I rescued two feral cats in 2020 and we now have an amazing bond - all it takes is lots of time spent with them, playing and training are the best things and I do them daily. Once you bond through these active activities, they will bring their affection to you. And it takes time, one of my cats has just started exhibiting new affectionate behaviour this month (after we moved house, weirdly). And above all, respect your cats - if they don’t want to do something, don’t make them do it. Treat them like a human in that respect.

A great recall command other than calling your cat's name, I learned from the show "cats vs dogs" is "Touch". So when I want my cat to come over to to me within grabbing distance, I say "Touch" and he runs over to me, and physically touches his nose to my hand. Then I click and give him a treat. It's really super helpful if I need to scoop him up quickly in an emergency, or if he were to get out of his harness. (That's why I also keep his backpack nearby)

My Bengal loved going on walks. He was a natural, I didn’t have to “train” him at all. He was patient while putting on the harness from day one. He acted like this cat in the video, a naturally great cat.

My cat was sort-of like this too, just had to get him used to the harness itself (so he doesn't flop over as much lol) and he was good to go! Chill cats are a breeze, might not be the same for other temperaments.

When should you start training a cat after you bring them home? I'm getting a new cat soon and was wondering when to start
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 3 года назад
YAYYY! Incoming cat!! :) I would try to avoid training any cat under 12weeks as they can get overwhelmed easier. If the cat you are taking hoome is older than that, you can start training as soon as your cat is comfortable around the place and around you. Consider trainin as "play time" or "bonding time", keep sessions short and sweet and start with tricks that are easy and rewardinng for both your new companion and yourself (Finger Targetting or Come When Called are a good start). - Come When Called - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bdjEKMsKZ-M.html - Finger Targetting - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZQ0ITyonFxg.html Good luck!

Wish I had seen your video before I took my cat out.. Ever since the first time I put on a harness and went out with her on the grass outside she panicked so hard. I thought sitting with her in the grass for a while might eventually calm her but it didn't and I gave up and went in again. She never had problems with the harness indoors and didn't care much about it but the moment the door opened she got terrified, screaming and I could never go outside with her again.. I moved too quickly and ruined it completely. She died two months ago at the age of 12, she is soo missed and I wish I could have experienced the outdoors with her

They are very good at escaping like you said, and I was sure of it, but I wanted to get my cat some vitamin c from the sun. Its healthy cuz she doesn't have much energy and gets sick on and off. (Yeah, I'll be going for a vet visit.) Busy street, she darted, the leash pulled back, and she fought the leash by facing ME, which snugged it off. Luckily I was able to find her and grabbed her and put her back in the house. She is an elderly cat not food motivated and set in her ways, so that about does it for outside chances lol.

This video has been EXTREMELY helpful, as have all of your others! I'm working on clicker training. My cat Momo is 9 months old. She understands finger target, sit, and we're working on spin. I've also been feeding her every meal on my shoulder (that one was an absolute pro tip, working great). Sometimes she doesn't come when called or will ignore my finger target. Point 8 in this vid was really interesting. I find myself repeating commands over and over sometimes. Do you have anymore tips about how I can best motivate her to listen after one cue? I bought a harness and am preparing to take her outside, but I'm really nervous that if she escapes the harness, she won't come when called and she might get hurt. Thanks so much for your time! Please keep making videos! These are the best I've seen on training, and I've seen A LOT!
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 3 года назад
Thank you so much for taking a minute to share some love! This kind of messages keep me going! Regarding your question. There's no way you are going to know if your cat will come when called if they eventually get off leash, but there are things you can do to prevent that from happening. - Train your cat to be comfortable on the harness - Train yourself to understand when your cat is trying to get off the harness. It's pretty obvious and you can prevent it just by walking towards them. - Start slow in places where you can control the environment (home/building/parking lot) Lastly, despite I won't say this is 100% certain, cat's are not a hit and run animal. If they escape, they will most likely either climb a tree, sniff something they missed while walking or check out a hole. They are both predator and prey and their way to explore new territory is with caution. So you won't see yourself running after a cat (unless they actively want to prevent you from catching them). If they escape, take it easy. Let them do their thing and approach once they are done. If you run towards them, they are going to sense that freedom is over and run from you.

