I'm from Melbourne Australia, and I can tell you that the eucalyptus can take many climates and even snow. They are also one of the fastest growing trees in the world

Hi Matthew. No, This is not a fast growing tree but it's an amazing tree. The whole eucalyptus family trees are my favorites. Research Kiri tree. That's a fast growing tree. And they are beautiful. I hope everything gets better in Australia brother.

@@MrEnso That would be Flagstaff, in northern Arizona. Also higher elevations, not generally where you'd be planting trees such as the ski resort near Tuscon, Mt. Lemon.

The reason you don't have to worry about winter is that you have a building made out of concrete/block next to it. That keeps it warm enough during the winter. I remember my Ficus trees had the same advantage at my previous house and they never froze much. My worry would be that it would get brittle like most eucalyptus trees and a huge branch could destroy that guest house. Love the video though and bought a tiny rainbow gum from Shamus recently as well after watching this. Thanks for the inspiration!

I just bought a sapling rainbow eucalyptus here in Ventura County, CA. Now everyone is telling me not to plant it, that it's invasive, has shallow, destructive roots, and in high winds (which we have) they can lose lots of branches and even the entire tree can blow over. Is this your experience with it?

We have not had a very cold winter here in many yrs...and you have the base at least and much of the rest in a nice microclimate...but it may also be a function of improperly stated or never truly tested cold tolerance...nice !

I found the pollinator density to be particularly interesting. Eucs are an important nectar source for all sorts of parrots in Australia---this would suggest that they make a lot of nectar. What time of year did they bloom? Winter/summer/spring/fall?

i love rainbow eucalyptus, but it just is'nt cold hardy at all. it comes from a place where freezes are basically impossible. Do you want a branch to fall from 100 feet high onto your house because there was a freeze and the 400 lb branch died? I certainly don't. I try to stick to the blue gum or lemon eucalyptus just because they can take the cold better. I don't want to waste my time with a tree that will get 40 ft tall or more and then freeze back halfway to the ground. Edit: mind you I'm in 10a Florida. We still every few years get down below freezing. (10a's lowest number is -1.1C which is still technically below freezing). Even that is enough to upset a rainbow and cause dead branches. I would say these things are less hardy than a coconut even. They may survive, but youll have a 40ft tall hazard one of these years if the polar vortex ever decides to throw you the finger. I hate the USA's climate.... lol. Anyway, not to be all negative, hopefully the tree is doing fantastic and you are in an excellent microclimate. Take care.

yes it will grow in phx. i planted one a couple years ago. i ordered it from a nursery from florida on ebay. they are sensitive to frost when young but these past few 'winters' (esp. this one) have been so warm you should have no problem unless we have a real freeze when it's young. i wouldn't recommend planting it anywhere near this close to your house though, or near any underground pipes/utilities, etc. mine is planted out in the middle of my back yard and it's already the biggest tree on my property. bigger than other tree's i planted 5 years prior.
