In this vidoe I will walk you through how to update your BMW idrive system in 3 simple steps.
1. Locate VIN Number. (which I will show you how).
2. Download Software from BMW using your computer to USB stick.
3. Install Software to your idrive system.
This update software will enhance your operating system, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, bmw connect app and much more.

wow this is what I was looking for!! It successfully updated my media as well. I have a 2015 335i and every time i skip a song the first one will stay on display for ever. It wasn't a big deal but it kinda bothered me, but with this software update it got fixed. Thank you so much for this video!!

Wow I’m just watching this video for the first time and that problem isn’t a huge deal but it bothers me every single day because I play music from an app on my phone and no matter what song plays, it only shows the info from the first song. I’m hoping this will fix my problem.

Thank you so much for your video. You may remember me as your neighbour. I have similar car to yours (recently purchased few months back), 2018 model with SOS call notification message on dashboard. By following your video, I updated the 2018 software update to link my latest Samsung phone to the vehicle (1 minute to update). This saved me £300 by not going to BMW garage for software update and the notification message disappeared.

I have read that you need to unpack the bin file that you download from BMW update website before you connect your flash drive to the vehicle? Says it will not work unless you unpack- which is almost impossible to figure how to do that...are you sure if you connect your flash drive with the bin file from BMW that this will work without unpacklng that file?

Thanks for the info, with your help I've managed to update my idrive on my 4 series. I've got one question, how do I get my idrive welcome animation to show on-screen before it goes straight onto the main menu page when I start the vehicle. Is there a setting for that?

Well done for updating successfully. Idrive will only animate when it’s boot up but not every time your start your engine. If you want to animate different logo such as m performance, you will need to code it and I have a dedicated video for that in this channel using Carly app and dongle.

If you vehicle does not have the supporting hardware it won’t work. This software update helps your Bluetooth connectivity etc.

Does doing this add a sat nav to your screen display? I’ve got a 13 plate 1 series and wondering if I have to take it to bmw for them to put the navigation onto the car or will this do it?

If you did not have sat Nav, this method will not give you sat Nav. Updating your idrive helps with connectivity, removes glitches and for those who have satnav, they will get Morden version.

This software update helps most of data such as map etc but not entire sure of SOS. There are no harm in updating software. My suggestion is to contact your local BMW if you haven't already since your is still under warranty.

Hi, I don’t think 2013 is supported but no harm trying. This update helped Bluetooth connectivity, the map shows 3D building on iconic buildings such as London eye & London Bridge etc.

If your vehicle supports voice command then it should work. For example, my vehicle does not support this so updating software will not help.

I got a 2013 420d , and Bluetooth only works on call audio…will it update the Bluetooth as well ? Will I be able to play music via Bluetooth ?

If your vehicle did not come with manufacturer Bluetooth full capability then updating idrive software would not gain you extra features. When you download new software it asks your VIN so it knows the capabilities

Have you formatted your usb correctly? There should be no files in the usb.

To install satnav if it did not come with it from manufacturer, you will need to purchase as ad on from BMW website if your idrive is compatible. I would thought all BMW from 2011 should have satnav from baseline.

Hi, no this update will not give you GPS. You can purchase GPS from BMW connect website if your vehicle is compatible. This update is for connectivity issues and GPS road updates for those who already have gps built in.

I have noticed on mine 3D maps in special areas like London Bridge and tall towers such as shard. It also enhances connectivity. It does not give you apple car play if you don’t have that feature already.

Hi Danny, Have you previously had Bluetooth capabilities? Some Older BMWs does not support Bluetooth music. My sibling has 1 series 2012 and it does not have Bluetooth music play.

To update GPS you need to purchase via BMW connected drive or third party providers. If you have idrive 7 or newer, you can update it remotely if purchase idrive package or via usb stick for older vehicles.

I think the only option is through OBD reader. You will need to find a technician who can update idrive system and it more cost you a lot.

This works great if you have the stock head unit. But I upgraded my CCC to a CIC and when I put my VIn in the site it tells me that my car is not available to upgrade. How the heck do I work around that?

@@dompowa6705 you have to search in the model of your car in various groups to find work around. I searched for months till I found a person that knew how to findangle idrive settings. Unfortunately I paid for the unit plus cables and there were some adapters missing to connect the combox to the Fibre so now my stereo sounds craptastic and I don't have Bluetooth which was the point of changing in the first place...

Thank you for your time to share with us. I tried to download the software but for some reason it doesn't work. I saved it manually and the file is there and it says that it has 8,270 kb but when I try to install it the drive isn't recognized as having anything on it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have a F07 which is not on your list. Is this the reason?

F07 is 5 series right? If yes it should work. Have you formatted your usb correctly? If your vehicle idrive is up to date, it will not install new one.

