Right? That means nothing besides he's a nobody with a diva complex

Yeah. He fails to grasp that although Elphie IS the Wicked Witch of the West in Gregory MacGuire's pro-LGBTQ+ strongly political revisionist history of L. Frank Baum's fantasy world reimagined by the timeless 1939 MGM film, Idina Menzel both simultaneously is & yet isn't her character roles. The same applies to Kristin Chenoweth concerning strawberry blond G[a]linda the Good as well, particularly when Kristin directly points out how she saw, even as a child, how plastic & superficial Glinda (portrayed by dame actress Billie Burke) kind of appears within the context of the MGM film. Indeed, a combination of aspects taken from both the public domain source material by original franchise author L. Frank Baum (his original book _The Wonderful Wizard of OZ_ truncated into the far simpler title of _The Wizard of OZ_ & having much of its plot greatly condensed in most retellings, which only benefits the story more by focusing more strongly on the character interactions) & the MGM film (though timeless, this 1939 musical romp is relatively short in comparison to modern-day blockbusters, clocking in at just over a hour & a half) certainly provided the founding framework for things to come when Gregory McGuire first wrote _Wicked: The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West_ in 1995 well before it became the 2003-ongoing runaway hit Broadway musical it has since become, right down to having its own movie adaptation presumably in development from Universal Studios, much like _The Wizard of OZ_ story in itself, from which _Wicked_ very much is a deliberate upside-down subversion of, since _Wicked_ tells the narrative of L. Frank Baum's fairytale from the perspective of its villain reworked into a "beautifully tragic" misunderstood protagonist named Elphaba (or shortened to Elphie) whilst retaining much of its predominate influences patterned after the MGM film. Indeed, the movie in itself had spun-off into various interpretations in its own right (which were unrelated to _Wicked_ aside from similar visual aesthetics), from the 1970's radio recording of _The Wizard of OZ_ starring Judy Garland reprising her role as Dorothy Gale, the 1990 cartoon animated by DiC Entertainment that originally aired on ABC, Disney Record's "Story & Song" adaptation of the story put onto an LP vinyl record album/the Read-Along storybook with audio cassette re-release/an unofficially unauthorized audio CD created from downloading the mp3 file of the audio ripped straight from an uploaded RU-vid video of either preceding retelling which actually featured Disney Records cast member soundalikes of the MGM cast due to the working relationship between Disney & MGM at that time (It was this partnership that led to the creation of the Disney-MGM [nowadays Disney's Hollywood] Studios theme park as part of Walt Disney World in Florida; Although this 3rd theme park was clearly made to try & counteract the existence of neighboring Orlando competition Universal Studios [which is owned by NBC-Universal, whose executives actually own the film rights to a potential _Wicked_ movie, come to think of it], as conclusively proven when former Paramount employee & then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner basically rehashed the Studio Tram Tour attraction & pilfered the whole "working film studio" concept directly from Universal Studios to serve as the initial premise behind the development of Disney-MGM Studios too, it wasn't long before the arduous "studio system" of movie production fairly quickly became rather sadly antiquated due to home video releases of most-recognized films choosing to include the quintessential "behind-the-scenes" development of the accompanying film onto the corresponding VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray for said film as a "Bonus Feature" years prior to the advent of the post-analog Digital Age] that had been symbolized for years by either the Earful Tower [the white water tower with oversized built-in Mickey ears sporting the Disney-MGM Studios name branding across its side where the name of a local town/city would usually be, with the Earful Tower mostly finding its most renowned use in promotional advertising on TV during the commercially-free premium years of The Disney Channel ahead of the exponential boom of nationwide cable television] or, much more specifically, the standout icon of the theme park that is the Gramine Chinese Theater mock facade, in which sat The Great Movie Ride [as per its name, the ride-thru calls back to the Golden Age of Hollywood, which explains why it appropriately ends with two choice scenes from _The Wizard of OZ_ MGM film lovingly recreated in audio-animatronic form; ~a droning voice similar to various theme park instructional spiels echoes out of an unseen hidden speaker~ This just in, folks, The Great Movie Ride is now entering the conjoined realm of Defunctland/Yesterworld, since it has now gotten replaced by Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway once the Disney deal with MGM obviously expired, given the fact that Disney's longtime rival Warner Brothers bought out the MGM catalog of classic films & cartoons as part of it eventually becoming the corporate conglomerate Time-Warner Inc. & eventually splintering off into the Warner Media division of major telephone company AT&T once Apple's signature phone service bought out the entirety of Time-Warner Inc. itself for 8 million dollars a few years ago]).
