"Welcome to Costco. I love you" will be next :D All of this is coming true though. Also, if you haven't seen WALL-E yet, you must! Pretty much takes place in the same universe
No, it was a horrific documentary on day 1. When people share your political alignment, you're more inclined to believe those people are smart because you're emotionally motivated to conflate the positive feeling of belonging with the comforting feeling of being right. But if you pay attention to how your friends justify their positions, you'll realize how often your friends are going with the flow rather than actually thinking. I mean, we elected George W. Bush because people wanted to have A BEER with him. That was literally a talking point among voters. The only reason people are wising up to how fucked we are... is because the political discourse is so toxic that both sides are becoming aware of how absurd this all is. But with a 2-party system where both sides cling to power by sabotaging viable alternatives (hence Biden winning the primary despite the vast majority of liberals hating his guts, and conservative politicians all backing Trump over DeSantis despite many conservative voters jumping ship), we're forever going to have a hard time de-radicalizing public discourse.
The sad thing is that President Camacho is legit a better leader than some I could name. Dude brought in the smartest person around to address their problems. Yeah, things went south for a bit, but when presented with evidence that Not Sure was right, Camacho admitted it and put him in a position of power because he was the right person for the job.
Yeah, while its an idiocracy... the majority of the people and smartest of the stupid are actually pretty benign and not that bad... just low IQ. We'd be lucky if that was our future really.
@thecaptainfubar - If you're referring to President Camacho being a “legit better” leader than Trump...I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Dumba**, Grandpa, Boomer Biden is WORSE than Trump. And, NO...I DON’T like Trump. I DESPISE BOTH MEN. I also HATE The Democrat and Republican Parties. And, I NEVER VOTED for either man.
That's what leaders actually are, they aren't about know how to solve everything himself. But he recognizes talented people who he puts in position to fix things.
One of the many things I love about this movie is how random the fanbase is. I have a Brawndo t-shirt and a couple years ago I went into a Costco wearing the shirt and the Greater (had to be in his mid-60's) greeted me with a "Welcome to Costco, I love you."
When Fox saw what this movie ended up being, they pulled the funding and refused to market it. The VFX were never finished. The companies that had agreed to lend their names to it also were horrified with how they were used.
@@l34CoNCreepy I mean, on the one hand, they clearly were disparaging Carl’s Jr. On the other hand… god help me… if they were to ACTUALLY start offering “BIG ASS FRIES!!!” I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from trying them, at least once.
@@TheRealMirCat The real wildest part is it's ALL for show, keep the people looking over here while they're busy over there.....slight of hand, to the extreme!
In the movie they think water is a pollutant, much like idiots today have been conned into thinking C02 (plant food) is a pollutant, what a sick world we live in
what's truly scary is the number of people in these comments uncritically accepting eugenicist fallacies like "dumb people out-reproducing smart people leads to a dumb population". we've been there before in the darkest moments of history.
I, too, had heard about Idiocracy ..... and that it was some subversive genius thing . So, I rented it, and watched for 15 minutes thinking it the stupidest juvenile comedy ever and that I wasted 2 bucks ! Then, I realised it was intended as a satire, and enj0yed the rest . THEN .....try p ca,e along . AHHHHHH !,! ,!
When I first watched this, I considered it the most terrifying movie I had ever seen. I felt that many of the things being shown would come true, possibly even in my lifetime. Turns out, I underestimated my fellow man and it took less than a generation. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie and it's hilarious, but it's still the scariest film I've ever seen.
Fun fact: Most of the voices of the machines that talk to people, like the Carl's Jr. ordering device at 7:20 is none other than the voice actor for SpongeBob (Tom Kenny)
I knew a girl who refused to drink water. She was perfectly fine the entire time I knew her and then suddenly in her 30s she collapsed and ended up in the hospital. She caused kidney damage, and her doctor warned her either she starts drinking water or she would die or need a transplant. Last time I talked to her, she only drank water with flavor powder packets put in it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My ex hated water. She was complaining about her weight and I suggested drinking a glass of water before every meal and she went apocalyptic on my ass. I mean, yes it was mean but I was trying to be helpful because I read by doing that helps to eat less by making you a little full and water is usually a good thing in general. I later found out her hate was because she drank tons of water in the army because they were strict on the liquids you consume. Holy hell the fight was epic though.
