Use a 5 gallon bucket, a toilet seat and plastic bags set inside of the 5 gallon bucket, put kitty litter or pine litter or even corn cob bits into that toilet and use it as your toilet adding a little litter after each use, can put tied bag into trash can or compost it somehow.
@peteric100
@peteric100 5 месяцев назад
Better yet, put the plastic bag in your toilet. Dip the water out first and plug the drain so that sewer gas doesn’t come into the house. Sitting on a five gallon bucket may cause it to tip over. Your toilet is the better option.

Just for urination.. You can use urinals like the hospitals do when you can't get out of bed. Then dispose of in yard, maybe on weeds! For the other hmm I think the plastic bags in the toilet where the water has been removed sounds more sturdier to me just my thought. But all ideas really good depending on your situation.

For chest freezers, placing 2 or 3 folded blankets on top of the freezer, covering the entire surface within a couple hours of the power going out can increase the time before things start to melt. We managed to keep the contents of our very full freezer frozen for 4.5 days without power during a September snowstorm in 2014. While it may not help with a major EMP, it can certainly help with shorter emergencies.

I had a certified plumber come out to our house yesterday to install a back flow valve in our sewage clean out pipe so that no sewage would enter our house if the situation got that bad. Since we live on a hill, he was honest and said that although he'd love to charge me $1,800.00 to install it, we really didn't need one. He said the houses at the bottom of the hill need one. He looked at our street and said the sewage will force the lid off the manhole cover and will flow downhill towards the houses down there. There really wasn't any way it would ever flow back into our house. I also asked him about the inflatable ball that can be inserted in the sewage clean out pipe and he said by the time you realize you need it, it will be too late and sewage will already be in your house. I absolutely loved this video and got so much useful information from it. THANK YOU!!!

With regards to getting home and/or evacuating - I have ordanance survey maps and a compass in my car. If the sat nav fails, I have a backup navigation method. I have also gone for drives to areas I have never been to, and then worked back home using the maps to practice. This is worth doing; as before I got the maps - I have gotten into situations where the roads I know have been unexpectedly closed and I have found myself diverted down back roads in the countryside with no GPS or phone signal at dusk with not much petrol in the tank. Horrible feeling being lost - do yourself a favour and don't let it happen to you.

I have a basic three step approach to determining if we have been hit with an EMP. 1. The lights go out unexpectedly: 2. Check your phone, If it's not working; 3. Check if your vehicles start. If they do not, there's a very good chance there was an EMP given all of these electrical/electronic devices have suddenly and simultaneously stopped working.

Most vehicles are safe from an EMP, most not all but most. If the electronic device you are relying upon has an LCD or a UI to be able to access modes and functionality you better make sure it is un a faraday cage. Small appliances like a CPAP machine are relatively safe because they do not have a UI to them or are still using analog switches. Things like a solar generator that have the digital display and are reliant upon a small processor to track voltage regulation and such are definitely not. Very good video. One more tip: I have written everything down that I need to think of when SHTF. And that is a lot! I wrote it down, not for myself, but for my future housemates (children, grandchildren). When I take them in, they have to be thorougly instructed and trained. Without documentation, you do not know where to start and you forget things. Moreover, it is too much to take in at once.

Have had advice to keep a GO bag in your car -water, head lamp, granola bars, reflective blanket, lighter/matches, jacket and hat, extra pair of socks, etc... be aware of where you are and know how to get home.... Our first 6 years in our home we had no water or power, so we have been there - a creek flows along one side of our land and I have bought an easy, cheap water system and filters - look for a guy who goes by 'goneagain' on RU-vid and he will show you that. You may also need something to save rain water in. If you have meat in the freezer, start smoking it! And if you can before any of this - gather together a community - find different strengths within that community and help each other!

@diypreppertv
@diypreppertv 7 месяцев назад
It’s possible, but would probably depend on several factors. A worst case scenario would be a house right under the EMP with bad wiring inside the house and poorly maintained utility equipment outside. If it’s dry outside, that wouldn’t help either of sparks start dropping from lines or transformers onto dead grass.

If you are stuck in a city or suburb, depending on the situation that caused the EMP, follow the 12/24 rule. Take 12 hours to gather up necessary resources and be gone from that area by the 24 hour mark. The first 12 hours will be your best chance to get around and stock up on supplies as most people will be scratching thier heads trying to "figure out" what's happened. Around hour 12 is when some will start to get wise and start to the situation, but will remain hopeful that the power is still going to be restored. Things will start to degrade and by the 24 hour mark people will go into full panic mode. The second the grid goes down, law and order will be a thing of the past, but it will take a little while for the average Joe to figure that out.. it's best to be as far away from a populated area as you can before they do.
@cherylmockotr
@cherylmockotr Месяц назад
12/24 is a good rule, but there won't be any way to travel anywhere except by bicycle or on foot... unless you're one of the very rare people who own an operational pre-80's vehicle that happens to have a full gas tank.

