Question from Episode 222 of "If I Were You" with special guest Bo Burnham! Jake and Amir and Bo discuss friendship. You can listen to the entire episode here: headgum.com/ifiwereyou/ with new episodes every Monday!
He's stated that his family have actually always been supportive and any mention of his family in his acts are just straight up for the bit. Also, I guess I have to burst this bubble, 99.99% of comedians who tell jokes about their "experiences" are actually lying. They are carefully constructed stories meant to entertain you.
I went to the same school as he did, he's a few year above me though, and it was an all guys school so it makes sense that he's comfortable with sexuality.
Bo's kinda great. He really did try to put himself in motorcycle's shoes/tyres. He's really good with this stuff. Either that or he knows what it's like to have a best friend.
I kinda get where jakes coming from..guys can feel violated too and if he's just letting his friend do bc he feels kinda pressured then that could leave a mark. Like if I let some guy or girl touch just to be nice and I didn't really want it, I'd feel kinda sucky afterwards. I appreciate jake's approach to try and grow and be open minded and wow was Bo insightful!
i like how people call bo homophobic and he says stuff like this. As a gay guy myself bo has actually made me feel so comfortable with my sexuality its unreal
as a queer person i absolutely agree. he obviously has made a lot of gay jokes in the past but i truly don’t think they came from a place of homophobia. he treats it like it’s so normal (which it is !!) anyway i just adore him
@@melodyhaviland9393 exactly! I dont think people understand that when bo is making jokes the humour behind the songs/jokes is from other peoples perspectives meaning that he is making fun of the people actually saying that. And bo has never even made a statement on his sexuality before. Ive heard alot of people say hes straight from his song “straight white man” but he has said before he has made that to make fun of straight white men, categorising them without him in it. For all we know bo might not even be straight🤷🏻♂️
I literally love this so much! It's not like watching a normal "interview" where's it's like: "I AM A CRINGEY INTERVIEWER AND THIS IS FAMOUS, AMERICAN COMEDIAN, BO BURNHAM". It's just 3 bros hanging out and talking :)
Jake's approach to being a better person is really refreshing. He's like "I'm either homophobic or misogynistic". And the thing is, being one or the either doesn't make you a bad person. I feel like people overreact when they are told they are being one or the other. Like Jake's approach is actually great because he's secure with himself that he knows he's not a bad person, but that he just has a wrong thought process, and is trying to unlearn sort of years of institutionalization.
No he's just allowed himself to get so brainwashed by this victim culture that he's looking for this "wrong thought process" in everything regarding gays or women. Bo's approach is refreshing because he acknowledges the problem but he doesn't feel like he has to apologize everytime he talks about gays. Edit: to further prove my point, check out the part from 6:20, where Jake goes out of his way to call himself homophobic and that he doesn't respect women in 20 seconds. Then another 20 seconds later, he says "There might be deep-rooted homophobia in me, but i TRY REALLY HARD TO BE OPEN". Don't get me wrong, I've seen probably every episode of Jake&Amir and I like them, but this apologetic tiptoeing around other people's feelings is fucked up. Hell, when Bo says "no, you're not homophobic", Jake responds "no it's fine". He calls himself homophobic and when people tell them he's not, he reassures them that it's ok and he knows what an evil son of a bitch he is for his thoughts. Also it's a pretty bad mental state to have for a comedian if you're scared to make fun of something.
I don't think he's either, he is straight and bring straight obviously he's going to enjoy having a girl sucking him off rather than a guy. It's only because he's not gay, not that he hates gays
@Lola lazy this was 6yrs ago so I don't remember which part exactly you're referring to. I think what I was referring to was BO reminding the guy in the hat that blow jobs are a favor to men because no woman is enthralled to give blow jobs
@@michaelscott5468 no he did not have any misogyny. He didnt think it through, the correct answer was "lesbian girl blowing boy to experiment of her own will: it would be preferable because arguably both parties would want it". Bo tried to correct him on it as well when he thought it was homophobia. It was neither one.
@@fedea82 internal misogyny*, and yes he did, he said that if a lesbian wanted to it’s fine and It’s hot but when the scenario was about two guys he was uncomfortable with it and thought it was weird and that it made him gay. But he corrected himself and he realized that it was internal homophobia, and although he’s right about that it’s also internal misogyny since sexualizing Lesbian relationships is rooted in misogyny. He’s not misogynistic, I never claimed he was but he does or at least did have internal misogyny in this video, everyone does, so do I. But it’s good to catch urself and correct urself like he did.
@@michaelscott5468 nah, no internal phobias. He said what he said and it was right originally. If the guy gets horny about two lesbians sure, that's a double standard, but no hatred or phobias towards gays nor women are there, just sexual attraction to lesbians while simultaneous sexual aversion to men. That's what not being attracted to men entails, it's completely natural to feel uncomfortable watching or thinking of men having gay sex. And the whole "everyone does have x phobias" is bs. I don't, nor does many people I know. Complete acceptance. And what he did, calling himself out, was not only cringe af but also factually wrong. He should be proud of who he is, there's nothing wrong w him nor his thought process.
"What you blow guys, that's a thing for girls" I have never heard anyone relate homophobia to mysogyny in the way Bo does here, holy shit that is so insightful
I am so damn much in love with his beard-look. And his cute, perfect smile. And his messy-but-always-gorgeous hair. And his adorable, sad eyes. I even love his nose. I'm just completely infatuated.....
I wish the full episode could be found here. Out of all the podcast type formats I have seen on RU-vid, watching/listening to this was the best one yet. I didn't skip through it, or lose interest, because I like the personalities involved with the discussion, and genuinely want to hear their opinions.
I don’t really think it’s a true “favor” I think the Pal is just offering and maybe hoping for more if Motorcycle gets off. I think Jake is coming from a consent/comfort type levels. But very interesting Bo take! Super intriguing convo
My bff is quite gay. I mean, she's bi but she leans towards women more, so being a good wingwoman I arranged to put her and my other bisexual friend in the same room (said friend is pretty hot). They got drunk and made out and I felt super good for making it happen.
I get where both of them are coming from honestly I dont necessarily think they disagree just are coming at it from different biases bo would and jake wouldn't
Jake isn't homophobic. He's socialized. Jake, much like me, was brought up around people where two dudes experimenting is fucking weird and two girls experimenting is hot. And Jake's feelings reflect that. It takes years to rewire your brain and undo that socialization. Anyhow, Bo is incredibly smart.
Cool about all of you being open-minded and all that, but how have you not even considered that this is a friendship that may be ruined by nothing more than sexual experimentation? Think if the story was about a straight couple of friends - a guy and a girl. Would you really advise best friends to mess around, knowing that this could very well ruin their friendship? I feel that in this case, gender and sexuality should be irrelevant. The question is: should friends experiment with friends?