Fun fact: the shoes in the film are crocs. The costume designer found the shoes through a startup, thoight they looked way to ridiculous to not use and then the company blew up.
@@thedukeofnuts I've got bad news for you my dude. Look up the stats on plastic recycling. 90% of the plastic that gets put in recycling bins ends up in landfills just as though you had thrown it in the normal trash. Most varieties of plastic can't be economically recycled because the process is too expensive and it degrades the plastic too much so you can't make anything useful out of it.
"he sounded pompous and faggy to them" This reminds me of community college when my classmates got passive aggressive with me because I got good test scores.
I love this film but it is also surprisingly very accurate. None of my college friends have kids, everyone else I know that barely graduated high school had kids at a young age and now those kids are already having kids of their own. 😭
@@DeHerg It was. But that study was in the 1980s. Since then there's been more research, and now we're dealing with the "reverse Flynn effect". Alas, I'm not joking. Look it up.
@Steven Sauer I know of that, but that effect is overall not even an effective decrease in intelligence. It's more that the linear difficulty increase of those tests to compensate for the FE does not correlate with the real effective increase. Meaning it's either an oscillation problem or it points to a more long-term plateau. I didn't mention that part because I thought the possible long term nonlinearity of the FE would overcomplicate the issue for the purpose of this comment section.
The suffix "-cracy" means "rule of". So democracy is the rule of the people, idiocracy is the rule of the idiots. Also, for things that the movie predicted: The most infamous one is probably that a certain former Reality TV star who had dabbled in Wrestling became US president.
@@helvete_ingres4717 cool, and you're acting like an arrogant tool with nothing better to do than be obnoxious in the comments section. Who cares if it's a common response? Why are you jumping on your high horse about it? There's nothing more cringey than pompous retorts like this.
Idiocracy was a highly underrated movie. It didn't help that distribution of the film to theaters was gimped on. The film had digital track and shipped to theaters with mono analog sound. I worked at a theaters as a projectionist during its run. It was under advertised and relegated to the smallest auditorium on release. In our 24 screen theater, it lasted only 2-3 weeks before getting delisted.
Excellent choice and reaction - that movie is definitely prophetic, the direction we're going. Not just commercialism, but degradation of language, social norms, etc is happening all over. Some say it goes in cycles, but it seems we're on the slippery slide down from now on! Enjoy the ride! :)
My nephew's favourite drink is Prime. I asked why and he said, "It's good for you. It has electrolytes." I automatically thought of Brawndo and this movie. We're nearly there.
I was lucky enough to have been able to see this in a theater because it was not widely distributed. Also, for a while, there was also a company that made a Brawndo energy drink and made some commercials. Highly recommend watching them.
Dax Shepard really gets overlooked in one of his best performances here because everyone gets caught up in the relevant commentary and brilliant script, as well as Luke Wilson being peak Luke Wilson.
Well, imagine a woman who couldn’t pass her GED becoming a congresswoman. Her husband exposed himself in a bowling alley to some teenagers, and she harassed neighbors over trivialities. Maybe the times are closer than you think as you also think about the different ladies who have run for office with commercials of Ak 47’s slung across their shoulders with big smiles on their faces.
- I think that Beef Supreme is played by the third Wilson brother. -- I genuinely find Joe's speech at Rehabilitation moving. - Can't say enough about how funny this movie is. Easy rewatch. VERY quotable. "What IS an electrolyte?!! DO'YA EVEN KNOW?!?!" - Fox News should HIRE the anchor from this movie. His cadence is on point. -- I'd like to think that if this had a sequel, or were made into a show, there would be an underground of secretly "smart" people in hiding, or hiding in plain site, and that Joe inspires them to come out of the darkness.
