Awesome video. I love bringing something back to life. I have an old cub lowboy 184 that needs an engine rebuild and lots of seals. Its something that ive been putting off for a couple years but I am excited for when the funds come to do the rebuild.
Thank you so much! It's really true. Money is one thing, but also the time it takes. That's why my brother couldn't get to it. I'm so happy to be able to help get her running 🤠👍
Wish I had a brother. 😃 Nice work Sam. The overdue maintenance isn't a big deal. That mice damage was a real concern but fortunately it worked out too.
You said it! Putting those wires back together was tedious. I'm not a mechanic so it was a challenge but I just kept focused on one task at a time and got it done. Feels really good 🤠👍
@samsdoinstuff Zip tape sticky side up, or scrap ice and water shield. Little peanut butter in the middle. I can't tell you how many mice I have caught with sticky traps. I've got a nice 10/22, but the .22 air rifles are where it's at. No shell casings everywhere!
@dand33911 That's a great idea with the sticky traps. I use spring traps in my barns... and cats love to hunt in there too. I've been wanting a nicer pellet rifle. I have an old Crossman.
A little tip from someone who found out the hard way..... If You had rotated the machine so that the cab end faced the blade, You would have had much more room to work on the blade hose. Also applies to greasing the blade pins. Good job.
Nice job Sam on repairing and servicing the mini x. That will be soooo handy to have around the property. I think both you and your brother are benefiting from this arrangement. 👍
As a small excavator owner power wash that excavator it will help with maintenance and spotting leaks etc. Look it over before every use and the clean machine makes it easier. You will be amazed how much quicker projects will be completed. It's a win win for you and your brother.
Thank you so much! I was hoping someone with experience would give me some advice. She's operational and I do intend to go over her with a more critical eye. At least she's in a barn and not in a field! 🤠👍
That is fantastic. I just fixed a free John Deere LX155 riding mower, obviously not the same scale but it's such a good feeling. That is a fantastic size excavator, one day I'll get me one of those.
That's a good deal Sam! Didn't see any leaking on the new hose. Well that's the first time I've seen someone add oil from a ladder, hard to get to spot using some creative thinking. A little bit of a difference between the color of the new and old air filter. Good job on the maintenance. No problem to rip out that wire. Looking forward to seeing more with the excavator?
Thank you Paul! I'm truly amazed at how well everything went to get her up to good working order. There will absolutely be lots to do with her around the property 🤠👍
New to your channel. Nice video. Don't forget to write the hours and date on the new filters so you know when to do the next maintenance. It's easy to forget.
Well that is awesome. You’ll be digging drainage ditches for days now Sam! Man I’d say that oil drain plug was way too tight. All fluids changed and your in business. Enjoy the new toy Sam! Cheers, Mike.
Thank you Mike! Why do people over tighten stuff like that?!? She's running like a champ. Just some minor repairs to do on rainy days, but I'll be getting some BIG stuff done when it's dry 🤠👍
cool that your brother did this...I have never been able to work out how oil filters do that, I put them on hand tight, come back a year later and it needs a crowbar and 600lbs of torque to get the damn things off...I hate doing them, to the point where I often have to punch a hole right through and twist them off with a bar ...if some one makes a none self tightening oil filter I am right there ..I'll have atleast three As for fule filters I had to develop a whole new way of dealing with mine since I run biodiesel in my landrovers but yeah bleeding injectors after a fuel filter change is second nature to me now, I actually keep a spanner in each vehicle just for if I get an airlock or run out of fuel. I hope youre cashing all your scrap steel in theres a few bucks worth right there.
Thank you! Maintenance isn't easy... none of it. Well, maybe the air filters 😅 I give all my scrap metal to my younger brother. I'm just happy to get rid of it. We do for each other, obviously. Good to have good family 🤠👍
You were having entirely too much fun during every bit of this video, even during the maintenance work. Nice job getting it up and running. And hey,,,,,,, Have fun
So you “don’t” get to have it, you get to use it. Better title would have been that; “If I can fix it, my brother will let me use it anytime I want”. Beyond that, good deal for both of you, depending on your future use and availability. Ok, now I understand, it’s your brother making the deal, family discount 😎. Good video sir, thank you.
