Have you done any videos about the magnifying glass. My uncle that taught me how to survive in the West Texas desert always carried one to start fires and to evaluate injuries and such as cuts.

Man this product is truly a life saver. If you were to break through ice and able to rescue yourself your first step to surviving hypothermia is to get a big fire going. I couldn’t imagine accomplishing this with a ferro rod or a lighter even after you’ve taken an icy plunge. This rig would definitely save your life if your motor skills were reduced. Thanks for sharing this James, it’s a really good one!

Thank you for this video. I always carry a 30-minute road flare whenever I am heading into the woods, even if it is just a day hike. The product you demonstrated looks like a great replacement for the road flare: Better sized, more convenient to light with frozen fingers. I need to get some to put in each backpack and in the "rescue box" of each vehicle. Again, thank you for this video.

Looks like the same principle as "highway flares". Highway flares can be found with different times. My Dad was a railroad engineer, and long burning flares were a part of the emergency kit that the train crews used. Thanks for the demonstration. Stay well & safe... Cheers.

Yeah that would definitely be a must carry item. And not just for the sake of starting a fire for its own sake. But to help people out when clean portable water is in short supply. So long as you have one of these and a container you can boil water in you’re almost guaranteed to have safe clean water to drink. One of these, a good supply of wood, and a restaurant sized stock pot can make you a supply of clean safe water that can easily last you for days.

Is there anything y'all can't get at Canadian Tire? I've never been in or even close to one but I am amazed at all the RU-vid videos over the years where the presenter or commenters have said this or that can be purchased at Canadian Tire. It sounds like a cool store. In the U.S. if a store is called 'XYZ Tire' then that means they sell, well, tires. Maybe related things like wheels, brakes, shocks and so on - maybe, but not necessarily. They probably aren't going to be selling camping gear and a million, other things.

Glad to know your breathing is OK! I saw that fire starter used on a camping video, but you really showed how well it works. Having one or more of these could save the life of anyone who spends time in the woods and has a chance of getting lost, caught by a blizzard, flood, needs to build a fire for signaling. I read about one man who got lost and was facing death after several days, when he found the dead body of another person who had gotten lost in the same area. It was at least a year old as I recall. In the corpse’s pockets he found a plastic bag with a few matches inside. He lit a tree on fire and the huge blaze brought help in a short time (they thought it was a forest fire) and saved his life.

It's about time someone with a brain turned a road flare into a pack friendly outdoors fire starter. I carry 3 tinders and 3 ignition methods, it sounds like a lot but Vaseline cotton balls, Trioxane tabs, fatwood, a bic, a ferro rod, and and magnifying card are surprisingly light. I'll be adding this as a 4th method. It's overkill even if light....but never having to worry about being able to get a fire going is priceless.

Great idea ! I am happy that you took the plastic debris and put it in your pocket. Plastic debris can poison nature for 300 years. One should clean up always any plastics. You gave the example.

I'm always looking for redundancy in fire making items for my backpacks. These are usually already lightweight and apart from shelter and water, fire is one of the most important parts of camping, hiking or survival. It is one of the essential Cs, so another reliable method in an emergency is a good idea.

People they looked up to like Eugene V Debs (fellow Hoosier), Big Bill Haywood, etc. they fought countless battles against big corporations and many were traveling workers. In fact one of the most renowned figures is Cesar Chavez who helped unionize many migrant farm and agriculture laborers. Many a Hobo was a card carrying Wobbly (IWW Member, just like me). Regardless your personal take on what’s going on now I think it’s a great time to look back to and appreciate. Certainly the last time the working class had any fight in them. Love the content, I binged a ton and love it. If you’re ever up for a discussion on the topic let me know!

My favorite is makeup removers with about 1 part kerosene to 5 part candle wax. Double boiler, melt, put kerosene in, soak them for 3 seconds, pull them out and let them cool

That will be a great addition to a persons kit, whether in your pack, vehicle or even a snowmobile. Every ice fisherman and snowmobile rider should have one. Think how this would save after going in the water and you are shivering so much it is difficult to light a fire.

I saw an old man late 70s early 80s review these for his backyard BBQ pit. He has trouble with lighters and matches now and used one of these and he turned into a lil kid all excited seeing everything burn so fast. Amazing how it burns wet wood, I'd say it would work in rain.

Good content as always. A young guy solo canoeing with just a dog you actually described my thinking about fire starting. I figured I was wet, tired, and maybe hurt. So I carried road 2 flares. (Plus more common fire starters.) These might have been a better choice.

Having allowed my hands to get so cold in the past that any dexterity was very limited as well as painful. Even traditional fire making methods were difficult and very challenging in order to warm hands and be able to perform needed tasks. I experimented with something similar, but certainly nothing as effective as this item. Thank you so much for introducing me. Continued Success.
