Sam, thank you for posting this brief video for the noobs out here. I am in my mid 60's and the last time I played live was in 1978. When children begin arriving at the age of 20, you tend to pack your dreams back into the case and store them in a closet. I was in the right spot, stationed just north of LA on the PCH between Malibu and Carpentaria. Once discharged, I was in the right place, but it was the wrong time. I had no real life experience back then, I had NOTHING to say and that was probably the main reason I walked away. There was NO INTERNET, you had to walk out your front door and dig up a place to play if you wanted to get anywhere. Wolves on every corner waiting for you to walk by and give you an opportunity, 'under' their control. It was the only way. But times have changed and guess what? I have something to say now. It is NEVER too late, thank you for giving me a jumping-off place because this is on like Donkey Kong. I will be back, spending some money now . . . . . Oh yes, a benefit of waiting this long is I have the funds to do as I please. Hahahahahahahaha. No one to control my art, no band members to throw chairs at; it is a good time to be alive.

Desert Crab, Thank you so much for sharing your story. Im so happy you finally get to pursue music (and on YOUR terms)! I so agree, and love that we can create and keep ownership of our music. My whole channel is based around trying to help others get into making music, so hearing your story really inspires me that im on the right track and to keep going forward. I plan to cover lots more practical advice for making music, so stay tuned! Much love, Sam Wimer

I suppose it's hard to NOT start with a DAW in 2024, but I had to go a different direction. When I got back into music last year after a 20-year break, I went the hardware route with the Tascam DP-24sd. Gives me an excuse to collect a bunch of classic rack hardware, too. :)

Haha, I TRY to avoid buying more hardware if I can (rarely works). Gear collecting is an all consuming fire lol.

Is the free version of Ableton any good?

You should look into a pair of Beyerdyanmic DT-150 (250ohm I suppose) -- the cup size is very large and isolates outside noise naturally. Very comfortable and for non-production purposes you can move the drivers around your ears to get the best "sound stage", assuming you've got small-ish ears. $200 is a big ask but they last quite a long time. I have a pair I need to retire soon (bought in 2008 (so 16 years, ~$13 a year)) because my long hair eventually got into the driver of one, wasn't taking care of the phones like I should have. Of course DT-150s are classic monitoring phones for being on the floor and doing overdubs, for yonks. See them in old documentaries about Pink Floyd & others doing their recordings and such. It's a very recognizable set of cans. I'm not sure about Beyerdynamic's other offerings, I hear good things... DT-150 holds a special place in my heart just for casual listening, gaming, & multi-media. All your other things were good options. There are fake SM57s out there, looking for a different sound around the same price point, Lewitt LCT 240 is interesting. Cheers.

I've never got to try a pair of DT-150s, but a close friend of mine had a pair of the DT-770s and I absolutely LOVED them. The comfort alone was insane not to mention the driver quality. Definitely worth the extra coin if you have got it. Thanks so much for watching the video man! I love to hear what other gear everybody is using!

Buying any Novation, or Arturia and other brand products including Synths, midi devices, audio interfaces come with Ableton live Lite which. You can also get MPC beats and Luna DAWs 100% Free, and there are DAWs like Reaper which is 100% usable free permanently however they regularly ask you to pay a one off fee of $60 until You pay.

Excellent video quality and editing, I agree with some of what You say however in My opinion PC is Better but needs to be the equivalent or a i7 to i9 or AMD Razor 7 or 9 and most gear from big brands come with Ableton lite.

Thanks so much! I have used both Mac and PC to make music, and I enjoy the workflow and shortcuts of Mac a little better. PC is still great honestly and if that is what you prefer, your best music will get made on that device!

