my family is acholi and many of my family members were persecuted by idi amin during his reign, thank you for giving me some more insight into what they survived

This story loomed over my childhood into teen years in the seventies and I didn’t understand anything bc I’m from a disaster of a family, so I love listening to this and learning and understanding what it was all about back then. Now, I’ll study all of African leaders and history as much as possible.

I was a high school student n followed keenly the overthrow of Milton Obote by Idi Amin. During that era of the 70s through the late 80s Uganda under his eccentric rule used to be in the lime light. Hence my assessment of this documentary is that it is objectively authentic.

My wife is Ethiopian. She used to work at the Uganda Embassy in Addis Ababa. Idi Amin came there to visit and shook everybody's hands. He had huge hands, she said, but he was very polite and nice.

I really liked ( although terrifying) the film , “ The Last King Of Scotland “. It’s not for the faint of heart. He was a completely sick and cruel man!! Another example of man’s misuse and self serving use of power!! The actor who portrayed him is Forest Whitaker. Excellent performance by him.😢💔🖤

Excellent documentary. My dad has a picture of him shaking hands with Amin (when a dictator as violent as him asks you to shake his hand, you shake his hand) sometime in the 70s. I was there in the late 90s and I visited/lived in many of the places mentioned here. Surreal hearing someone talking about it.

I was in 4th grade (1976) when I first read about Idi Amin in MAD magazine. Being a born skeptic, I wanted to know if he was a real person past the parody. Yes he was and I'm glad the internet wasn't around back then. I'd be scarred for life!

This was great history. Please kindly make a documentary of the failed decolonization process of the Cameroons that led to war between the two Cameroons now for 6 years and counting. This subject is of interest to millions of people. Thanks

Kenyans were also not fans of Idi Amin because he also assassinated the Kenyan Minister of Agriculture at that time; Bruce Mackenzie. Kenya was also forced to host many of Uganda's Asians after they were expelled and his hostility to Kenyans in Uganda caused a lot of grief for people from Western Kenya, many of whom had family members in Uganda at the time.

I can not understand why on Earth people go off on a tangent about Hollywood movies depicting Amin, whether they be acceptable or farcical. Why not comment on the excellent, and true, commentary shown on this doco? Thank you for bringing it to us.

At a trade dinner in Europe Idi Amin ate 3 Frankfurters, 2 Hamburgers, 1 Londoner and a Parisien.

I actually met one of his daughters. She was so dark and beautiful. She lived in Boston in the early 90's.

Fun Fact! My entire family is banned from Uganda by idi amin when my great uncle beat him in a boxing match, my uncle had to flee to Australia to say safe for him! I'll give ,ore details in comments maybe

An excellent documentary, chronicling a most brutal dictator. I was fortunate, in 1971/72 to befriend Ugandan-Asians who fled for their lives to the United Kingdom.

I watched the movie Last King of Scotland. Forest Whittaker managed to imitate par excellence! We have read some of the speeches he made addressing the Queen in a language similar to English, raw humour indeed! 😀😃

If the story of a massive gold deposit being found in Uganda is true, then we'll see the world powers get very interested in the area once again. I'm guessing a civil war keeping everybody too busy to mine it in order to keep gold prices up as to not destroy the world economy any further..... If that gold makes it to market, gold prices will fall quickly.

Tragic he was corrupt he could have chosen to do great things for his people who put their faith and trust in him.History shows us that men like him seem to think they will live forever have no regard for the needs of others.I understand that power can corrupt but what he did was monstrous.He has certainly earned his place in history as a tyrannical despot.

I would love to see a documentary about how Tanzania has helped sub Sahara countries out of colonialism. The country literally put aside its own development to help others attain freedom.

