What an interesting camera! What do you think? 📷
@photoplanet

Why are we still enslaved to the mental concept of 'Full-Frame'? Most people taking up the hobby these days with digital kit may never have used film, and so won't actually know where the history of 'full-frame' came from (36x24mm 35mm film frame). And lenses.... We have for example, a 12mm lens, and then have to 'convert' it to a 35mm equivalent focal length which will vary, depending on the format it's used on.

I think that Sony A7C, A7CII and A7CR is the most compact Cameras for what you get, the Sigma fp and fpL without an EVF is only a tiny bit smaller than the Sony Cameras which have EVF, for the Sony system there is so many Lenses to choose from and play with that it is a joy.

Hi Emily, I really enjoyed your video. This camera is a real contender for me, as is the Sony A7c and Fujifilm xe4, and the high, second-hand prices for these cameras bear testament to the interest in small, rangefinder-style cameras. If the FPL had a hotshoe and an EVF that matched is size, maybe in the same wat that Leica does it, I'd be in.

I love this camera just for the sheer engineering feat of getting all of that camera into such a tiny box. It reminds me of when manufacturers had fun and creative with their camera designs. If I had the cash I would definitely get one!

I owned one for a while. Traded it in because despite it's compact design, great buttons and the menu. The EVF cost £600. If just shooting primes fine. Sigma do a great series of compact quality primes. But the telephoto is large and comparatively heavy. So the weight of the telephoto lenses, lack of built-in EVF, no articulating screen and no IBIS were the key reasons for me parting with it. I went back to Olympus and haven't regretted my decision for one moment.

I agree MFT needs both a G9mk2 or OM1 and a small camera like GX9 OM10 First one being in good Balance with telel enses like PL 200mm2.8 the 100-400 etc... The camera bodies aren't that small but the lenses are.... Especially compared to the HUGH and expensive Full Frame lenses (Agree there are Compromises but that is with every system) Latter for being small and conspicuous essy to sneak in a small bag with some primes.... So no offence (not meant personally) but in politics there's a saying: "It's the economy stupid!" In the camera world one could say: "It's all about the lense (size) stupid!"😉 So to answer the question: YES we do still need crop sensor cameras 🤗📷

A cropped image doesn't give you the perspective you would have with the equivalent focal lenght lens. Example if a 50mm lens once cropped give you a 100mm ....well it doesn't give you the perspective of a 100mm lens, which is the purpose to use one in the first place. Crop is fashion at the moment but the real meaning is "reframe". I know, even Leica sell the idea with its new Q3 but it is a lie or a scam, pick your choice. I mention this because I am quite sick to see that everywhere now, but also because the rest of your video is well done and I appreciate it.
@sumgi1888
@sumgi1888 8 месяцев назад
Came here to say exactly this, cropping absolutely does not equal the same thing as changing focal length and nothing you can do to it in software can change that.
@miklosnemeth8566
@miklosnemeth8566 15 дней назад
Exactly, you buy a 61M camera and degrade it to an APSC or 1” camera with cropping. Noise performance and DoF degrades along with cropping. For image quality megapixels are not as significant as the total amount of light captured for a photo, cropped or uncropped.

Niiice! I have the original fp (24 megapixels) and love it for adapting vintage lenses. Both fp and fp L have an INCREDIBLE feature for correcting any color distortion from adapted glass, which can happen on a digital camera especially with old super-wide lenses and especially especially with old super-wide rangefinder lenses since rangefinders also lack mirrors and the lenses sit closer to the sensor which is what causes color casts. What you do with the fp is take a photo of an all white wall or something and then save it to the settings and then apply it to your current lens… and the fp will output corrected RAWS! No other camera does this. It totally takes away color casting from my antique Russar 20mm LTM lens. The fp also has great features for manual focusing, focus peaking and an excellent punch in zoom. And the sensor is delicious. (I’m sure the 61mp one is also great but I don’t need it!) BTW Sigma sells a tiny grip for the fp that is transformative. It doesn’t make it any bigger.

I pair mine with the ef 28mm f2.8 is. I have the fp and use crop mode for video, and full frame for photo. i also have the adapted swivel screen from dark power labs. The ONLY issue left for me is the elctronic shutter and banding in photo mode. just requires a bit more thought. But the cdng files out of this are plain beautiful. Thank you for such a positive review. So much negativity about this camera that it ignores all the good bits.

Another great video! I just bought the Sony A7Cii, so that will be my small full frame camera. Right now I just have the kit Sony zoom (28-60) and the Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary Lens, which makes for a nice compact kit. My other camera kit is the Pen F digital with the Oly 17mm and 12-40mm Pro zoom. That's all I have now. I sold everything else to downsize and so far these 2 kits are working well for me as travel kits. The Sony is not as high resolution as the Sigma, but so far I'm loving it. Glad you enjoy your Sigma camera!