#1 Did you or anyone around you see a bright white flash in the sky? This indicates a high probability of a nuclear explosion which will have an EMP effect. You can gauge distance and necessary action somewhat by instant effects. The range at which you will get temporary blindness is a little bigger than the range where you will get 1st degree burns. This will all be instant. For 1 megaton airburst in the day that is about 13 miles & 10 miles respectively. If you got 1st degree burns you are in an area which will break windows from the blast wave when it comes. If you get blister burns you are AT LEAST close enough that the blast wave will destroy residential structures and perhaps other buildings. The thermal radiation gets there almost instantly but does not end instantly. It may persist up to around 20 seconds. At that 10 mile range, the air blast will arrive about 49 seconds after the flash, which may only give you 15 to 20 seconds after the burn. Not much time from the disorientation of the flash and the significant pain. If you are closer the pain will be greater and the time will be less. If you can keep your wits about you, you can do a rapid determination on the burn extent, and your surroundings. From that, determine if you can get to a place safer from the blast wave in the 7 to 30 seconds you may have before it arrives. Breaking glass, flying debris, and structural strength are all important. The wave is directional, so if necessary you can just ensure something very strong is between you and the blast. #2 Have multiple disconnected (battery operated) electronic devices stopped working? Whether devices stop working or not depends on the amount of metal or shielding around them and the strength of the EMP. A very distant blast may leave most things working. A strong close blast may kill everything. Cars usually have metal around components and may survive weaker/distant EMP. Cell phones are small and poor receivers and may or may not die depending on EMP strength. If no flashes have been seen, and there are no civil warnings, it MAY be a naturally occurring EMP with no nuclear effect to follow. Stay sharp looking for signs. It is probably best to take cover for next few minutes just in case. #3 If there was a blast wave, note the direction that things fell, and look for shelter in the opposite direction, i.e. further from the blast. You want to find shelter in 5 minutes or less. Shelter in something underground and/or with dense thick walls. Shower without soap to wash off any radioactive particles. Be sure to wipe around the eyes, ears and any places particles may tend to accumulate. Remove contaminated clothing to a plastic bag and place it away from you. Radiation levels drop drastically in the 48 hours. Stay sheltered during this time, and preferably much longer. After 72 hours and in the first two weeks make only short forays out of shelter if necessary.

It should be said (I missed it if it was) no one really knows what an EMP will do to everything, of course the grid or parts of it will likely go down, but there is no telling what it will do to modern cell phones, cars, generators and other medium to small electronics like fridges. For all we know they will be completely unharmed, or everything with the simplest circuit board could be fried, we just don't know for sure. But these are some good steps regardless.

Currently our star would be a likely source for an emp type event. 2nd would be an attack. Keep abreast of situation in Middle East and Ukraine. Things can go hot in an instant.

EMP from the sun is one thing. Living a couple miles from a (nuke base) primary target is another. If it's a nuke related EMP the only thing to be concerned with is my salvation. Sun related is more like "Would you like fried electronics with that?"

Aluminum foil on your windows will block out light. Mylar blankets are durable and useful.

Wouldn’t an EMP affect your vehicle? So you couldn’t bug out via car.

There are items available to harden your vehicle against a emp. Course won't know if it works until...

I’d think *if it knocked out cars, the roads would be blocked with cars that quit. Just a thought.

Biggest immediate question is how would you know if you were experiencing a regular power outage or an EMP farther away than what would immediately effect your personal items but does shut down the country? If all coms go down you wouldn't know if it's a service problem or ww3

Very good question. I live in an apartment complex several miles from a family member that lives in a house. I am not sure when I would need to take my dog and make my way to their house and abandon my place and prep stuff.

If it's an EMP, the power bounces from above AND below. It's a double whammy.

With the weakening magnetic field, a solar emp is definitely going to happen,…. Expect to be essentially back in the pre-industrial days, no electronics will work, no cars, no lights, no refrigerators, nothing

Get a reverse osmosis water filter now, it filters out everything including fluoride (the worst chemical), then fill up all bottles that you use, like soda, juice, and other used bottles. Store hundreds of these bottles.

Watch for bottles leaking. I had been using a gallon jug that held distilled water originally in it. The seam cracked and started a slow leak that spread across my kitchen.

Keep batteries in an airtight metal tin (tight fitting lid). I have ours sorted by size, each in a different tin.

@@melanieoliver3294 I've never had batteries rust in the tin. But I keep them in their original packaging - inside the airtight tin.

I have some of the nuns hats that we use in hospitals to collect patient urine and bm. It fits underneath the seat. I can then dump the waste into a bucket and take outside. I also have a portable bedside commode that forlds flat for storage.

If you decide to store freeze dried foods, know that you will need a lot of water to rehydrate them.
