We are based in North Wales and manage around 150 colonies of bees, plus nucleus colonies.
We produce Great Taste Award winning honey and sell nucleus colonies to members of the public.
Our 6 frame overwintered nucleus colonies sell out very fast every year so early ordering is advisable.

We supply F1 Mated Buckfast and Jolanta Queens throughout the season. The UK Mated Jolanta Queens are reared using genetics used by the UK's biggest bee farmer - Murray McGregor - and are not available to general public, except through resellers like us! Check out our queens page on our website.

We are passionate about beekeeping and really enjoy helping beekeepers through our RU-vid channel.
On our channel you can find information on making splits with swarm cells, making increase with queen cells, grafting larvae, foulbrood and disease inspection, honey extraction and machinery, top tips for beginners, products reviews, instructions and guidance plus much more.
#NO NONSENSE BEEKEEPING is a UK based beekeeping channel, designed to keep beekeeping as simple and enjoyable as possible. There are no overly complicated techniques or intricate pieces of equipment.
We cover all beekeeping topics ranging from queen rearing, disease recognition/control, honey extraction, swarm management/collection, how to make splits and much more!
My personal favourite aspects of beekeeping are selecting queens for rearing, rearing queens for mating, making up nucs for overwintering and collecting swarms.

Forgot to add the frame and foundation price. Glad you answered my question from the forum. If I had 20+ hives I would probably go down just the deep route but as I haven’t I still like having shallow supers as my extractor doesn’t like deep ones. Still only £125 for complete Lang on thornes but the ashforth feeders are pricey on there. As always, great video Laurence!!

Yes. Ashforth feeders. Really useful. If I was starting again (I'm winding down now) I would make sure that each of my hives had it's own Ashforth feeder. I only have 15 of them - but one per hive is the way to go. So useful.

Fantastic video! Great to see what other people's opinions are, personally I'm a fan of the 14x12 hives but have found that buying a 2nd quality deep and a 14x12 extension in the sales has saved me a good few quid. I will however be taking a better look at your underfloor entrance. For me the killer in cost always seems to be foundation and cant seem to find it much cheaper than £20 + p&p for 10 sheet's. But as always great video thanks for sharing

I much prefer the wire queen excluders. The plastic ones never line up properly and keep sliding around when you stack your hive back together. I will happily pay the extra money to not have that hassle every single inspection. I do use them when I put the MAQS strips though, as the formic acid won’t damage the wire QE.
@parkinsonga3092

I'm sticking to homemade, I have used watering trays for roofs but I currently use solid plastic sheets. It's all by products from a shed manufacturer, frames and queen excluders plus any other bits are from Thorne.
@ianwatkins3002
@ianwatkins3002 2 года назад
Ha! I thought you were going to say Langstroth 🤣Another option for the roof is 4mm correx (or 2mm from somewhere like Wickes) - The Apiarist has a post on those. Even cheaper than the horticultural tray - which is a very good idea.

Just a tip for frames buy a pack of commercial top bar seconds, £5 for 50 and make your own frames by cutting your own top bars, bottom bars and sides from these.

I set up my first hive last winter, weekends on the internet and I would question the prices quoted. Secondly all those items will have a £10 P&P to be added on. And still with both the set ups illustrated you couldn't keep a single bee, no frames and wax which add up to a good cost.

@lorus511

Make a simple 4" eke for your feeder, gives you the space you need and in the winter you can top your hive off with a wool blanket that will fit inside keeps the bees warm and absorbs any moisture.
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 года назад
But you still need to then go and buy the feeder as and a crownboard. I think best off not buying either of those two and getting the insulated poly feeder. Makes life so much easier and something you never have to store

Me one flat plywood floor, I have two brood boxes with two holes in them as enterances at each side. I use corks to close them if need be. Then two 10cm shallow empty boxes for the supers, with two lids with holes in them, for on top of each super, for cut comb. A hesian bag as a crown board cut to size and a sheet of old tar roofing felt as the roof. All my twenty colonies are like that. Cost very little. I think the way to make money in beekeeping is not spend a fortune too.

(Different manufacturers out there) My mate had a plastic QE he had problems we measured with callipers. His size was noticeably smaller than my wire QE and his bees struggled to fit through it. Detrimentally.

Another really good subject and video - lots of different, healthy opinions. Anel in Greece sell some really good equipment at reasonable prices. I'm in Netherlands and use Langstroth sizes from Anel. Insulated, recyclable plastics - my bees have no issue. Wooden frames/wax foundation in the brood, plastic foundation in some of the supers - again no problem for the bees. Anel have some excellent optional equipment - in built roof feeder, queen excluders, pollen collectors etc. I started by building my own wooden hives to typical Dutch sizes (spaarkast) and although I love woodwork the cost and time was more than purchase price from Anel. I know what I would do now, but thats just my thoughts. Excellent channel 👍.

nice one. I am going homemade base, poly brood,plastic queen excluder, homemade supers, poly feeder and plastic roof depending what the garden centre has. Going langstroth because easier to make. 8/4 ply gives me 5 supers a lid and a base for £40 and bandq cut it for free. Well thats where your queen will live when I get her. Wish abelo made a poly feeder their kit is great quality. Try and go skip diving and make a poly feeder. Made supers for my nucs from insulation for free. Maybe we can start a collection of ideas to make poly typekit from what we can find and compare notes.Poly brood boxes and roof/feeders now seem to play a big part in bee survival but are very expensive.
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 2 года назад
I think bees will survive in pretty much anything. My drivers are longevity of equipment and time to taken to procure/make, which is different for people who are time rich.
@veragiles981
@veragiles981 2 года назад
I've got cedar supers and deeps. It would make much more sense to have all brood but I'd have to convert to poly as I don't think I'd be able to lift a wooden deep that was filled with honey. I love the look of the poly feeder; makes great sense as it's so multipurpose.

guess this would work if you could extract deep frames OK. i like the simplicity of your thinking though... cost of equipment + ease of operation. great for a serious professional beek going forwards. my current extractor can take 9 shallow frames of various types but only 4 deeps i think but needs cages. so additional cost in time extracting and in additional equipment, but thought provoking video. Many thanks Steve

@BlackMountainHoney

Swienty is rubbish. You need to mod the bottom to add the beespace otherwise its entirely unusable. The mod is quite difficult as well as you need to bond wood to plastic. Could try and glue plastic strips but its a right old faff. Abelo is just ready out of the box

A complete double deep Lang, with 8 or more brood frames, last year queen, all frames built, full of bees, used hive = 110€.. in Croatia. This spring queens will be 10€. Plastic bottom pollen collecting board from Serbia 10€. Maybe less. Plastic frame feeders, excluders, all kinds, from Turkey. 10 for 10€.. The number of beeks around me, way too many. The amount of hives for the flow = crop, unsustainable. Better we get, more hives we keep, more modern it becomes.. now, we're at the point where only honey makes money
