IEW (DVD version) was so helpful in teaching my middle school child how to take notes from a class, how to organize her work, how to take notes from source texts, and how to break down a paper into bite-size chunks. This is all besides learning how to write papers. It is worth every penny I spent.

I was so resistant to doing IEW. I had heard two opinions. One was that it was so different and hard to transition. The other party loved it. My son is a sophomore in high school and through the years his writing never really improved. After 8 lessons of IEW we are finally seeing improvements. I am now also using the program with my other two kids. I also love Fix it Grammar and the way it integrates vocabulary. The program comes with a higher price tag but worth every penny.

I agree!! Some kids just need to be a taught a process. How do you actually out a paper together??? That’s how IEW does so well! Opinions are hard. It’s always good to understand peoples reasons why they like or a dislike a curriculum. And just because somebody doesn’t care for it, doesn’t mean it wouldn’t work for you! I’m glad you tried it and are seeing success with it!

This program was amazing for my daughter in our homeschooling journey. She was able to join the honors program in her undergraduate program largely due to what she learned about writing from IEW. She even took the high school essay program with her to college to use as reference in her honors literature history and religion courses as all the tests were essay based and she did VERY well! If your child is college bound this program is invaluable!❤

I am so thankful for you! I have an 8th grader and 10th grader (who was in a private online school and her annual testing went DOWN drastically so I'm back to the drawing board). I have used IEW vocab but trying to figure out the right English for them is SO HARD. I am really trying to not have to take the course to teach myself....but deciding how to choose which course for which grade is SO hard. I watched your other video on the FixIt Grammar and I'm starting them both on 1 and planning on getting through both 1&2...but anyway, thank you for spelling this all out for those of us that are trying to figure out which curriculum for IEW. When I listened to Andrew Pudewa during one of the teacher lessons, he explained the process of working through the checklists without confusion. It worked like this: As I write sentence 1, pick something from the checklist to add in. Sentence 2, find something else to add in, and so on. Rough draft should be used to make sure everything is in there , spelling errors, etc. Then hand back to student to correct errors for final draft. Therefore everything should be in the final version, or they fix it again. After I went through my daughter doing this, it improved her writing tenfold!!! I was so glad I got the teachers lessons. You have so much less work for the students this way, and it made so much sense to her!!! My daughter is in 9th grade and we started with level C as first year for us based on what IEW told me. I’m so glad we are doing this course, but it is a lot of work and time consuming. I do not plan to do year 2. That’s my 2 cents. Thanks for the comparison.

Hmmm….if you’re joining CC, you should have access to the Teaching style & structure videos. Ask your director. But every community is supposed to have those videos and often they throw viewing parties to watch them. But your director might also lend them to you if you ask. 😉 But in the essentials class, the tutor will also teach you what you need to know. So I personally think you’ll do fine without the videos. I'm bringing IEW into my homeschool! I debated between these two and I think I am going with the theme courses for my upcoming 6th & 8th grade girls. 8th grader is very talented writer but very "disorganized" in life.....I don't know how to adequately describe her but remember she is the one that is your daughter's long lost twin haha. I have never done a formal writing curriculum with her because she is always SO resistant to curriculum. She did extremely well with Lost Tools this year in Ch A BUT I feel like she is "missing out" having never done IEW writing (since we did not do CC Essentials). SO I am making her doing IEW this summer. And I am trying to decide between theme books vs Structure & Style. I am 99% sure I am going to go with themes. I have been doing All Things Fun and Fascinating with my current 5th grader (reluctant writer) and I have been extremely impressed with the course so far. We are on lesson 5....I think. I love how it teaches writing. Back in the age of dinosaurs, I used to teach writing to 4th graders in public school. So far, I feel like teaching my daughter myself from the theme book pages has gone very well. The length of the videos scares me which is the main reason why I am leaning 99% towards theme writing for both girls next year. My oldest will continue with Ch B & Lost Tools, but again, I feel like she could benefit from IEW writing and MAYBE pick up some organizational skills when it comes to writing. I was excited to see this video. I may have watched it when it came out 5 months ago but I am going to rewatch it now because I hope it will seal the deal on that 1%. haha.

Yea you could! HOWEVER….keep in mind that the video for level 1 will only go through unit 7, I believe. The US history goes through unit 9. And the level 1 videos will be working “together” on the assignments for level 1. So once you know what you’re supposed to do (as teacher) then you could probably NOT finish that part of the video and switch over to work on the US history exercise that corresponds. Another option…. Instead of getting the level 1 videos, you could get the teaching style and structure videos. Those are geared towards the teacher. So would teach you how to teach. I assume, however, that you’re wanting your child to watch the videos. To switch back to the US history, your child may need your help to work through the Key Word Outline or the exercise they did in the video class. I hope that makes sense! 😉

So for each school year, you don't choose a themed unit AND a S&S level? You do whichever you want, but IEW would suggest S&S primarily? Am I understanding this correctly? We are coming from BJU (if you're able to compare that at all) but needing a change. I did get the free 3 weeks and will do that to finish out this year as a test run. We're looking for more fun (and better) writing and more streamlined. Also, how independent vs mom-involved are the themed and the S&S? My kids are 10 and 13.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Год назад
The themed units are different writing assignments than the S&S. S&S has its own writing assignments. But everything I compared here teaches the exact same process. Unit 1 is key word outlines in every program. Unit 2 is writing from that outline, etc. but the TEXTS they use to write from are different. The S&S has videos. Themed does not. But if you have already done the S&S and wanted to rewatch the teaching videos, it’s the same ideas. S&S is obviously more independent bc the videos do the teaching. HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean that the themed couldn’t be somewhat independent. Mom may have to explain some for each lesson but then the child could take off from there if they understood. It’s too hard to say how independent bc children comprehend these things so uniquely. I hope that helps. I’ve never used BJU so I’m no help there. 😉