That's a nice small machine! But the engine compartment seems to be very tight.. Some general hints: If filling in new oil to the travel reduction gears: First leave the drain plug open and fill in some new oil to flush out the rest of the old oil / dirt. Then close the drain plug and fill in the new oil. After some hours of usage, check the oil again. If it is clear, than all fine. If not, the seal around the gear box could be damaged and dirt comes inside of it. From time to time, open the water separator in the fuel line. Clean it. I have never seen water inside of it in my excavator. But sometimes there could be dirt inside which blocks fuel line. Check the rollers / idler wheel etc. of undercarriage: Lift machine up with the blade and bucked. Try to move the rollers / idler to the sides: There should be no play / only minimum of play of them. Then it is also easy to check the chain tension. If needed, tight it more. The bolts on the arm etc. should have no play. And they should not move towards the fixed parts. Otherwise the steel on the arm will be damaged over the time. This can be an expensive repair. Over the time, it is a good idea to remove one bolt after each other. Check the diameter of bolt and of the hole. Clean bolts. Check the grease fittings, if needed replace them. This is an easy and very helpful job for a good lifetime of the machine.
Make sure you change the gear oil in both final drives. It’s very easy, there’s three screw caps in it. Line them up, take the top out, then the bottom. When you fill it up turn it 15 degrees and leave the top off, screw in the bottom and fill from the top. When it comes out the middle it’s full. This will save you in the long term
Really awesome! So, change the channel to "Sam's Accomplishing Stuff"? I liked the homemade "oil bong". A tip for an oil change, when the oil pan bolt is a couple threads from coming out, put one of those magnetic pick up tools on it. You can turn the last few threads with that and it keeps your hands clear of the oil stream.
Not trying to be one of those nitpickers, and im definitely not an equipment operator. I was always told to utilize the bucket as a point of contact on the trailer, when using that type of ramp. If a ramp slips, or breaks,..you can lower yourself easily, instead of having the machine slam to the ground. I will add that this can kind of go wrong. We were doing a pipe job in Arkansas, and had the hinges on a loading gate fail (my buddy was in welding school, and welded them himself 😂. Anyway, our trailer jad seen some heavy use, and the bucket went through the decking. It did slow the fall, though. No damge to the machine, wich is good because ot was a rental. It did jave the skinny bucket, and the thumb was retracted all of the way. Im not sure if the thumb would have helped, or just gotten broken. Anyway, cool video, and thats good to have good family.
Thank you very much for the concern and the advice. I agree. Whenever possible, keep the bucket downhill. With that trailer, I cannot spin the cab around after loading and if I back it in, there will be way too much tongue weight. So we loaded with the bucket first. It's a bit risky but the slope isn't enough to send the machine over. It would be quite a bump though. Thanks again! 🤠👍
Remember when greasing the turret grease fitting, turn your excavator 90 deg then grease turn 90 deg then grease, four time this way the turret is greased all around and not just at one spot. Also engine all must be diesel oil not regular oil. Diesel engine oil has special additives for diesel engine. Hydrolic oil must be changes every 1100hr or manufacture specification or your going to scrap the pump. The hydraulic oil filter change intervals is about 250 hrs or so . As for the gear oil in the final drives change it every engine oil change. The cost is minimal compared to the cost of that final drive. They work hard so the oil will lose its lubrication properties fast. Air filter= the inner primary must always be like new. If not change both because this will indicate the main is perced. Prestone has a limited life and must be changed also, to keep the radiator and engine bloc from clogging.
FYI if you turn the house (cab) sometimes you gain more access to certain under carriage components. Also don’t open the oil fill cap until the drain plug is removed. You want the oil to come out slow while removing the drain plug. Pig mats are your friends during hydraulic, fuel, and coolant repairs. Use rubber hose plugs and pig mats when replacing hydraulic hoses. You replaced the whole fuel filter housing instead of just the filter element.
