IDW have been slowly imploding for over 5 years. Recently a mass exodus from the comics publisher started and continued this week. IDW's EIC is leaving his position after only a short time and there is now an owner change. BOOM! Studios are also experiencing upheaval as the American comic industry crunch continues. It’s sad. I’ve been reading IDW’s Saturday Morning Cartoons series. The Dungeons and Dragons and TMNT comics have been pretty fun.

It was envetiable. Even Sonic the Hedgehog and TMNT couldn't save IDW from its slow death. Their biggest mistake was hiring Heather Antos who is, in my eyes, the grim reaper of the comic industry.

DC is done. They are really only concerned with that NFT garbage. Jim Lee is very active in it. They even started dropping current issues as drops.

The worst thing that happened to Dark Horse Comics was when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and took Alien, Predator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Planet of the Apes etc. Plus they lost Conan the Barbarian.

i had supported IDW since 30 Days of Night # 1, and was buying almost everything Steve Niles was writing until this franchise started going downhill. I was there for their Angel, Transformers and X-Files comics. So sad IDW imploded the way it did. Never cared for BOOM though. Their Buffy and Firefly comics were terrible compared to the Dark Horse era. I have been surprisingly happy with Valiant since Alien Books took over, certainly much better than the DMG/Dan Mintz era. Still not quite at good as when Dinesh Shamdassni was running the show though.

The problem is to many comics today are just rejected movie script, they used the medium of comics as a stepping stone to try to get the interest of a film producer and its sad while disprecting the craft of comics. When it happened to walking deading or the boys it took years for those shows to become tv shows because it was organic and natural now all of these new indie comics for these studios like boom are repetitive and desperate for hollywood.

@@maxmazzotti6651 You are talking about the tippy top. Every business has millionaires at the very top. You also mentioned creators working during the peak of the last comic book boom. The rest of us work our asses off for the average American income. Not a complaint. It’s just reality that I don’t think most fans get. They don’t understand that the local school teacher makes more money than 90% of comic book artists. Especially since 2015.

They're already working on a video game and an R rated movie so both will probably make bank, but IDW probably won't get profits from it, however they can probably see a small bump in sales of the hardcover

To be fair to the Bloodshot movie (which was decent), it released about a week before most of the country shut down due to Covid. It was never going to be a blockbuster, but it was far better than its revenue would suggest.

I’ve been reading through the Valiant 2012 relaunch. Kinda halfway through a lot of the launch series like XO, bloodshot, harbinger, archer & Armstrong, and quantum and woody. I know Wes has said Bloodshot is good through Jeff Lemire. Are any of the other 2nd series worth reading? I know a bunch of them go back to number 1s after issue 25.

They are throwing money away on crap we all know doesn't sell. Oh wait, silly me. They are writing crap that doesn't sell. Yeah. let them carry on LOL

Yeah, Boom do some good shit but they're being dragged down by the overall slump in the industry. I get Thundercats from Dynamite and the Red Sonja titles but the interior artists on the RS stuff are pretty bad.

@@locusmortisyeah I gave up on RS. But I love Space Ghost, Thoris and Gargoyles. Dynamite really is a sleeping giant at this point. The Alice Cooper stuff, Evil Ernie etc. has been top quality.

I noticed there is a new TMNT Universe series starting now along with the new TMNT Reboot.. that pretty much made me cancel everything.. I don't want 6 B Side Project starring the TMNT. I just want one good decent story with them. God I hate this do more with less that every single company is trying to accomplish these days..

You build companies on Brands that people are loyal too. You rarely make it on acquisitions of other peoples brands without any understanding of what made them work. Regardless what Microsoft and Disney say: buying everything is not the solution to your problem. And if you are a IDW or Darkhorse who only have so much money to spend - you can't do like Disney and Microsoft and write off the loses of a bunch of bad acquisitions to miscreants in the audience. They needed some hit properties that they did not mismanage, and their own IP (a mega-hit) - the way Marvel and DC got their start.

I really enjoy the current IDW Star Trek and Star Trek Defiant series: a great continuation of ST:TNG and DS9. I'd be sorry to see them go, but my wallet would be happy to free up more funds. Great job on toning down y'all's language a bit. I don't think I heard the F-word once (but I skim the videos). Please keep it up.

I wanted to sell and be in comics too Aaron....but mercurial is the nice way to describe comic shop owners, publishers, and others in the industry. Hey if you ever have need of a 20 plus year comic retail veteran, who has a wide scope of skills, please let me know. I can live with what I am doing now...but never say never as they say. WTF20.

The slow implosion of IDW is terrible. However, most of their comics are terrible. TMNT has been bad for a while, the Star Trek books are ok, but nothing special. Sonic is probably the best. I can see Boom collapsing too. Their headline series - Power Rangers - seems to be winding down and has been awful since 2022. Amy Jo Johnson's Pink Ranger series was good though.

Agree with most of this but I don’t think Jason Aaron is the damaged brand you guys thing he is. Batman Offworld is excellent. His 3 issue Superman arc was also very good, one of the best Bizarro stories I’ve read. The Jason Aaron who wrote Scalped and Southern Bastards still exists. Plus I think people conflate what they don’t want to see happen to a character with bad writing - I don’t like what Marvel did with my favourite character, but that run is very well written. I suspect Aaron’s Turtles is going to be huge. Comics fans are ridiculously fickle, need to take a step back now and again and see the bigger picture.

I do speak openly when I say I want to just draw a comic! I love to do a covers, I want to do the interiors, and I want to tell a story! If there happens to be a movie or some kind of video game out of it...awesome! Honestly, I want this to lead to more design and illustration jobs for me because I love to create! With an exception or two, IDW stopped publishing "The Library of American Comics" hardcover collections of newspaper comic strips. This was a significant line of books, Sunday Press is now picking up the project. Its demise is a sign of the IDW problems, some of the books were tied in with Disney, Marvel, and DC.

It’s not just comic books, everywhere is you look…tv the major networks are having trouble. Music industry more bands are retiring and not enough new musicians are coming in. Things are shutting down around my town, we don’t have book stores or movie theaters. I don’t see any movies worth watching! I talk with my friends all the time about places closing. I used to look forward to buying comic books, I don’t even miss comic book stores. There’s nothing to buy.

Seems that the "Fourth Big Company" (in American comics) has been posion chalice, whether it is spoken of Dark Horse (thankfully the owner sold out to Endevour), IDW and BoomStudio are going out of the business by following the "community" instead of thinking of it as an industry. A Comic book industry. It's been over half a decade and it has to be stated that they have been hemorrhaging money for longer. TMNT got turned into a fan fick, GI Joe was sacrificed on the alter of identity politics, along with Transformers. You can think of Sonic, True Blood, Star Trek, forget about them. The products that made them money were their games division, which was "offloaded".
