to you and yours at the loss of your father. Certainly puts life in quick perspective.
Mate, hang in there as you work through the loss of your father. Take heart in the fact that he led you down a path of success and now you need to set the azimuth and continue. As to the SOTC video, an excellent mix and a great explanation for that mix. Best wishes in 2023! JR old warrior and even older writer
Sorry for your loss. A few people i have watched in the past have tried to monetise their ' grief '. It seems to be ever present on you tube. This is swiftly followed by me no longer watching their output. Appreciate your honesty and integrity. Good values that seem in short supply nowadays.
I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my newborn son in 2022. It was a rough year for many of us. The best thing we can do for them is to live our best lives. Take care
My deepest condolences on the passing of your father. You are perhaps my favorite Watch RU-vidr because of the passion for history. I love the less is more approach, after collecting many affordable pieces I am setting my sights on the CW Aquitaine GMT, a grail for me!
I’m sorry for the loss of your Dad. I lost mine 3 years ago and it hit me hard… but time is a great healer. Keep up the amazing content it is top quality. Happy New Year buddy. Best wishes, Steve 👍🇬🇧
I am sorry to hear your news of the loss of your father. What a beautifully emotional video, it’s clear how connected you two were, he has prepared you well.. your thoughts on collections also make me question my own 6 watches. I live in Germany now and there is a saying here, to give with warm hands rather than cold hands… Thanks so much for your open approach here, you’re a good person.
The Seamaster 300 can be all you need. A beauty. Congratulation. The Pelagos wears really well. Tried both on at the AD. My first choice would be The Seamaster. Maybe 1 Day .
Sorry about your Dad. I lost my Mom in February last year. It certainly does make you reassess goals and "things.' Good to hear that you have weathered that storm. Good vid. Keep at it!
Hi, my deep condolences. Lost my dad 6 years ago, he was awesome , loved him greatly and still do, it sucks no matter how you approach it. I can say that it took me 4 years to lower the grief significantly. I find consolations knowing that he was a good dad, led a pretty good life, died at home in his bed from natural cause, dementia made an old man out of him though he was only 78. You are younger than me so I guess your dad was a young guy. As I said, it sucks. He taught my friends to drink scotch. At 60 all my family chipped in and we got him an explorer 2, immediately he looked like James Bond! My brother wears it. A drink to our dads!
Brilliant video. Sorry about your loss. I also lost my father in August, and your commentary is spot on! I very much enjoy your channel, but I truly feel inspired by today's video. Here's to a great 2023... may this be the beginning of great things to come. Cheers
Another great video, honest and from the heart as always. I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your Dad. Your sentiments re focusing on the watches you truly love are spot on. Happy New Year and thanks for your great content. J
Thank you Stewart! I've been fortunate in a way because dad was never classed as "healthy" throughout his life. So from an early age I remember visiting him in hospital. It all just snowballed and his organs gave up one Saturday. Life 😉 Have superb new year brother and thank you again!
Happy New Year Boet 🥂 I know the past year has been a trying time for your family and you but, you are moving forward into a New Year now. Hopefully new beginnings will be very beneficial for your family. I do hope so. The collection is sublime with a real military theme running throughout. I knew that you were hankering after the mesh strap for your Omega Seamaster ‘57. It looks fantastic. So much better than on the new Bond SMP300. Enjoy this wonderful collection my friend. You are not a one watch person. Like you said about the FXD and the Omega “The enjoyment is the same”. I’m sure that your Father would want you to embrace your passions for Design and Watches and go with the collecting. Lots of love to all of the supporters of the channel. Have a wonderful 2023! ✊
For myself I think it took buying and ultimately selling many watches I thought that I really loved to really appreciate what I really wanted out of a watch. Some pieces I was obsessed with for a long time but overlooked something that bugged me. (sapphire glass) It took a while to be honest with myself but as soon as I was, those pieces had to go. Really great collection Guy, thanks for sharing
Your love for watches comes through on your video. You were also very philosophical. Well done! I look forward to more content from you this year. Happy New Year to you and all enthusiasts out there.
Have just stumbled across this video and it’s the second or third of yours that I’ve seen. Firstly - sorry for your loss, I can hear the pain in your voice. I don’t think any of us are ever ready for a loved ones passing. Secondly the way you speak about this hobby is captivating, you really drill down on what makes you tick (sorry) and your passion is palpable. Love that you enjoy the everest so much, I’ve always wanted the explorer and contrary to your sign off I think I’d like a closer look at the smiths now. I don’t think I’m ever really going to be comfortable with the Rolex price tags so this could be a winner.