Good deal ! Fix it, use it. Smart brother too. You fix & he can still use it. It was worth losing a little skin to have a machine like that around.I used those little excavators at work . They are handy but they do have limitations. 👍👍🍺🍺
Thank you!!! Yes, it's a great deal for both of us. Limitations...? I could pick the BX up and throw it with that thing, lol. Seriously though, you're absolutely right, and some of its limitations are because it's so BIG 🤠👍
There is a New Zealand based man whose you tube Chanel is under the name of Marty T. He resurrects abandoned machinery and brings them home for his own use. His neighbour had an abandoned excavator deep in his forest that he rescued. In another video he finds a TD9 bulldozer abandoned due to mechanical issues.
Little bit of advice, the 3 grease fittings below the cab, one is for the turn table(what the cab rotates on) DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT over grease the turn table. If you blow that o ring out you’ll have to split it and replace that oring. I forget the kubota spec but I always did 3-5 pumps
That's always a good deal... if you can get it running. It's like I have a free rental for as long as I need it! I'm really thankful for our arrangement 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff I did not know how to fix that truck, but my friends did. They taught me how to change the ring gear and I bought them dinner. Never have had another bad ring gear, though.
Good day. I'm happy you got this machine running! I'd love to have one for my use. You are very fortunate. I'm wondering why you had to change the bracket for a spin-off filter? The old filter WAS a spin-off...right?
They are good machines I have the same one no cab 6000 hours on it I have put 6 tracks on it and the turn table motor seal was leaking and put new computer box that was 800 only reason it went bad was from getting wet
Nice job. I have a similar situation, although I purchased mine and it needs some TLC. How many hours did your machine have on it before you brought it back to life?
Pretty sure you can fill these motors with oil through a cap on the injector pump. Might be a little more accessible than going through the valve cover next time lol.
Just to be clear, it belongs to my brother. I fixed so I can have it for whatever I need, but it still belongs to him. The rental fees would be thousands though 🤠👍
I have an all out war on mice. They got into the belt drive compartment through the cooling outlet port on my Kioti UTV. The nest was so packed around the variable speed pulleys that both were frozen in place from all the corrosive mouse piss. I spent hours cleaning and freeing up the pulleys. The reason mice chew threw wires is because the EPA forced auto and equipment manufacturers to use soy products in the insulation and interior material.
I heard that about the wire insulation. Stupidity abounds. What a mess with your UTV. I guess I got off easy. At the very least, I'm glad I could get to the damage easily 🤠👍
Wow! Remember, I don't get to keep it forever. Yes, renting one would cost me a fortune too! My brother paid $30k for that one. It has 4,000 hours on it. It looks a but rough but she's running like a top now. Make sure you watch Saturday to see what I've done with it! 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff I was working on a project the other day and spilled a couple three drops of red Loctite on the floor. The other half came out in the shop and seen it. First thing that came out of her mouth was, where did you cut yourself this time?
You're lucky the rodents chewed the wires where they did, I have a newer KX 033 model. The mice got the wires under the seat where the fuse box is located, a real difficult location to access. I had neglected to do my usual storage procedure, which is to leave all doors open, including engine/ hydraulic and to put moth balls in all confined spaces. Rodents may visit, but don't want to spend any time making nests or chewing on wires.
That was left in the barn. I've found a couple of old tools while cleaning up the property. I love thinking about an old farmer using those things so many years before me. 🤠👍
Just a little peice of advice, use the boom and bucket when you are walking that off of those ties. Watch some videos and you'll understand what i mean, makes it much more comfortable and easier on the machine too
Very important rule for any track hoe is when loading or unloading ALWAYS BUCKET FIRST!!!!! If you can't rotate machine on the trailer then load it with bucket to the rear. Also hauling on a trailer always put the bucket to the rear and chain it down. Most states have a 5 point securement law. 2 points on front, 2 points on the rear and one on the bucket or boom. If hauling a backhoe there will be a extra ancor for the front loader. Most machines have a rotation lock. The D.O.T. will look for it and if it is not locked it could be a ticket along with any other infraction. I have hauled forestry equipment and every time I got pulled over for an inspection, the officer ask me to spread the securement rules. As for the rotation lock and chaining law was put in effect because of hydraulic equipment can leak and rotate and could cause damage. I like your channel and want to thank you for your content. Thank you God bless
Thank you so much for the advice. I am very thankful when those who know make comments like yours. Not only do I learn but those who read your comment will learn too 🤠👍
@@samsdoinstuff I call it safety money! Even though spending money for safety equipment, one accident without safety equipment could cost more than buying the reusable or not safety equipment. Which I call safety money well spent.