I am so glad you guys finally watched this. This is one of my favorite movies and the fact that Mike Judge hit the nail on the head with how accurate it is from like 20 years ago is staggering. I recently watched the interview with him on Joe Rogan and he talked about how miserable this movie was to make from budgeting to scheduling everything. The other hilarious thing he mentioned was the wardrobe designer telling him about these new plastic shoes that were terrible and perfect for the movie as there was no way they would ever get traction but looking at how popular Crocs became, he was astonished that people actually want to buy them... lol As far as foreshadowing the future goes, another one that was spot on and actually got the year right was the show "the last man on earth". Its about a pandemic that wipes out the entire population of the planet and he is the last one left. The timing was 100% correct for when it was set and when covid started spreading considering it was aired first in like 2015.
I haven't watched this reaction yet but this is one of my fav films of all time. The first time I saw it, I thought it was only okay but it gets better with every viewing. You by-pass the dated 90s style humor in the beginning and then you get to the real good stuff.
Back when the movie came out, I was absolutely convinced, that those first ten minutes are just the truth and nothing else and humanity will go down like that. Was I wrong? I mean, we are getting there.
@@DeHerg That's starting to reverse a bit though. Modern projections are that young people now will be the first generation in a while to have a lower IQ than the one preceding them. I don't want to say it's because Tik Tok is a an IQ vampire but...
@Tchikedy you personally? No. Moreso the fact that whenever this movie is just mentioned, there is a flood of people proclaiming it to be the prophecy that came true, despite the fact that reality is the polar opposite (flynn effect).
Mike Judge said he had everyone wear Crocs because it was the dumbest shoe a person could wear. At the time they were still being marketed as a comfortable boating shoe. Now they're everywhere.
When u guys were watching alita battle angel, and Simone said, “upgrade” when she found the URM body, I lost it 😂😂😂. I was like, “they have to watch idiocracy!” Read my mind👍
That scene where the "cabinet" is arguing Brawndo vs. water is a classic. I can't tell you how many arguments I've gotten into over the years that are just like, "It's got electrolytes," lol.
In present day, the supreme court ruled that candidates that have scored too high on IQ test can be and are preferably excluded from being hired on as cops. They're just ahead of the curve.
"so good, really funny, and sad... And SO frustrating" -- maybe the best short description of this movie I've ever heard. One of the best modern satires. Great reaction y'all.
Some countries had laws where people weren't allowed to collect rain water at the behest of large companies. Multinationals manage many of the basic infrastructure of Govts, sewage and water etc. Roads were done ages ago, which is why we have tolls. There was a conspiracy in California to run down the public transport systems and build more roads. The red/green LED on new phones has disappeared, specifically so it will force the user to pick up the phone and check the charge and thereby see any advert or notification on the screen. Technology is being used to collect information and stop people thinking. We are being squeezed into a system where we are just economic units and everything it being turned into a service to get a constant stream of money out of us. It's harder and more troublesome to repair things any more. The only thing the movie doesn't get right is there would be crops and no one would be starving as companies would just controlling that to fill full of sugar and caffeine, most likely genetically modified. There is already a sugar cartel which prevents competition in the US.
Omg finally lol. There's a shortage of reactions to this movie on for some reason. The cast is all hilarious especially Dax shepherd. So hard to quote this movie when it's still a bit of a cult classic. People are always like oh it's so true and it's prophetic but it's really just funny as hell. The names get me everytime. Beef Supreme, frito penedjo and of course Dwayne Herbert elizondo mountain dew Camacho.
As I understand it the studio buried this movie under pressure from the companies that paid for product placements. Starbucks and H&R Block paid to be in this movie and, among others (I get a Rupert Murdoch vibe), didn't like the portrayal of the new service industry. Comedy Central ran it often and then we all made friends with new people because they quoted this movie.
I saw this when it first came out on video. My best friends and I quote the movie often. It's sad how much this movie has become more and more realistic.