@@OutdoorBengal I'll keep all that in mind. Will definitely start somewhere where risks are low. I don't think Momo would want to get too far from me even if she did get out of her harness but just want to take all the precautions I can. Thanks so much!

When my Bengal-Tabby acts up I take her to the coat closet for a time out it calms her down usually 10-15 minutes Does the Trick. Thank you for these tips! I have been walking my cat around my neighbourhood. She is usually allowed to be outdoors during the day but has to be indoors at night. We walk her when the sun is setting so that she can still explore during those prime sunset hours but in a safe manner with us. We are hoping to eventually transition her to be an indoor cat but I feel that she will definitely whine a lot to go out - she still whines at night to go out even after walking and play time. @OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 3 года назад
This will really depend on your cat's excitement and yours. Anything below 20min it's almost not worth it (because it takes time for them to start relaxing and enjoying) so between 20min until their stress, boredome, hunger kicks in (or yours). In quiet places I easily do between 1hour or 2hours. In the city, never above 30min because she gets nervous.

I bought a tied own strap, its very long, broad and light, that way I can let it go and let him explore without me holding it and it doesn't get tangled, and I can see where he is if disappearing under a bush and pick it up easily without getting too close which can make him run to not be caught. Doing this over two years, I can now take him for walks around the common grounds without clipping the lead on, I just walk with him and he knows when I say no if he wants to go somewhere he shouldnt. Great fun.

Thanks for this, I might have to try it. I was adopted by a young tuxedo male, but then another, older, barnyard cat came up and became increasingly aggressive to the tuxedo over the years. Sweetheart with me, but LOATHES other cats. Had to pen the older in a cat house (all the amenities and the lion's share of my free time, yet the one time he escaped he went straight for the tuxedo and started a fight.) Drives me crazy, but would like to keep him from getting cabin fever. A leash and trips around the block might be the ticket.

@OutdoorBengal

Hello!! I stopped using Amogato as it goes through the head and it scratches their upper eyes area (specially sensible) and it was provoking some hair loss on Mia. I’d 100% go for the escape proof instead ☺️

When I got my various cats they were already indoor/outdoor (they were mostly malnourished strays). 3 out of 6 I was able to leash train and take them on little excursions with me. But leashing them in their own backyard just bred resentment between us. They weren't having it. Going on a forest hike or a farm visit with me, the leash was no big deal. That was the "price" of travel and they gladly accepted it. The other 3 never enjoyed leaving home territory very much so I didn't push it.

Thank you very much for this! I have two questions on the outdoors, would love your opinion: 1- My vet doesn't recommend going out with the cat as he might contract worms or parasite when on the street. How do you prevent this? 2- How do you behave in the event of encountering stray cats or dogs on a leash? Can they interact and "be friends"? Thank you very much again for your contents :)
@whatiknow9543
@whatiknow9543 3 года назад
I know this question is for Albert but for 1 my vet just said don’t take the cat out. That being said cats can be taken out for walks on a leash but I believe cats with outdoor access need to be dewormed more frequently. I found that on google. I have not trained mine to go out yet.
@GreenWitch1
@GreenWitch1 10 месяцев назад
Get a new vet! That’s ridiculous. How are they going to get worms walking outside?
@memorylanemodelcars
@memorylanemodelcars 8 месяцев назад
#1 Feed & Water your Cat just before going out. This will make it far less Likely it Will try to Taste Something Which Could cause Worms. #2 Remember Stray animals are unpredictable they're not Pets so Friendly Encounters aren't likely. But Dogs & Cats on Leashes are different because most owners give them Socialization Training & Reward them for Friendly Interaction When Encountering other pets

I would always prefer to walk behind your cat, especially if you're alone. So you're always aware of what's been going on and can take action if necessary. It's also not that easy for your cat to wriggle out of the harness if you're walking behind the cat.