If you are going to come off blocks like that you should go off it forward and slowly use your bucket too gently set your machine on the ground. And there is way more room if you point the house in the direction of which you're working. Such as final drives or your hydraulic lines.
Hey sir, just a quick question you check the oil in your excavator and said it was full. Did you start it up and let it prime and fill the filter and then check it.
Well now I subscribe to your channel and I pushed the LIKE Button. I have not read the comment section yet probably won't but you need to go through and now that you have run the machine check all the fluid levels agand accept the Hubble should be still good. I always fill the oil filter with new oil And fill the fuel filter full of Especially the fuel as it will make it easier to start without as much bleeding I'm a sucker for this kind of RU-vid Video So thanks So Cl(:>)-[❤#=]
Thank you!! And welcome to the channel! I double checked the engine oil and the hydraulic fluid since I've been running it. All good there. I ran the fuel pump for a bit before starting it and she fired right up. No issues so far but I'll be keeping an eye on her as she goes. Getting tons of work done. Be sure to watch Saturday and see what I've done 🤠👍
Divine intervention, maybe. But how about a hat-tip to the Kubota engineers who did a good job making the thing? They make a pretty good product to begin with and two years is nothing. Two decades, now you're talking miracles.
Buy a can of Pblaster. Works far better than WD40. Add heat. Bolts just break loose. And being the oils were so black I would change them again in 10 hours.
I noticed when you was changing the fuel filter, you didn't change the other fuel filter in the clear bowl. That filter you will change more than the other one.
Whenever you are looking at a used ANYTHING which needs work. NEVER let on to the seller what you think the problem is, ESPECIALLY if it is an easy fix and NEVER whip out your leatherman or whatever & fix it on the spot. CASE IN POINT- 2 mechanics went to look at an old excavator a farmer had which had broken down & left parked where it broke some years earlier. The Guys looked it over & concluded they knew exactly what it need. They jumped in their truck and went to town and picked up some parts and fluids & returned and set to work. In a couple of hours they had it running so they drove it about & tested all the systems and were satisfied this was a good deal. So they told the farmer they would take it & the farmer says “ Well, boys, OK, but it going to cost you twice what I first asked” The guys were pissed. The farmer said “ That price was for an ex that did not run” The guys protested that they made it run & they paid for the parts. The farmer said “Don’t care. The ex is now a running machine & I want twice” The guys were pissed but had put over $500 into it. So they paid his price grumbling all the way and drove away with their new prize but not so good a deal. !
@@samsdoinstuff if you need to drain fuel tank behind little door left front corner of cab as well as fuel shut off.I have a 2003 kx 121-3 love the machine
@hl8256 oh! Now I see where you're coming from. That was the deal all along. It still belongs to my brother, but I'm storing it and taking care of it so it doesn't get trashed again. So in exchange for fixing it and taking care of it, I get to have it and use it as much as I need. Pretty good deal 🤠👍
Genuinely curious ...I appreciate the sentiment behind "If you can fix it you can have it", but if you can't fix it what's the owner then going to do with it ...just leave it unoperable in their field/yard/barn/shed for the next [insert number of years]? If they're prepared to give it to you if you can fix it why would they want to keep it if you couldn't, surely at that point they just want rid and would give it to you anyway. Right, back when I've watched the video... :)
@@samsdoinstuff Yes, I have a KX027-4 and servicing everything there is completely accessible and simple. Kubota just gets better and better over time👍