While the design/ergonomics don't look like they'll win any awards, the size of this thing makes it very interesting to me as I appreciate manufacturers putting time into making bodies compact for the sensor size, so definitely on my list this now! Also, great shots of my home town Liverpool, hope you enjoyed it :)

@gordon3988 9 месяцев назад
Nice overview! I’ve often thought the same…another example is the original A7C at roughly 500 grams, small, weather sealed and if you buy small full frame lenses you can stay around the same as MFT; that changes once you start looking at med zooms and above. Not great IBIS though. So maybe not the best choice for weight and size if birding is your thing. And if you stay with a crop; Sony APSC can pretty much meet or beat many new MFT for size and weight at the shorter end. Stabilization not quite as good however and not quite as weatherproof perhaps. I would love for MFT to produce some more small bodies…I would say OM5 size max or smaller.

Just a note about the crop “genuinely not losing quality”, you are effectively using a smaller sensor when cropping, and smaller sensors, by definition, don’t have the same performance (noise ratio, definition). But you also are using the center part of the lens which is the sharpest part, that counter acts the loss. I know I am nitpicking but it took me a while to understand this. And as you say, it will still give a perfectly good image, the main downside being loss of resolution. Great video it made me reconsider the sigma bodies.

It’s interesting but I mainly use my 100-400mm lens on my OM-1. I don’t want to carry around an 800mm full frame zoom lens ever. And I’d also want the EVF so that takes away from the compactness as well. Would be cool to see something like the Sony RX100 in MFT. With the popup EVF and 200mm equivalent zoom range.

It’s not my only camera, but I do use it quite often for stills with Leica and Voigtlander glass. I have the EVF and use it about half the time mostly for model shots where focus is desired. If I want to point-and-shoot it, I tend to go for my Leica SL 16-35 with auto-focus or my Voigtlander 10mm and set it to f/8 and then everything is in focus. I’ve gotten some wicked results from the fp. It’s easy enough to shoot with a small M lens or a 90-280 or even a 120 tilt-shift lens. It’s a nice camera to pack away in a bag with another camera like when I don’t want to change lenses or where I’m also shooting film. Despite its limitations with the lack of a shutter, the camera is very capable with a beautiful output. Lastly, it’s diminutive size is great for not being noticed.

I started with Lumix LX3, graduated to a GF1, and then upgraded to a OMD-ME5, to end with GH5. Best pictures taken with the LX3 and the GF1. The OMD and I never clicked. The GH5 has never taken a single picture due to circumstances (corona, illnesses, and dad that needed caring for). The best loved camera was the GF1. Even Thomas Struth lent me his Leica S2 in order to check out my GF1 when we met at his show in Dusseldorf, artist in attendance, including high-end stereo system he brought from home.

How do you you eliminate rolling shutter in photography with the fpL? Do you set the shutter to a minimum of 1/125s? A Sigma 28/2.0 DG DN i-series is missing. Then it would be a very good alternative to the Leica Q3 (5.900€).

I'm a bigger guy and find something like the OM-1, G9, or OM-5 small enough. Since I like a bigger grip and use longer lenses mostly, I like the balance still more than if I had a small FF body and their long lenses. Even the pro and PL super telephoto lenses aren't bigger than the biggest pro FF lenses (most importantly, they're still more in reach price wise). But I definitely understand for people in other genres the demand for smaller bodies. I think they will come if you have small lenses like the PL 9mm or OM 20 1.4 pro still coming out.

You CAN get a smaller set up, it would be the Light Lens Lab 35mm f2 collapsible lens which protrudes about a centimeter with a M Mount adapter. Only caveat is that the collapsing mechanism necessitates that you need to use 2 hands sometimes to change aperature. Also, yes the EVF is 600 quid but you can mount an LCD loupe (mine's collapsible - you're sensing a theme here...) onto a detachable 3d printed bracket for around £20. I sometime think about selling my FPL and moving on because of the rolling shutter. I can live without IBIS, the 1/15th second flash sync (you forgot to mention) and the ocassional banding issues but the rolling shutter is a killer, especialy if you use the crop modes and telephoto lenses. But then again, I can't think of another camera I would rather switch to which would be as much fun. Small tip, get the official grip, well built and gives a lot of additional, well, grip. Without adding much to the overall form factor

Interesting video pleased you liked the camera as I value your opinion and it is a camera I am interested in. I am obsessed with Sigma's Foveon sensored cameras and have a few DP and SD models. Sigma do a good SA to L mount adapter so I would be able to use my more modern SA lenses on it. The menu system on the FP is similar to that on the Quattro cameras as well. I live in hope that the much rumoured full frame Foveon camera will arrive in an FP body.