Hi Albert and Mia! I just love your channel and your advice. Puko started in a harness and walking Amsterdam at 5 months. Question: What Happens If you are out walking and your cat has a panic moment? How do you handle correcting it? If something does frighten them do you pick them up and cuddle? Do you sit and face the fear? Just curious as Puko walks fine, but we have bottle recycling bins in Amsterdam and it never fails they are either being emptied or being filled and that noise terrifies Puko. First time almost lost him out of his harness, but sat him down and calmly put it back on and then carried him. Now he just leaps up my back, but then doesn't want to walk anymore. Just wondering how to calm him for anything that comes up scary on the walk! 🐈👍🌷
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 3 года назад
Hello!! That's a really good point and I do struggle with it as well. When Mia freaks out, depending on the reason I behave differently. If it's a real threat (DOG) I will help/make her jump on my shoulder seeking protection. If it's a car / person / noise I'll make her sit down and relax on her own. Once she is sat, I'll reward. (To reward Puko outdoors, any treat won't work. You need something Puko get's crazy for. In Mia's case it's either jam or raw turkey). If I see her getting calmer and curious again, I'll restart walk. I hope this helps!

How did u make Mia follow you as you walk first ? On a walk with my cat it was always me standing and him sniffing around, as I though it’s impossible to teach them to follow us. I usually just did that in a garden outside the city as I live in Copenhagen - and all quiet places are filled with dogs. Thanks for all the videos :)! Also I think our cats are the same age, except Mia looks so tiny in all your videos in comparison to my Russian Blue 🙈

Hello Joanna! Let me try to put it in a concise way: 1) To be able to lead, you have to start with a shorter leash 2) When your cat gets in front of you, you limit the reach with your leash. 3) If they stay behind, you keep walking. 4) Recall your cat when you are at about 50% of the leash, but keep walking. 5) When your cat comes praise, then reward (treat) Note that for this to work you need the best available treat possible (dry meat for example) otherwise, it won't work.

The video is shown as being HD but I would swear it looks as if the camera is only 720p. Plus I would hang a few curtains to remove the slight echo caused by hard room surfaces (something most restaurants should do as well). I am very slightly hard of hearing and room echo does not help. There are even a few restaurants I avoid because of this.

well, BUT if they're behind you and they get spooked, THAT's how they slip out of a collar--a cat can duck his head and he's free. being ahead, while TOO significantly ahead is a bad thing, is better than being behind, esp in place where surprises can pop out around buildings or bushes or rocks or whatever.

Hello, thank you for this very nice video! I am actually leash walking, and I clicker train my cat for a couple of months now. She is 7 months old, and she loves it. But I wondered how to get her to follow me more often, and as you say, I should keep walking when she wants to stop, and she will catch up. I will definitely try, but I am afraid it will take more time for her to come to me than a couple of seconds; how is it with Mia? Do you have to stop even for a couple of minutes, or did you train her to follow you when she takes long? I am trying to give her treats outside, but she gets easily distracted (she could come to me a couple of times, but sometimes she won't even take the treat). Also, one more question, how do you keep Mia on your shoulder? Mine can stay on my shoulder for quite some time, but as soon as she spots something or she gets scared, she just hops down and goes wherever. Anyways thank you for your awesome videos. Keep it up!

My boyfriend and I want to be able to take our cat to go on hikes. We think he'd really enjoy it in the long run. He used to have a sizable backyard to go run around in and now he just had a very very small balcony. How can we get him okay with both the harness and car rides? How do we get him to have the right associations? It's also fall here. It'll get into winter soon enough. Smokey is actually relatively okay with snow so long as it's not melting. How can we dress him? Thanks so much!