I retired from a large West coast city not long ago, but one of the best things about the job was (some of) my coworkers, some of whom were from other nations all over the world. One guy named Mike, or as we came to call him Uganda Mike, was one of the more interesting people I worked with. He had spent a few years growing up there as his father was a civil servant in the Ugandan government during Idi Amin's despotic rule. Mike talked with the most quaint British accent and he told me several stories when I asked what it was like living there. Basically all I remember was that everyone he knew took great care to stay far, far away from any sort of political activity or even talk about it and to even mention the name of Idi Amin, was thought to bring much bad ju-ju and just an undesirable thing in general. If Amin liked you, he'd reward you lavishly. But Amin could turn against you at a moment's notice, and Uganda Mike said several of his friend's fathers simply disappeared with no explanation, never to be seen again!

Amin was a corporal in the British army King's Royal African Rifles. I used to drink with the man who had been his Company commander. The Commander told me that Amin constantly begged to be promoted to sergeant but my drinking mate refused to promote him.

Superb rendition. As to what we think of amin well he was a cannibal supported by the English. Frankly if you ask me this beautiful planet is ravaged to the extent it is because of the greed of the British. Actually between amin and the British who was more brutal it is a difficult question to answer.

A few things that come to mind re this video: The idea that african colonies of european powers are artificial constructs with no tribal/ethnic considerations: well so were the european powers: only the fact that Great Britain is an island makes any political sense for a country to exist. Like France, Belgium, Germany and Italy, it started as a random group of different "tribes" who united in the 19yh century or earlier as one nation. Before europeans entered africa, the various tribes/ethnic groups present were engaged in attempted domination of each other, so nothing new there after colonisation; after all, slaves were available for sale from the 1st time european ships made landfall in certain african coasts, implying that enslavery of weaker tribes by stronger ones was an established way of life already in africa. Idi amin was never prosecuted for mass murder; well neither were Josef Stalin or Chairman Mao, to name but two. Idi Amin's government was initially supported by Britain and Israel, well US Government supported Saddam Hussein vs Iran and Afghani warlords vs USSR. It happens. Many times it goes pear-shaped, but, hindsight is always 20-20

The fact that the outside world showed no care for the wars and atrocities of this guy, it reminds me of that quote from Lord of War; "at the time, the West couldn't care less".

I think that this despot should know by now how hell is like......

The Israeli planes were refuled **after** the operation. The Kenyan government agreed to refule the airplanes after a request sent to Kenya during the operation. The Kenyen did not facilitate the operation but they supported it during the operation

And the Belgians still have rather a lot of explaining to do.

It was a dark time for our nation indeed.However, I would have appreciated to see some of the positive achievements of his that shows evidently that he was a man that loved his country in a way that was overshadowed by the bloodshed. You have always done the same with other people in history who's gruesome acts were given a more colorful justification.

This guy he wasn’t seen literally but do you know there’s actually a big study between psychopaths cruel dictators and warlords like Hitler Stalin Idi Amin and many others with this one thing it’s their fathers having no father having abusive fathers or having a weak father figures you’d be surprised how much people especially men are affected themselves growing up becoming men how their mind and personality and what they do this is actually been common knowledge I think since like the late 1800s the lack of a father figure having abusive one or having weak ones can really shape a man’s personality and future it’s actually quite scary and very important as civilization that should really home in on the nuclear family in the importance of father in that family not trying to get rid of it

I Hope we’ll get to see more biographies on African leaders. They are not given the attention Africa deserves.

Africas biggest export, however if you are uganda you know not whatever they say about amin is true. infact he ugandas best president, i live in uganda and its economy has dropped, since amini left. public health was free at hes time, ALL ROADS, HOSPITALS in ug now were bulit by amin. 40yrs later the current govt only maintains what amin bulit in6years. I appreciate you not overlooking Obote’s crimes. I think it’s easy to look at someone as infamous as Amin and then see a less crazy leader like Obote and just see him as good in comparison.

My mom was kicked out of Uganda by him in 79

4:20 I think the literacy levels were extremely low in the first half of the century cause the British made sure people never went to school or shared educational facilities with them. As a result, when Uganda got her independence most of the people where extremely poor and uneducated. I think it says a lot about why they have never elected a leader into power through a transparent and fair democratic process to this day.
