There are coins in SMB 2. They are in subspace instead of the vegatables which you go into by picking up a potion in certain spots. The key in SMB you were missing is in one of the pots. To do a big jump in SMB2 hold down wait for mario to glow then jump.

in SMB2, the cherries are point sources, but the coins are there. In some bush you find a potion bottle, when you find it, throw it, you will notice that a door will appear, enter, you will find a mushroom, if you try to collect the bushes in the place (after entering through the door), you will collect a super mario bros 2 coin (which is an "old secret/top secret" in the game). MORAL: cherries are not coins P.S. - I have an nintendo switch LOL
whats funny is. the cherry isn't a coin in mario 2. the cherries (if collected enough) give a bonus heart to heal you up. coins are found in secret rooms from red door potions. so really you could go through the ENTIRE mario 2 game. and not collect a single "coin" EDIT: cherries. not cherry's

Actually, Super Mario 2 does have coins. You acquire by pulling a plant while inside the potion door area, and they are used for a slots minigame at the end of the level.