Thanks for the review. It is an interesting concept - the core of a still/video camera to which you can add various attachments. However, when you start adding those attachments (like a viewfinder), the camera becomes heavier, bulkier, and pricier. A fairer comparison would be to add on the bits and bobs to the Sigma to give it the same capabilities as the camera you are comparing it to. Sigma makes great lenses and they have been quite innovative and unconventional with their cameras. Its great that they are sticking with it and improving on their original fp camera. However, adding a massive full frame lens to this tiny body creates something that is quite unweildy. You had to carefully pick and choose to find a lens with a size that was in keeping with the compact body.

In long form, the internal audio drifts and becomes out of sync on 23.98 fps after about 15 min or so and I normally don't care about jello (no mechanical shutter) but the readout is just kinda bad. for L-mount cameras, the S5 series seems so much better for the money.

This camera is probably the most attractive beast I've seen, however, the reasonable quality auto-focus detroys its video prospects alone (for me / manual focus guys should be fine), but also it's lack of V-Log means it's not compatible with other L Mount video sessions as this creates more post production work (the enemy of Videography). I am truly amazed by its strategy of crop mode and how this maintains the quality of the system, my only concern is that this would bring one into the realm of more expensive glass over time...($$$$). I think Ill stick to my MFT system as travel with 1 camera, 4 small prime lenses is still very good (9mm, 15mm, 42.5mm f1.7, 75mm). Once there is an update with mechanical shutter, and V-Log I may well jump ship...

I love Sigma cameras - I just prefer the DP line with Foveon sensors. Those cameras are all together different beasts with many limitations, but when you get it right, it's unlike anything else. If money were no option, and I wanted a compact full frame camera, I'd go for a Leica M-mount (for stills) or a Sony A7C II (for stills and video). They are not as tiny as the FP-L, but they are really good cameras with at least as much to offer as the FP-L if not more.

Here's a tip; get the MC21 EF adaptor then a canon 40mm pancake 2.8. Comes with image stab and great image!

I considered the FP-L along with Sigma's small, but good "contemporary" lenses for landscape photography, but having no EVF and no IS are both show stoppers to me. I love my GX 800, but for these reasons I almost always pick one of the OM-Ds.

what do you mean with "unlike fuji, it also gives you the raw file"? Fuji allows you to get a Jpeg and raw with film simulation available on the raw.

I was referring to my findings in a previous video inshould have been clearer. Specifically for recipe/photo profile bracketing. On fuji if you choose the bracketing option you'll get 3 different jpeg recipes but no raw file. On this sigma you get 5 different style jpegs and the raw file as well.

I meant in the recipe bracketing mode. I should have explained it clearer. The bracketing mode gives you a selection of filtered jpegs and no raw file on Fuji, whereas on this sigma you get the jpegs plus the raw file

Yes, we do. Sensor size has implications on many things with most important to me being the size of the lenses and the depth of field. Yes depth is more often important than shallowness and that explains why phones very often give more acceptable close-ups/macro than large sensors and why smaller sensors can show same or less noise by using a larger aperture whilst achieving same depth of field. It seems that the only undisputed advantage is the dynamic range, provided the two sensor compared have same pixel count. The larger will always win. (simplified, but even that is not a linear function, there is actually an optimum pixel size, beyond which the law of diminishing returns kicks in.)

That sensor is 1/10 as lovely as you are. I started with it and the Sigma 35mm f2 but quickly moved on to ENORMOUS but sharp lenses like 40mm 1.4 and zeiss Otus 85mm 1.4. Absolutely bonkers I know!

This is my main camera - and I’ve had Sony and Leica. Yeah, the big killer is you really need the EVF and it is ridiculously expensive. I sucked it up and bought one. Actually most of the Sigma primes are superb, small and light. I just came home from France and used my Leica 35mm f2 (small snd light) plus the Sigma 90mm f2. Beautiful images. In May I was in France and just took a tiny and light Voigtlander 40mm prime. It’s actually my main video camera and whips most other systems ass in that regard.

I really rate the sigma primes, I obviously love that they're tiny, but the image quality is superb as well! I remember getting a free one with my original s5 purchase ages ago as an early adopter offer and it really blew me away. Was so nice to try the full set again with this review

@@MicroFourNerds Your video was very balanced and fair. Yes, the electronic shutter is the other big negative. I shot a live band and there pictures from the soundcheck were superb, but all the shots from the show (LED lighting) were heavily banded and unusable. For daytime photography the FP is superb however.

Interesting review ! The non inclinable screen is a definite NO for me because I know I need it and was the main reason I left Canon when I had a 7D to switch to Sony . It's not so difficult to implement so I see this a Sigma mistake...Maybe they will consider a it for the next version ?