@@APTechs Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, the F07 is 5 series, GT 535i. I just purchased the car a week ago and the navigation is grayed out. It has tried on occasion to try and connect but never successful and goes away. BMW says the system was changed in 2016(?) I believe which is why it isn't connecting so I'm sure it isn't updated. It's just that there is nothing on the USB drive so it seems. When I manually save the file (as it won't download), it says there's 8,270 kb but when it didn't work and I deleted the file it said 0 bytes. Confused!

@AP Tech as far as I know it's fitment correctly. My only options for formatting is ex-fat and ntfs. I've tried both and neither works.

I don’t think so. You BMW may not have the supporting hardware and software. This process should at least update your Bluetooth.

Where do you download the software from? Never mind I found it. It says that my vehicle is up to date and there is nothing to download. I have a 2018 x5 f15 and the sat radio/ navigation and carplay all quit working after I coded out the passenger seatbelt. I restored the backup and nothing. I used Carly.

You may have accidentally deleted the retrofit coding you had by restoring original. You can restore from Carly again if it saved a date on the ECU back to what it was. Alternatively you can get CarPlay from connect drive app if you have previously purchased this service.

Hello mate, I have a 60 reg F10 with Bluetooth telephone and navigation but no usb in the centre console but one in the glove box. There is a software update for my car but I don’t have a software update in my menu under settings. I can import driver profiles from the usb in the glove box but don’t see any software update in the settings menu even with the update file on a formatted usb stick. How do I know which software version my car is currently on? And how to update via glove box USB port pls? Tia

You can check current status software by checking in your idrive software section. The USB your using is fully empty and formatted to the correct file type? I don’t think USB port location has any impact as long as the port works. You can test it by playing usb music etc.

@@APTechs thanks. I remember being able to display software version a few years ago. I don’t have Bluetooth multimedia. The usb stick is formatted correctly and the update file is on there. I can export and import driver profiles from the USB port with a usb stick. Just no software update tab in idrive settings menu...

Hi, does the USB show up in your setting and software update lights up (I.e not grey)? If yes, depending on the age of your vehicle, BMW might have discontinued updating idrive.

If BMW are releasing updates it should update. It’s worth giving a try, I have updated mine last year so not sure if they release updates each year. The BMW website will tell you if i3 has any updates…

@@APTechs strange, my maps are not up to date cause my street is missing but when i go to the website it says my software is up to date. is it possibly because it's a different model? it's a LCI 640d, and when I go through the My BMW app it says it would cost me £49 to update the maps for a year.

Hi Titomo, my BMW is hybrid and when I press ignition once it does not kill the power complete and it remains as standby. The aim here is turn off engine completely so ECU is rebooted.

I need help , my 2015 328i M Performance doesn't have maps or navigation. I have tried downloading updates from BMW into a flash drive ( well formatted) but nothing , I don't even have the "software upgrade" option available to click and when I go to maps it doesn't have a version so it looks like it didn't have any installed. Any suggestion on how to fix this, anything helps, thanks

Hi Randy, it’s strange for 2015 model not to have maps etc. Have you modified your idrive system? If it’s manufacturers idrive system, the process on this video should work if your idrive is not up date. Have you attempted contacting BMW for their thoughts why it does support maps etc.

@@APTechs Hi , it does have the maps and Bluetooth they just don’t work , Bluetooth only works for calls not for media and maps keep loading but never finish. It’s definitely strange since I have professional radio . I will try contacting them again but last time they sent me to bmw dealer , thanks for your reply

Hi George, this could be two reasons why it’s grey. a) usb not formatted correctly b) your vehicle already has most up to date software or no update available due to vehicle age.

My car is a BMW 330e 2017 and my quick search navigation isn’t working properly. It keeps showing nothing found when I enter a postcode, but when I enter anything else like road name, it does work. Please can you help me with this problem?

Have you attempted updating software following process mentioned in this video? To be honest anything related to navigation, I use BMW connected app where I send message as test to the car and it navigates me. I made a separate video on this can be found on my channel if you didn’t know. This maybe a solution for you if software update doesn’t work. Hope this helps.

If there are no software available, this could mean that they have discontinued updating. You can try using newer vehicle VIN but not sure if it will work.

Hi Paul, Have you formatted your usb to the correct format? If yes, then I can only assume your vehicle is up to date. Try formatting your usb to M.DOS Fat

@@APTechs Unfortunately didnt work. I don't get the option to format to M.DOS Fat as I'm on windows but I believe exFAT is the same. I have been told my iDrive needs to be reflashed or something

If the BMW website states no software available, it means they have discontinued updating for 2013 which is annoying. Are you currently facing any issues with your idrive?

If there are no updates on BMW website, I’m afraid this sounds like they have discontinued updates for 2012 or f30s. If you figure out alternatives let us know. Eager to find out too.

@@APTechs I actually never updated my iDrive, but it seems is should be doable as you do. What do you think. Would be good if you can mail me/anyone an update and try to update like that? Can I harm iDirve if I do that?