Hi! Would you be interested in doing a comparison video between IEW writing/ Fix-It Grammar, and Bravewriter grammar (Arrows etc.) and Faltering Ownership? I am struggling with what to choose next year for my upcoming sixth grader, and I would appreciate your feedback and recommendations. Thanks!
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Год назад
I understand! No, I won’t be doing a comparison of those curriculum. I haven’t even done much with Brave Writer this year to do a real video on it. The arrow guides only tackle SOME grammar elements. I definitely think IEW is more thorough. And Brave Writer is more creative and also is made for those not as worried about grammar. If you listen to Julie Bogart talk about this, she’s more into the heart behind the writing. She makes the point that you’ll never read a good book and say “wow, they use of hyphens and gerunds was phenomenal!” And she’s right. It’s the ideas behind the writing that’s her focus. Where IEW is more about the mechanical process. There is a place for both!

The vocab words will not be the same. And I don’t have the grammar cards personally. So think it just depends on if YOU want to drill them that way. @@DanaAnna626 that’s hard to answer bc everybody learns and grasps Things differently. I can say….FOR ME… I think the teachers manual on the themed units is pretty good. The TEACHING style and structure videos help explain all of it more. And you could absolutely watch those with your kids and then do the themed units. You don’t necessarily need to learn it on your own. You could learn it together. But also….the student style and structure really teaches the same thing. The audience is different. So it would be geared to the age level that you purchase but the topics are the same. You could absolutely learn (as a teacher) with your kids if you wanted to watch those with them. I feel like once you’ve been through IEW once, you may glean additional insights from doing another year of videos. IEW for high school: Would Level C be enough for a complete English credit? Are the included literature suggestions enough, or would you need to add in something else to fulfill a literature component? If so, what would be a good option to add in?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Год назад
What is needed for a credit is the hours. It’s not about necessarily what’s in it. 120 hours for a credit is 4 hours/week for 30 weeks. This is split into 24 weeks however once you get to the formal essay…..you can take longer for that. It can be a formal research paper. You can always add more of that’s what you think you need. So yea, this is enough. For the videos and the paper each lesson, 4 hours/week is spot on. That doesn’t even count if you were to add literature. I really don’t fully understand what colleges are actually looking for on a transcript besides just “language arts.” For my states public school grad requirements…it says 4 credits of LA with 1 of those credits being a formal writing program. It says nothing about literature. So I think the LA credits are what you decide is reasonable for a LA course. I’d say 6 books a year is WAY more than what public schools are doing. I hope that helps.

In your opinion, if the parent watches all the level B Structure & Style videos, is that enough to teach the full IEW process? I have levels A & B, but my ADHD kiddos can't tolerate watching the videos (even when I shortened them to 15min per day and sped them up). I'm debating whether to purchase Teaching Writing Structure & Style for myself so that I can teach the process to them (and eventually to my younger two kids), or just watch the Level B videos I already have as a guide to teaching them the process. Is it worth it to buy the Teacher course if you already own the student course?

I’m not sure because I’ve never watched the student videos with my kids. How many units does level B do? The teaching style and structure goes over 9 units. (The 9th is literary analysis) If I had to guess, I’d say if you watched and taught your kids, it would probably work fine. The teaching style and structure is going to be a very similar format. It’s just taking YOU as teacher through the process. And it probably gives more of the WHY to you as teacher. And since the audience is teachers, the humor is geared towards adults. While the students style and structure would be you “sitting in a kids classroom” and learning. Does that make sense?

They have different videos geared to that audience. However, the main concepts will be the same and just increase in complexity. That’s what i meant when I said it’s very classical. Would they learn new stuff each year/level? My brain feels like it’s about to explode here! 😂
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan Год назад
I think that’s the question of the day. I think it depends on how confident your child is to do this in their own. That’s the ultimate goal. So in classical conversations, when we did IEW there, the kids did different t themed units every year for grade 4-6. The hope is by 6th grade, they can do it all on their own. Obviously in 4th grade, Mom is helping A LOT! But some kids still can’t do the more complex units on their own by 6th grade. Research papers are difficult!! So some depends on that. And also I noticed that the upper level writing courses may teach a bit MORE. I’d have to look at the scope and sequence of level C year 2. But for example, I got my daughters a themed unit this year for grade 3-5 and it only goes over units 1-7, where level C for my son, goes through unit 9. I think your child could enjoy the repetition if they enjoy honing their writing skills. But if they are the creative type, the repetition might so redundant, you might want to mix it up with a different curriculum some year. I know that’s not much of an answer. You might reach out to IEW themselves and see what they recommend. Upper levels do have different courses. I know I’ve seen one titled, “the elegant essay” which is specific to research papers.

As a teacher? It just depends on how fast you do it. It doesn’t necessarily require you to assignments. But I’ll tell you how we used it in Classical Conversations. And then the other unit, if you simply watched the DVDs and took notes, you’d learn a ton. It’s too hard to say how long it would take you to complete if you used that as a base for your kids. You have 9 units. Technically, you could do 1 unit a week. But in the other writing programs, they have you do practice papers for each unit. So for unit 4, you might practice 3 different papers.