I think it's great that Sigma pursue their own path in camera design, rather than following the herd, but the downside is that this is a very niche product. If you happen to live in that niche (like Mike Johnston) or can afford the Sigma as a second or third camera, great. For most of us though, there are more appropriate choices for a small camera. I do think that we are lucky to have so many amazing camera options these days and this Sigma definitely brings something unique to the party.

Curious camera from Sigma, but a bit pricey especially as I'm not already using L lens. The lack of IBIS is a pain, but could be worked around if you can afford the camera.

nice video and it looks lovely. question - you mention that fuji doesn't give you the raw - what do you mean? I shoot an XT2 (old i know) and i shoot in a film simulation with a jpeg and a raw. I can then use the jpeg immediately and if i didnt get things right, i have the raw to work on. Did you mean something else and i misunderstood? Keep making videos!
@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 9 месяцев назад
I mean in the bracketing mode specifically. On the XF10 there's a bracketing mode very much like the one on this sigma where it'll take 3 jpegs with different recipes, but it doesn't give you the raw file in that mode. The sigma comparitively gives you 5 different jpegs plus the original raw file

@@MicroFourNerds - yeah, That makes sense. i have an XF10 and it is both great and annoying in equal measures. So close to being perfect but not quite there...... still, paid pennies for it 2 years ago and love the pics i get when the stars align. much lower hit rate than the XT2

interesting tech - not so fun for strobe shooters though....would be interested if that were dealt with. With a maximum sync speed for flash of 1/30 second, and if you choose the 14-bit raw mode, max sync speed drops down to 1/15 second - you better have some powerful LEDs for portrait work.

Just something delicious about its ambition. Tiny but HUUUGE!. I want one just so they keep doing it. I have found IBIS (especially on the latest Canons) to be more of pain when shooting video than a help and have seen cinematographers turning it off in the R5c. So Sigma might be playing the long game here. Yes I want one. Huge files, I say yum.

In the 'lens off' views, the sensor appears quite close to the lens throat... I know it's mirrorless and all that, but in a film camera, the distance between focal point and film was much greater, leading to a less acute angle of light striking the film, and better use of the image circle...
@MSUTri
@MSUTri 5 месяцев назад
The reduced mount flange distance on L mount only gives flexibility in lens design - it doesn't mandate a higher ray angle or closer lens elements. Many old film non-retrofocus wideangle lenses have rear lens elements that stick inwards past the mount flange, almost touching the film in some cases. In fact, film is much less sensitive to high ray angles, so those older non-retrofocus wideangle lenses don't always perform as well in the corners on digital sensors as they did on film. The stack height of the sensor and the microlenses on it have an impact on how well the lenses work. Modern lenses designed for use on digital take the ray angle issue into account in their designs, and minimize the problem. The short flange to sensor distance gives a number of benefits. It leaves more room on native lenses for the focus motor, aperture mechanism, and all the other things that need to be packed in there. And it also allows for nearly any legacy lens mount to be adapted and allow for infinity focus. Leica M mount and M39 LTM thread mount, Contax/Nikon rangefinder bayonet mount, M42 and T thread mounts, Pentax K mount, Nikon F mount, Canon FD Mount, and others can all be easily adapted with more or less full functionality other than auto diaphragm stop down on shutter trigger. Even Contax G lenses can be made useable with an adapter that allows for diaphragm control. That's where the short flange distance really comes in handy. It also helps keep the body size down. All the space behind the sensor is needed for the image sensor circuitry, heat dissipation, etc. that wasn't needed on film cameras. So that can only be reduced so much. But with no mirror on the front of the sensor, the flange can be made very close.

It’s not the bodies that make folks move away from full frame, it’s the insane size of the fast lenses and you can’t escape that. It’s just a function of physics. M43, APSC and compact full frames like the Leica Q3 will always have appeal for that reason.

To be fair, it looks like the ultimate replacement for X-T3 A7C/A7CII for low budget and medium production videography. Put it in a cage, get a nice T-stop prime from Meike or Soviet lenses photo and video cameras like rehoused Vega, Helios, Mir or even Industar-61 LZ, add a handle and a microphone - and you have a BEAST of a setup to film on the go. The only thing Sigma lacks is some proper software to connect in to your smartphone so you don’t need a mirror/another monitor to look at yourself. Gonna recommend it to my friends with older versions Blackmagic

IMO a better argument might be is if m4/3 is still needed (yes IMO), since many of the m4/3 bodies released today cost as much (or more) and are as big (if not bigger) than some of the APSC cameras.

It’s not about the camera size but the lens size which can’t change due the the laws of physics.For example I use the Olympus 150-400mm which at 1000mm equivalent at f5.6 is about as big and heavy as a pro FF 70-200mm. Camera size is easy- my hand size determines the camera size that suits me.

if you need longer reach, crop sensor is the best way to do it (compact lens size). if you can stand using larger lenses for wider aperture lens (f/1.4), no need using crop sensor body.
