People really need to learn the differences between racism and institutional racism...
@rocknroll9queen
@rocknroll9queen 8 лет назад
+Damon242 the suffix "ism" means "systematic"... i thought that meant the word encompasses institutional racism? and that's why reverse racism isn't a thing, but instead discrimination against white people is simply discrimination, not institutional, and not racism.
@Damon242
@Damon242 8 лет назад
+succubus the suffix more commonly refers to practice (or even a system of practice, eg. consumerism). Institutional racism is very specific and and is more like a byproduct-racism, dealing with majorities and minorities and general automatic-intolerance of the minority (like the historical issues of U.S citizens vs immigrants), but it's used incorrectly by some to provide exemption of what would otherwise be objective racist behaviour because they perceive themselves as a member of the minority. It's really only meant to be used in an academic context to understand racist behaviour and the reasons why particular behaviours and perceptions exist, not to determine whether someone is or is not being racist. Racism is very clear, however, and it's any expression of discrimination based on skin colour or ethnicity. So vilifying, stereotyping, or belittling a group based on the colour of their skin or their ethnic group is racism regardless of what the greater social context is.
@Damon242
@Damon242 8 лет назад
+RAE-Mischel Thompson-Cooper I'm sorry, but that's simply incorrect. You're looking into the reasons for racist ideas and behaviours, of which is the correct context for discussing institutional racism, but the actual expression/action is racism. What do you consider it to be when two different institutions meet and there is discrimination based on race/ethnicity/skin colour? Would you then accept racism as racism or would you need to weigh up the institutions first? An African-American goes to China and makes fun of the way the Chinese look, or a Chinese person goes to the U.S and makes fun of the way an African-American looks - does geography and politics then matter? Adding so many layers to what is simple discrimination only encourages further discrimination, once people believe that there are exemptions.
@Damon242
@Damon242 8 лет назад
+RAE-Mischel Thompson-Cooper I think the problem of our discussion is that we are circling around the same ideas but not settling on a definition. Yes, the actions (not exclusively violent or physical, but the practice) are because of systems of belief, but it is when these beliefs are expressed that it becomes racism (it is the combination of the belief and act, as without expression is doesn't exist - at least not as far as observation goes). But there are so many institutions that develop these beliefs, from family to social circles to neighbourhoods, schools, employment, media, etc. one's beliefs are not forged by a single institution. The problem is that people think that there is only one, and seem to identify this one as whoever happens to be in charge (does the president or prime minster happen to be male or Caucasian? Does this agree with the belief that male + Caucasian immediately represents the patriarchy?) or otherwise what the majority looks like.

+Jake Cox. No, I didnt take it as a personal attack and if it was said right, it might even be a little funny. And what would the higher purpose of doing a spoof on black people be? There would be no need for a role reversal with black people getting mocked to show how racism feels bc we already know what racism feels like. Buzzfeed is trying to help people like you understand what racism feels like. Clearly, now you get it, a little. It feels like an attack on your entire race and it feels unfair. But no one is saying thats what all white people are like--it is only a satire after all. This video was probably 3 minutes long and even just in those 3 minutes, you feel like its outrageous that anyone would make these stereotypes and these claims. Imagine if that lasted more than those 3, 4 minutes. You hate these few stereotypes, but imagine if you grew up having those stereotypes reinforced in not just a couple videos, but on primetime television, in school, at the workplace. Thats what POC deal with literally everyday. Trust me, if this video was a denigration on white people as a whole, thered be a lot worse than just people saying white people like kale. This was meant to be taken with a grain of salt, maybe even for people to crack a chuckle or two at the satire that they cleverly infused in the video.

People don't like to feel uncomfortable. For some people race is an uncomfortable topic. People would rather talk about everything under the sun except for race. Especially American people. America was built off of almost everything negative. People like to push race off to the side and now that it's coming to the forefront and people are starting to talk about it and make plans on how to make things better for people of color, people who aren't a poc feel uncomfortable. They're scared. People channel fear into anger and hate. Walla, you have americans and the youtube comment section on a video that tries to put things into perspective. +ashleymair This was suppose to be some kind of role reversal to make white people relate to people who are not white but this kind of stuff does go through white people's minds. And I've actually gone on dates where the guy im with keeps bringing up my skin color and how it's a good thing for white people to get together with other races. it is always super awkward situation to be in and i can't imagine someone wanting to go for a second date with someone who somehow keeps bringing your skin color up in completely unrelated conversations no matter how hard you try to have a normal conversation with them.... yeah my advice to people who do that is: if you actually seriously want to date someone, do not do that. There are also soooo many people who find it perfectly acceptable to talk negatively about white skin color. I get the "you're so pale" or "are you a vampire?" and "you should really go get a tan" or "OH! my eyes! I'm blind!" That last one being played off as some kind of "joke" to make you feel bad about your skin color and go bake yourself until you get darker (or burn and freckle in my case) I don't know if other people get these kinds of questions but i'm frequently asked things like "How do white people know when their skin is dry?" or "why does your face get so red?"
@nerdywizzard
@nerdywizzard 8 лет назад
Ally Smith I'm extremely pale too and I get the exact same questions! It sucks but at the same time, if that is all us white people can complain about, we are very lucky. At least we are not being thrown to the ground and cuffed just for wearing a hoodie, or being pulled over for "stealing" a car we bought with our own money. There are many things POC have to go through because of their skin color. Although we shouldn't have to, I think we can deal with some harsh words and awkward conversations. It's better than being racially profiled or judged because of our dark skin. :)

