As if messing around with the King’s Guards wasn’t bad enough, there are people who mess with the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier too. Hey, everyone! Today we are going to share with you more about the guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The monument in Arlington Cemetery is so prestigious, that only a special, handpicked group of soldiers are chosen for the job. These guys are all about discipline, and they guard the tomb the entire year, defending the monument against vandals and anyone who would seek to dishonor the interned. So, today, we’re going to check out more reasons why you should never mess with the guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

This is very moving. The Sentinels are highly respected in the fact that they guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24 7. God Bless each and every one of them.

As a British 🇬🇧 ex vet I have had the honour to have visited London- Buckingham Palace and Horse Guards and the Tower of London and Windsor. I have also visited Arlington Cemetery and took in the US tomb of the unknown soldier 🇺🇸. All very impressive but whatever creed or Nationality you are just remember the poor soldier lying in state there and reflect that for your tomorrow, he gave his today. Thank you.

You go there not to see the guards, but to pay your respect to the Unknown Soldier. The guards merely protect the dignity of the tomb. It is their job and privilege to do so. Your best acknowledgement of this is to visit the site reverently.

I won't tell you what YOU go there for but WE went to pay our respects AND to wintness the ceremony of the changing of the guard and observe and respect their professionalism, all of which was in great part to instill the value of these things in our children at the time. One of them ended up serving in the US Army, including a year in Afghanistan and was honorably discharged as a major.

I was there when I was about 10 Tomb of the unknown soldier, but I understood the respect for the dead and heard an adult get yelled by the soldier, they had it coming.....

There once was a full-blown hurricane headed toward Washington DC, and the guards guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given the option of _not_ going out to do their guard duty that day due to the risk. However, all of the guards decided to do their duty anyway.

There has never been such an option - that is purely a made up story. Option was to stand guard at the top of the stairs, by the Trophy Room, directly in front of the Unknowns. Everyone chose to stay on the plaza.

They are referred to as Sentinels. The walk is twenty-one steps, repeat until relieved. Extreme weather and VIP wreath laying ceremonies the Sentinel stands watch in a small shelter (aka guard box). Racking the rifle's bolt is usually enough to dissuade the unruly after yelling at them.

Tell me people, if you go to a cemetery to a special family member, do you all respect all of the other graves that are there, or do you just walk over them like most people. There are people in cemeteries that have done very brave things also. But I guess you all just walk over those ones too right!!!

There were four unknown soldiers. The first one, in the elevated tomb, is from the First World War. Then there were added three additional tombs. One for World War Two, the Korean War, And the Vietnam War. However, the soldier from Vietnam was subsequently identified, disinterred, and buried elsewhere according to his family’s wishes. The other three are still there, in their respective tombs.

And why would they do that? Also, you do know that "Antifa" is a made up boogieman. There may be some idiots who wear black and run around breaking things, but that does not make the existence of some sort of organized leftie terrorist movement a reality. Meanwhile we have multiple fascists and Neo-nazi militias in this country (although they are yahoos for the most part, and wouldn't last more than minutes up against a national Guard unit). I participated in the anti-Trump inaugural march in DC in 2017. Around 15k people peacefully marching. Only presidential election I have ever protested against (first voted in 1978). A group of around 30 black clad people with bandanas on their faces peeled off and burned a limo, threw stuff at cops, broke a window in a Starbucks. Most got arrested. Just saw the aftermath. The news just showed the burning limo; score one for a group of idiots coopting someone else's peaceful political speech. Meanwhile, Trump is a wanna be fascist dictator, just needs a snazzy uniform. He checks all the boxes of promoting fascism over and over with speech and action. And still, where is Antifa?

While the subject material is a matter of respect, the video itself was garbage. Needless and irrelevant comments were made. That post is treated like a church with a time to sit or kneel or stand. At this place, you remain standing and silent. You are making too much noise if you can't hear the tapping of their heels the entire time. A show of respect goes a long way.

The last point made (The guards don't display any rank) is refuted by the video, which clearly shows NCOs displaying sleeve rank. It is a nice sentiment, but not correct. Sorry. Not to take anything away from the magnificence displayed by our Tomb Guards.

The sentinel actually walking the mat displays no rank. The Sgt of the Guard displays his rank - he isn't walking the mat. He is in charge of those that do. It's that simple. The video is accurate. I was in The Old Guard and had friends who were at/had been at the Tomb. Any Old Guardsman is familiar with that set-up actually.

I haven’t watched this particular video since reading the comments made it obviously a waste of time. However, since I’m here I’d like to appeal to the American Public to watch some of our videos on the Household Cavalry (U.K.) They are fully trained regular soldiers covering a traditional (since 1660’s) duty but they’re constantly taunted by tourists and, whilst I’ll admit that the Americans aren’t the worst, they’re certainly up there towards the top of the list. Please remember if you or someone you know is visiting London how you feel if your sentries at Arlington are disrespected and put yourselves in the place of our young Troopers. Thank you.

Each member of the tomb guard has a rank and only the officers do not wear their rank while working at the tomb. All ENLISTED show their rank.

There are no officers, and if you are guarding the Unknowns you do not wear rank. It is only worn by someone changing the guard or hosting a wreath.

Actually, they're marching in a very precise manner. They're marching from their hips down, one foot in front of the other. As they take each step they glide, not bounce. It isn't as easy as it looks. It takes alot of practice and drill to do everything precisely and correctly. It does look funny when a single person does it, like at the Tomb, but when a formation of men do it, it doesn't stand out so much. Also, at the Tomb the Sentinels march slower than the normal pace, so that adds to the oddness. Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense to you.

Sunglasses are worn when necessary and have been for decades. Yes, it is part of the SOP. Oakley makes these specially designed glasses exclusively for TUS.

@@minime5380 Typically the Relief Commander makes the call. Sometimes the guard on the mat will call down, saying glasses on or off shortly before the guard change. Occasionally you will see them being worn with winter uniform. Can still be pretty intense, particularly with the glare of snow.

Veteran here and as much as I love tradition and respect I have to wonder why so much effort goes into this one place when the whole of Earth is a Tomb for those who helped humanity rise to Civilization and it is treated very poorly by the vast Majority. That's an active cemetery, not just a tourist trap. Many people are there to visit the graves of family every day. Every day several people are interred/buried. There isn't a weekday when that isn't happening. I know that for a fact because I performed many of them back in the day. " IT IS REQUESTED " is a polite way of saying "YOU WILL" to civilians. If they dont't obey the rules they will either be removed, or arrested if necessary. Arlington National Cemetery is NOT the place to play your games, and it has nothing to do with Trump. That's the way it has ALWAYS been. It was the same under the other Presidents. Seek treatment for your Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). The 8 years of media anti-Trump smear propaganda has you just babbling nonsense.

My duty at with The Old Giuard doing burial honors at Arlington was more than 40 yrs ago and the rules were the same back then. The only thing different now is people are using the Constitution or Trump as their excuse to be rude, break rules, act outrageously/violently or be disrespectful.