Why with the speakers with both brands you said the 5 or 8 size. Is there a reason not to recomend the 7 ? Also i want to get an audio interface for recording acoustic and electronic drumsets. What would you recomend ?
@Samwimer
@Samwimer 21 день назад
Hey Jonathan! I recommended those sizes since they are the only ones I have actually used myself. I'm sure the 7's are just as good! For your interface, make sure you have the right inputs! If you have an acoustic kit you really need to figure out how you are going to mic that bad boy. Like if you are micing the whole kit you probably have 5-10 mics running and need an interface with that many inputs. Or you might be micing the kit with just 2 overheads! I'm not sure what your specific setup is. For an electric kit just check your outputs and choose from there. I know my brother's electric kit has two 1/4-inch outputs OR a USB output that can be routed to MIDI. So think about your set-up ahead of time and find some options that fit your goals. Also, check out getting gear from sweetwater.com I'm not affiliated or sponsored with them at all, but they have really good customer service and I'm pretty sure you could get somebody on the phone and they could make some great recommendations as well! Hope this helps!

im not sure, i got a big project for making audiobooks, im not sure which to pick, akg p120 or sm57. honestly i dont know much about audio, especially recording stuff. any insights?
@Samwimer
@Samwimer День назад
I think either of those mics would serve you well! Both mics have a similar sound, but the akg p120 is a condenser mic so it is a little more sensitive and will grab more detail. So only go the condensor route if you have decent sound treatment where you are recording. Otherwise, you will pick up a lot of background noise with it. The sm57 is a dynamic mic, and has good built-in sound rejection. So if you are in a room with not much treatment, it will be more forgiving. If this is a really big project budget-wise, I would also suggest looking at the sm7B. That's my main mic and had incredible sound rejection and works great in my tiny little box studio. I have a few other videos on my channel where I talk about these mics, and compare them. Check those out and do some more research before you buy! what type of cable do I use for the microphone and where do I put it?
@Samwimer

Hey JoJo! The microphone I suggested in this video (and most microphones) uses an XLR cable, which plugs into your audio interface. Your audio interface then plugs into your computer via USB. Hope this helps!!

M50x being the "studio standard" explains the amount shit coming out of Nashville lately.
@znoozaros

Indeed. K361 would be a lot better and cheaper if you don't want to get anything more expensive
@TheFIghtin
@TheFIghtin 26 дней назад
@@znoozaros It's just the fact these things aren't really "studio monitors" because they're not neutral enough to be. They're bass boosted pleasure cans that have "studio monitors" labeled to them for marketing. Hell, they're not even the best in the M#0x line for monitoring. 40x, 60x, 70x are all better for this. To think this guy is an audio engineer, and that all of Nashville are using these things is actually funny as shit.

M50x always gets hate. But it’s excellent. And used by many musicians. Not just Nashville. Even pop artists use it for recording.. it’s great. But if you don’t like it use another. Your creativity is more important. Equipment is just that. I had mine for 10 years. Still great.
@TheFIghtin
@TheFIghtin 25 дней назад
@@jotjotzzz5357 It gets hate because it's labeled as something its not. It gets hate because the supposed inferior headphones in it's own line up are better than it. It gets hate because the Yamaha rebrand is built better. The M50x is a decent pleasure can in the $100-200 price range. Nothing more, nothing less. It gets hate when you have people like this inexperienced dude recommending it when there's actual legitimate monitors that are better for the job at half the price. I really hate to be so frank on this, but in order to get good music you need good equipment. The M50x is not at the professional level. Period. I've had the M50x for probably about 7 years. Brand new it was a decent enough headphone to kick back and relax to. But my repertoire of headphones advanced past it, with both high end sets, modified sets, and cheaper but better sounding sets. It's been stuff in a drawer somewhere for the past 6 1/2 years. To the point if it ever comes out of the drawer it probably will just get tossed. They are absolutely the best starting headphone anyone can get, because you just don't know what you're missing with better equipment until you hear it. Hint- Get a M60x. It's the same drivers as the M50, yet somehow worlds better.

I use airpods, do those have bad frequencies?
@Samwimer
@Samwimer 10 дней назад
If airpods are all you have then they will be fine! What I would suggest for you is to use a reference mix. If you learn what a song you like sounds like with your airpods, then you can try to match your song to that. Hopefully that will help it translate to other devices as well!