It's a term for people that aren't white, get over it. I have absolutely zero issues with White people, or anyone of ANY race, specifically because of their race. Also, the definition of RACISM is the belief that your race is superior to all other races. I don't think there is anything special about anyone's race. It's a color of skin. It's showing what they'd think IF they thought the way coloured people think so don't go writing "but white people don't think that way" because that's the whole point. Read the title of the video and understand what it means before jumping to conclusions. And, if some people do worry about being "too white", they don't have to because no one tells them to be ashamed of their race. Ok so someone said in the comments that racism doesn't exist for white people. The definition of racism is discrimination against someone for their race, and white is a race. I'm white and go to a school in New Mexico (which is the state that has the highest population of Hispanics and no Hispanic/ Mexican is not the same thing as white ) and I get teased all the time for being white. Now I'm not saying that racism isn't a problem with other races, it's a huge problem and needs to stop. I'm just saying everyone, no matter their race (white,black, Hispanic, etc.) have had to deal with racism and it shouldn't be less noticed by what race you are. Plus some people believe that it's ok to treat a white person rudely because they treated your ancestors poorly, well yes people that weren't white got treated horrible and there's still some issues today but don't be a hypocrite and do something to someone because someone else did it to you.
@gdfan45
@gdfan45 8 лет назад
+Megan Byrnes first off, im white too, just so you know im not biased against you. but the issue with using the dictionary definition of racism is that it was written by a white man is the early 1900s. dictionaries are not perfect, unbiased things, they were written by humans and are therefore prejudiced towards their writers, in this case mainly old white men. the true definition of racism as people use it today is the systemic oppression of a group of people based on race by a privileged group. in american culture, the privileged group is white people, and the oppressed group is everyone else. the fact of the matter is that in america as it is today, it is impossible for a white person to experience racism since they cannot by systemically oppressed based on race since the system we live in is set up to BENEFIT white people, not oppress them. a white person has never been shot by police because theyre white, has never been asked to prove their citizenship because theyre white, has never been assumed to be a terrorist because they're white. what youve experienced is prejudice (which isnt a good thing either), which is more of an individual instead of systemic thing.

+gdfan45 Racism, how I and most of my friends and peers see it as, is being discriminatory to someone based only on their race. If anyone, of any race, discriminates against someone else of any race, it is racist. If you go far enough back, every race was at some point was oppressed. For example, the Irish (Who are considered white) were enslaved, as well. You can be racist to anyone.
@meganbyrnes3651
@meganbyrnes3651 8 лет назад
+gdfan45 the book definition is not written in favor of any race, it's the literally meaning of that word and cops of other races have shot people because they are white. The media just decides on what's a better story. They almost hide it from you to create friction between people(look it up). Look up the numbers, there have been more shootings of black cop shooting black people than white vs black or black vs white.
@user-uf4cd7fy6q
@user-uf4cd7fy6q 8 лет назад
+Megan Byrnes No. Just no. The difference is when a black person is accused of shooting/killing someone, they are more likely to be convicted than a white person whose trial has the same amount of evidence. When a white person kills a black person, they are more likely to not get convicted, whether or not they are guilty, while a black person is more likely to get convicted.
@user-uf4cd7fy6q
@user-uf4cd7fy6q 8 лет назад
+gdfan45 Yes you're right. Racism involves institutionalized and societal oppression/discrimination/prejudice. Yes, someone can be rude to, prejudiced against, or discriminate against a white person, but reverse racism is not a thing. White people don't have to worry when walking down the street at night that a cop may stop them because of their race. A white person can much more easily find makeup for their skin tone. A white person doesn't have to worry that they will be convicted for a crime they didn't commit based on stereotypes about their race. A white person can look at the media and easily find people their race, most often in prominent roles. There is no reverse racism.

