Get started with bass chords and avoid the mud. These 2 easy shapes work in any key, and you’ll still hold down the low end.
Bass Chord Progressions Cheat Sheet - www.bassbuzz.c...
Bass chords can be awesome, but they can also be a huge muddy mess.
In this lesson, I’ll show you 2 easy bass chord shapes that work in any situation, anywhere on the bass (without sounding muddy).
Triads, the most common type of chord in rock/pop music, can cause problems on bass without some tweaking. So I’ll show you how we can take a basic triad and hack it apart into the super-usable chord shapes you’ll learn in this video.
Then I’ll show you how to play these two bass chord shapes, which are called “tenths,” in detail with fretting and plucking tips. (don’t worry, they’re super beginner-friendly)
After that we’ll jump right into playing some music along with Buffalo Springfield, Fleetwood Mac, and Alicia Keys.
But how do you know how to use these shapes to make your own music? It can be hit or miss to just guess without any theory. I’ll take you through the basic formula that most popular music uses, so you can come up with your own chord progressions that sound naturally good.
Then we’ll finish up by using the chord progression formula to write a quick song together. Plus I do some really good singing at 14m15. 😜
Don’t miss the next free bass lesson! Subscribe here - yeah.bassbuzz....

I have a Slammer! By Hammer! Just got it and starting out to play. My brother was playing like les claypool by the time he was 15 , he was amazing. I’ve been loving this new hobby and so far my favourite song I figured out to play along to is “a history of bad men” by the MELVINS! Lol I probably suck at it but it’s sooo fun. Definitely gonna sign up for a full course Josh, out of all the people on here, your teaching style is by far the best, and also most entertaining. Keep it up, and even somebody with the worlds tiniest hands and short ass fingers may have a chance :D hahaha

Lou Reed -Walk On The Wild Side- is where I learned to use this Root 10th technique when the band I was in covered the tune. The original had both an electric and an upright bass, whereas our cover band had just me on electric. Our keyboardist suggested I play the root-10th. It worked out quite well.

Hey Josh, I find myself troubeled when told to learn by ear. I fell like i cannot do it, i can recognise sounds of hammer-on's and slap and such but i don't really know how to tell apart notes or intervals, but my biggest problem is hearing the bass in songs I listen to. A guide on how to learn bass by ear would be appreciated if you can do a video on that sometime.
@BassBuzz
@BassBuzz 4 года назад
That's a huge topic! There's no quick fix, it's a neverending journey of attacking from many angles. You can start by working on interval recognition with drills like this: www.musictheory.net/exercises/ear-interval And make sure you know how to play those intervals on your bass so it all links up.

Hey Ben, yeah I just kinda skimmed over that since it wasn't the topic of the video. Editing comment - speed up your gags. Those swipe edits are okay... you use them a little too much, so they become a little grating, hearing them over and over again. What makes it worse, is they're a little slow. This is a finesse thing, like string relief, thousandths make a big difference. So, take a frame or two out of the swipe. Don't know how you're doing them, but rather thtan just taking a couple frames out, shorten the swipe itself, so from start to finish, a frame or two shorter. That's my suggestion. Thanks for these vids.

This is just a fantastic video, and you're an excellent teacher. Could we get more details on adding scale fills, in the context of the section on writing a song towards the end of the vid? Would that mean using scale notes around each chord in the progression from the original root scale or each chord's root's scale? I hope I am explaining myself clearly... 😊
@BassBuzz
@BassBuzz 4 года назад
Hey Ryan, good question. It could mean either of those options you described, both are good depending on the progression and what you want. (which is too complex to get into here).

Whenever im listsning to a song i usually dont hear the 3 or 4 note chord being played in an arpeggio but they have all these other notes within the song. Is there a technique to add extra notes to the chord?
@cactustactics
@cactustactics 4 года назад
Songs tend to be in a certain key - if you watch the bit where he shows you the chords in C major (C, Dm etc) they're all built off the notes in the C major scale, which goes C D E F G A B So those are the notes being used, and you can borrow any of those. All the chords are built off them too - C major is C E G, D minor is D F A and so on. If you notice, you're starting on a note, skipping one, grabbing the next, skipping one etc. You can do that again and get 7th chords, so Cmaj7 (CEGB), Dm7 (DFAC), and those notes are good ones to borrow. But you can use any from the scale! Which ones are good, that's a bit more complicated and takes some knowledge or experience - but none of those will sound wrong, it's just that some will sound more musical. Like you can use a note that's gonna be an important note in the next chord, so it kinda implies what's coming, that kind of thing. And you can add notes and chords that aren't in the key too, but that's a "knowing how to break the rules" thing ;)

I don't think they were making the 60s/70s distinction on the Vintage Modified series, just the Classic Vibe series that followed... but I'm not sure!

As is often the case when I engage with Josh’s lessons, I don’t necessarily learn anything new, but the way he walks you through it gives me a new perspective somehow. I’m so appreciative for what you’re doing. The bassbuzz BA lessons are truly amazing if you have the patience.

Not exactly what this video's about, but I wanna give a shoutout to 5ths! They're not just for distortion, throwing one in at the right time can really make the bass fill out. The bassist from Tricot does it a lot, it's a nice one to have in the dynamics toolbox

5ths are great! As long as you don't play them too low and make a mud puddle. :)

@@BassBuzz honestly I don't think it matters so much! They're so neutral it just kinda makes the root sound bigger or something, but yeah that's siutational

Ooh, I just figured out how major scales work. I'd been working off that lesson where you taught us that BC and EF are always buddy close and extra friendly but then I used the chord chart to try and figure out where the notes were and paid attention and realised that it's 3,4 and 7,8 that are always together (which is easy because 4 and 8 are clearly the best numbers). So now I know all the major scales on one string and in a second I'll work out what happens when I drop down five frets on the next string but I'm not there yet so no spoilers
