I'm from Chile, so I'm really looking forward to watching this.

Fairly accurate except for the statement that there are statues of Pinochet in Chile and the cult to his personality. There is not a single statue of him in Chile. Saldo it was not mentioned that he survived an assessination attempt when he was traveling with his grandson.

I had no idea Pinochet was French and Basque or that many Basque people emigrated to Chile. That's the same ethnicity as my dad's side of the family but they moved to the US. I admit to knowing little about Chile. Great video.

The central square and cathedral shwon at 29:18 are located in Tunja, Colombia. Not in Chile... It is like the second or third oldest cathedral built in South America, and the satue is not a Pinochet one, but a Bolivar one... you know, the liberator of most of South America...

Once the army gets a foothold they will never leave. Look at Egypt for a recent example. Egyptians were feeling so victorious after getting rid of Morsi and the Brotherhood but look what happened.

I see a lot of comments here that say this episode is "free of bias"...but I disagree - when they mention the Chicago Boy free-market policies - they say that they had short term positive effects - which is a complete fallacy unless of course they can show socialist policies can have a long-term benefit...just one example would do.

But we DO know what happened with many "Desaparecidos". Many were flew by chopper, and pushed, some times alive, in the middle of the ocean. Pinochet's personal pilot Oregier Benavento confessed to be part of this cruel practice.

Chile is the most advanced country in South America. The country with the most stable economy, democracy and the least income distribution discrepancies in the region. It is a country I always wanted to visit.

In June of 1973 we moved back to Chile having left there in 1966. I remember very clearly 9/11/73. It was an exciting time for me, being 12 at this time. I did not realize that truth of what was happening to my country and it's people. It has been many decades since then and I experienced another 9/11 and I also remember that day very clearly

Brutality? But compared to what? When compared to Communist Cuban dictatorship, under Pinochet Chile prospered. There is no version of 10's of thousands of refugees who fled to the US to seek asylum as was the case of Cuba. The Communists in Latin America were ruthless, so, he knew that his enemies would do what they did in Cuba. He might have thought, we have to meet the Communist savagery with an equal force- fighting fire with fire.

You forgot to mention how Allende invited Fidel Castro to Chile and how Allende was giving away lands to him.

After watching this I'm also catching up on other past videos all I think are very well done.

I love these documentaries tbh I would love to see documentaries on "Papa Doc" François Duvalier and Rafael Trujillo. Two very interesting Latin American dictators. I actually had family living in the Dominican Republic when Trujillo was in power. My great grandmother escaped Europe in the 1940s because she was Jewish and the Nazis were after her. She ended up the Dominican Republic because they were the only country accepting refugees with our papers. I still have family there today.

What is amazing about him especially is he didn't rule until death over being overturned by coup etc, he basically retries to a lower roll but as head of the military. Amazing eh?

My interest in this story and about the whole story of the 73 coup in general mostly stems from the very interesting 1982 movie "Missing" staring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek about the disapearance and murder by the junta of Charles Horman in Santiago just after the coup.

I was a teenager when Allende was elected president, I had no prejudice against him, and I hoped that he made a good government. But since the very beginning of Allende’s government, it was chaos in the economics, in politics, in everything, violence, hatred, etc.: it was the worst government we ever had. Allende and his coalition intended to impose a communist regime; most of Chileans were very happy that Pinochet overthrew Allende. The violence of Pinochet’s regime was a response to the violence of Allende’s supporters. I don't endorse the brutality, but I understand it.

Don't say that he "plageriazed most of his work" when he was not convicted of plageriasm which only a Court can do after due legal process has been followed. Rather say that he was accused of plageriasm or his work appeared to be plageriazed but he is innocent until proven guilty only by a Court of Law not by the court of simple minded people.

Can you accept a suggestion? , although it is about Pinochet, adding who was his opposition and who finaced the opposition may have given some perspective that he was very likely fighting Cuba and the USSR. It doesn't make him any less brutal or deserving of a conviction for human rights violations though. Now please do one Fidel Castro... and his brother... can you do this while the criminals are still alive?

A great president who set the road to development of our economy. From being the poorest country in Latam, we became the most developed one. He understood the needs of Chile and after he stepped down from power, the country had its glorious 30 best years, until Bachelet came to power and started the declining of the economy with social unrest, that follow during Piñera's second term to finish up with the marxist Boric, who will give the final blow to one of the most successful country ever in Laram. Pinochet gave the base for the strongest right and center right ideas in the area. He left with a 45% support and that has hold until now with a 47 %. He is still loved and remember, especially today, when we watch how communists are destroying our nation.

_Probably the best South American leader, Im not even Chilean, but, Im a person who has studied the politics of my continent. In Colombia we had this General called “Pinilla” a man pretty similar to Pinochet, he built airports in the entire country (even the San Andres Islands), he gave female rights, finished with the first violence era and brought the TV to country, he did all this in only 5 years. In contrast with Pinochet, Pinilla decided to re-open the country to “Democracy” after 5 years of success. His biggest mistake was precisely, not ruling Colombia for 20 or 30 years like Pino did in Chile_

My mother’s family is from Chile, and I lived there as a child when 9-11-73 happened. My grandmother said that Pinochet saved Chile from becoming a communist country, something that never gets talked about when people disparage the Pinochet regime…

How nostalgic, remembering my childhood, we played in the street without fear, we went to school walking the blocks and there was no danger, with calm, order and hope that in my country, little by little, it was becoming an example for L.A. and the world. In truth the G.C. A. Pinochet Ugarte and the Armed Forces. They were heroes and we didn't understand it and we never found out that despite some needs, inequalities and injustices, we were happy and we didn't know it. How I would like our children and grandchildren to live that Chile again.

Every time the narrator cites the economic problems of the Allende administration by stating due to economic sanctions by the United States I’d like just once for an explanation of the actual reasons. When it’s stated it’s almost as if it’s just prima fascia acceptable international relations rather than a concerted attack on an entire people at the behest of multinational corporations.

Congratulations for an almost objective information. Just one observation: there is'nt a single statue along the almost 5000 km of Chile. I'm 74, so I lived Allende and Pinochet´s gobernment, and the rest to come. We now are under a left gobernment, unexperienced and uncontroled violence. Our growth this year will be 1,5% and on 2023 predictions are of -1%, we are diving.

You can say that he was not totally out of powrr. He went to his old job as chief of the army, had power in his hands longer then to 1990. And, Who knows, do anothe4 coup if he felt burning under his feets...

In Latin America privatisation usually causes an increase in poverty but, the opposite, strict state control or nationalisation, has also caused poverty... case is that nobody knows exactly in what situation -privatisation or nationalisation- most people in a Latin American country is less poor and in what it is poorer.

I think he is both of those. I believe if his predecessor had remained in power Chile would have become Cuba. At very least the fluctuation in the economy allowed the disaster that was Cuba did not happen. I expect the people are grateful.