I think that mindset is just a norm whenever you are somewhere where your race is not predominant. For example, I’m a white female and I grew up right on the border of Mexico in Texas. I went to a private school where most of the students were from Mexico. I was one of the only people in that school who was not at least Hispanic and did not speak Spanish. I’d always get comments about how I’m such a “white girl” every time I couldn’t handle spicy foods or how I have such a “white name”. Often I’d say something or do something and someone would say “wow, that was really white”. I also always hear the “white people are crazy” joke and I had a friend who would joke about me being “racist” or a “nazi” simply because I’m white (I can assure you I am neither racist nor a nazi). All these jokes never bothered me, though. I don’t get offended by things like that. I did, however, adopt a mindset similar to the one in the video. I would avoid acting a certain way so that I wouldn’t look like a common white girl. So I understand how that mindset can be developed, and how annoying it must be for people of color to have to deal with on a daily basis.

Every race is racist. As a black person I look at my own race like "why do we do that" sometimes I wish some black people would stop living up to these stereotypes and ruining it for the rest of us, because in truth there are some things I feel ashamed of about my race. So if you take the time to think about all races might as well be the same. We all play the victim, we all have racist thoughts. I just think we are all misunderstood.

I went to college to learn what I know.Paid thousands of dollars. If you watch these Buzzfeed videos they actually portray it quite accurately you just have to be willing to care, to listen and think critically. You can take sociology 101 at your local college even community college. Or simply think of race relations in this country, American history if it were taught to you accurately, systematic racism (all things that can be googled as well, if you really care). Or, simply listen to the racist things your friends and families say about people of color (don't say you don't know racist people) and you can understand where the insecurities come from.

IMHO what Morgan Freeman meant is that when you racialize everything, you're actually creating racism when there was none at first. I agree with that, I experienced comments like "oh that's because you're white"; when all I could see was an unity, the other person saw 2+ sides. That is the fragmentation I can't understand, especially because even if we're from different race, studies from decades ago say that *the environnement in which you're raised has a bigger influence on your behaviour than the genetic with which you're born* (about 60%/40%). It still hasn't been contradicted since then. Plus, I don't think that it's actually race that makes us feel different, but our culture. And since our culture can change/grow/adapt (unlike race), I still struggle to see why we talk about "racism" so much. Edit: sorry, I must be naive to you, but I really feel that the actual problem is cultural problem, not race problem (hence "racism" being irrelevant to me).

EmmaLlanos "Career, money and job security is very important to White people." It is funny that you say this because just a few days ago, two East Asians on the commuter train behind me were talking to each other and I overheard the say, "You know how Caucasians only major in Arts?" and then one of them proceeded to talk about how the guy with the B.A. is working at a car dealership (they were talking about this with a negative tone in their voice). I have also worked at a workplace where I was the only white WOMAN there (so you're comment about me being a "white boy" was incorrect), and I overheard the East Indian lady say something like, "Canadians don't care about money." and once when I said to my supervisor, that the workload was "too much" (I actually meant to say please push the two conveyor belts together so the fish doesn't fall on the floor so I don't have to bend over ever time), he said to me, "You f***ing Canadian!" (they use the word "Canadian" as a synonym for "white", I've noticed). Basically, he thought I just was too lazy to keep up with the pace of the conveyor belt, but the two janitors from the night before didn't put the two machines back in the exact spot the found them in. I have also had more than one of my Chinese coworkers point at me and say "Canadians are lazy". They of course aren't referring to people who were born in Canada but of East Asian descent. They are only referring to white people, I'm pretty sure. The Koreans, Chinese, and East Indians here in Vancouver never hire white people either, because they think we don't want to work.

+jsphat81 Yeah....this has happened to me before. If it's a group of people I already know, I totally don't care. But if I walk into a place down the neighborhood from where I live and go into say....this figures shop that is exclusively African American art (and so many beautiful paintings and sculptures and oh mai gosh...The artists are so talented/worked hard at their craft!)....I end up being kind of self conscious and wondering if I'm actually welcome, or if people are going to get the wrong idea because I'm the only "white girl" I've seen in two hours. "Nerdy" doesn't help on top of it either. But I really love the beautiful art in some of the shops, but eventually just leave because I feel like I'm intruding. Same as if I go to a place with a couple of my black friends, and no one else is pale like me....I feel out of place (though, doesn't help that I'm shy around new people in situations like that period). And, I guess with /that/ kind of thing, it's not too much of a different feeling as to when any of my friends take me to a club, mixed or not, and I feel out of place with all of the clubbing people, or gallery showing for art cause I'm not dressed up all fancy, I just saw they were doing an open gallery.

+Genisay unfortunately, most black people, and likely all of your black friends, feel this way all the time. Feeling hyper conscious because you know that you're the only one that looks like you.

I don't understand why people care about skin,hair and your family history.
