Anti semitism in Roma has always been strong among extreme right and left movements, although not in a violent way. But today, with the influx of North Africans, black and Indian Muslims the situation for Jews in italy and all over Western Europe has become real and dangerous.

There are a lot of Jews living in Tunisia, in Tunis, Sousse and Djerba. I wouldn't say 10k but more like 1-2k but in the past it was a lot more than 10k. Unfortunately after Israel was created a lot emigrated there. Our minister of Tourism few years ago was even a Jew but tbh, Tunisians overall don't care about your religion. I am not saying they are all good, it's the same in every country, a*sholes existe everywhere, but above all we are educated thanks to our first president who invested a lot in education, we are very liberal country (compared to other 'muslim' countries'). I am an atheist myself, my dad is muslim, my mom is christian and her nanny used to be a Jew. The only problem is politics as Tunisia and Israel have no diplomatic relations (Tunisians can't use their passports in Israel and vice versa for Israelis in Tunisia) but still, a lot of Israelis (the ones that have a double nationality) come to Djerba for pilgrimage every year and they are always welcomed. @theSalukie check out "Al Ghriba" synagogue, afair it's the oldest synagogue in Africa. If u wanna visit you are more than welcome. Also Shakshuka is a Tunisian jewish dish that got popular in Israel thanks to Sefarads from Tunisia. They are still a part of our culture, for eg. they invented the 'Boukha' which is a Tunisian vodka etc. Too sad politics divided us...@dougbarker2227
Unfortunately, antisemitism is strong among far lefties and immigrants from the Middle East here in Norway. The few Jews we have in Norway start to feel unsafe, and that's sad. Most of us are against Isreals extreme reactions after the terror attacks, because it's the civilians who suffer. And yes, it's difficult when Hamas use civilians as shields but Israel has to stop the bombing which kills so many civilians. However, people need to stop blaming Jews for what is happening but blaming the government in Israel instead.

I am a gay Lithuanian man and I support Israel. I met gay Israelis in Paris and Madrid who were at the Pride Parade. They were very friendly and kind people and told me Israel has a Pride Parade and gay people are welcome in the country. They suggested I visit Israel and I will in the future.

I never personally experienced discrimination of any kind for being Jewish. I definitely experienced it for being American (I’m Swedish and American). Italians are very protective of Italian culture. Ryan is not an Italian name, and you were speaking with a group of people that are actually not well integrated into or well accepted or well liked by many in the Italian community. Foreigners of all kinds are absolutely judged in Italy, with many preconceptions. Communities from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia often claim to be Italian to non-Italians. My experience is many bring in petty crime like pickpocketing, bike theft and openly sold drugs in the streets, especially hashish but other drugs too. I had Israeli friends and dated an Israeli man in Italy. I do not know of issues they experienced in terms of antisemitism. The group you spoke with could have gone either way. It’s not worth pushing them. You could have met people who were embracing of you, but the likelihood of that not happening is high. For him to tell you f-Israel when he knows you’re Israeli is hostile. He might not be attacking you directly, but you could find yourself in a situation where he or his friends notified others who would want to harm you for their own reasons. I think you have good intentions in many ways, but I am also concerned you may have a death wish. I speak many languages too, though I chop my way through many (as you do too, but it’s still impressive & your English is excellent), and I love to travel the world. You have contributions to make. Don’t let these be cut short by some unhinged stranger who feels or is provoked past their tolerance, which may be slim to none. Be good. Stay safe. Good wishes.
There are a lot of North Africans in Italia because of History. It goes far to Roman Empire and Carthage (There is a big Tunisian community in Sicily and Sicily was part of Carthage, alsso geographically it's very close) same goes with North African in France (that colonised almost the whole North Africa), hence a lot of North africans are there (majority of their grandparents fought againt Nazis and Vichy with DeGaulle)

But the fact that you are American was probably apparent to most people you communicated with pretty quickly, whereas being Jewish was not, no? Even if you had a perfect Italian accent, discussing your country of origin (at least in the case that it's assumed to be another western country) generally seems to be within the bounds of acceptable, polite conversation with strangers and new acquaintances, but discussions of ethnicity/religion less so.

Mate, Rome has a long tradition in accepting forigners , they'll get along with any nationality.. They are used of seeing forigners from all over the world. It's a turistic city and It's also a religious destination because of the vatican. Pilgrins have visited Rome for centuries. Rome has also a big jewish community. If you go to Milan, things change.
