Should I walk my cat on a leash? This question got stuck in my head after a random man yelled at me to get a dog instead. While walking a cat is enriching for both you and your cat, there's a handful of pros and cons we need to consider. In this video I go over the pros and the cons of leash training your cat.

I walk my cat everyday and here are some of the benefits I have seen 1. He's so happy to go outside and just explore 2. It's more natural then staying inside all day 3. It's safer then just letting him out without a leash 4. I have seen a huge improvement in my mental health though the bonding of walking my cat and just getting outside more 5. I love showing off his tricks to people

It depends how long these walks are. I always have a PAC sack up top of my shoulders. It’s just a stand pack a child carrier type pack where they can get resting too. Your cat does need short, walks here and there, but not large walks when you’re taking a miles miles then it’s for you not for your cat and I own exotic cats Another thing I want to express is your cat on vitamins and lysing

Someone said the exact same thing to me, "You should get a dog" I walk my cat every day, its part of our routine. Some days she rides on my shoulder while I ride my electric skateboard. We've been walking every day for more than a year and she can go anywhere with me. It took some time before she gained as much confidence as she has now, but its worth the effort. I've used apple cider vinegar with water sprayed on her coat to prevent ticks/fleas, seems to have worked. The bond I have with my cat, Laana, is very unique and alot of it has to do with going out for adventures together. After the winter, she stopped going into heat, its been more than 4 months! Not that it caused any issues, just made her want to go outside more. She sleeps with me, now, that she's not interested in tomcats. She's also become extremely caring.

:) Cats do not undergo menopause, and a cat that has not been spayed will continue to be fertile and produce kittens throughout her life.! I never heard of this before! Interesting. Did you neuter her?

@@OutdoorBengal Nope, not going to get her fixed. My ex and I adopted a stray cat, years ago. We named her Daisey. We'd feed her under the porch and one day she came pregnant and happily moved in. She gave birth to several kittens but only 2 survived. After that she stayed moved in but never went into heat again, despite hanging out outside regularly. This was my first experience where I found out that a cat can choose not to go into heat. Now, with Laana, I think the reason is because going into heat was a bit stressful. There is a neighbourhood bengal that she was interested in, but she lost interest around christmas when it got really cold outside also the path we meet him on was frozen with 2 inches of ice (-20 celcius is too cold, -14 is okay for her). She was very driven, every morning she would want to go see if he's there. After a sort of depression for the month of January, she turned her affection towards me and expresses herself to me with confidence. She's definitely changed her interest, and as such doesnt feel the need to go into heat. She's only 1.5 years old, so I'm certain it doesnt have to do with old age. I can see she's still just a little girl and is experiencing the world for the first time in different ways. She tried picking up one particular tomcat for 8 months, and that didnt work. He seems very rugged with a torn ear and missing most of his tail. She must think he's a handsome woodsman. Also, she hates other cats unless they're bengals. Not sure if that has something to do with it. Asian leopard cats are in competition with jungle cats and other cat species, so I can kindof see where that comes from. I'll keep you posted if she goes into heat again. The snow has melted and the tomcats are spraying in the neighbourhood, but she's still not interested.

@@OutdoorBengal update on her heat cycle. Shes starting to show signs of wanting to go into heat, today. The past few weeks she had enlarged mammary glands, no big issue and it's also common. It's a reaction to a hormone, progesterone I think. Prevents her from starting her cycle, it's called mammary hyperplasia. Today her mammary glands are noticeably smaller. It's been almost 4 months since she went into heat. If she starts her cycle now that would be pretty normal for most cats. They dont usually breed during the winter, likely instinctual because of the cold and shortage of food. She hasn't fully gone into heat, but I'm pretty sure that in a couple days she'll be yowling at the door for a walk Update Day 2: We went for a walk this morning, which was pretty normal. Now she's pacing around the house meowing alot (not yeowling, yet). I'm both happy and not about her starting her cycle again. On one hand its good she's healthy and getting it out of her system, on the other I like how much we've bonded over the winter. She's become extremely affectionate, but I'm sure that wont go away. Sometimes she can be really bossy and hostile when having a heavy cycle (Only when we're outside for a walk, never at home). As I'm typing this she gave out one yowl/cry and now shes on my lap chriping at me. Tail right in my face. I love it! Update Day 4: She has not gone into heat. She had given a couple yowls, but stopped herself. She's head over heels in love with me. I spent the whole day away, yesterday, and was pretty sure she'd be in heat when I got home. Nope, just waiting for me. Update Day 8: She hasn't gone into heat and I've been working every day. Our relationship is great. She ate some plants I was growing, but she feels bad and wont do it again. I'm super lucky to have her Update 2 Weeks: No signs of going into heat. Weather hasn't been good lately, so we've only gone on a few walks. She's totally stable, I'm not even worried about her going into heat. She ate more of the plants while I was at work, but not all of them. Update, July 6th. She's had two heat cycles, both very normal. We both managed though them with ease because we're familiar with the goings on of being in heat. The mammary hyperplasia probably has a connection with why she hasn't had a cycle in 6 months. She got her vaccine booster and mandatory rabies vaccine booster. She's healthy, but too frisky for the vet to do any serious inspections.

As a cat rescuer, pls get her fixed. Think about what's best for her & other cats. There r countless homeless cats already suffering, why ADD to that, not to mention the unbearable pain of being pregnant/giving birth. Also, know the risk of taking ur cat out. Doesn't matter she's leashed. Inevitably she will get spooked & she will get herself out of the harness & run away - guarantee. Don't bother replying back if ur going to argue, cuz this Korean woman can tell ur stubborn & selfish.

@@OutdoorBengal - u should put a disclaimer about cat walking. Plenty of ppl have lost their cats while walking them. Once spooked, cats can get themselves out any harness. As a cat rescuer, this even happened to my cat. Thankfully, w/the help of animal rescue we were able to catch her. Also, u should have been more forceful in telling this selfish brat to get the cat fixed. I'm sorry to be harsh, it's just that I'm tired of irresponsible cat owners doing what they think is right instead of what's best for the cat.

I train service dogs professionally for Epilepsy and Diabetes alert and response. One thing I tell people that amazes them is that, cats actually do have the capability to become service animals, it's just that our laws haven't caught up to recognize them for it yet. A perfect example of this is Symie the Service Cat, a siamese cat trained for both seziure and diabetes alert. Symie can and does do everything a dog can do, including walking on a leash and heeling like a dog, and accurately alerting to both high and low blood sugar levels as well as predicting seziure activity. The benifit of having service cats recognized would be to help people who need alert animals, but are allergic to or afraid of dogs, just like Symie's owner. Cats are intelligent animals with the ability to form strong social bonds with their handlers, they are just as capable as their canine counterparts. It turns out that cats may actually be better than dogs at detecting certain kinds of sudden onset seziures, aswell.

@@OutdoorBengal No, never. She would never want to leave a scent unless she sprays. I've seen her spray maybe 5 or 6 times. First time she did it was right in front of another female cat in their own front lawn. Once, she peed in the flowerpot at the Vancouver airport. Otherwise, she needs to be in the comfort her bathroom. She will hold it for hours, there's no way I can convince her to pee outside.

We did it when we had our (first and last) indoor cat Charlie, a Siamese. Our vet recommended us to make him take some fresh air at least once a day to avoid the kitty going either depressed or insane and, living in the countryside, we have lots of space around our home. Concerned about potential fights with neighbors' cats (living outdoors), we used leash and harness to let him out within a safe zone and make him take a walk and satisfy his bodily needs. The neighbors laughed at us for months because he's been the first cat seen wearing a leash in the area, (and still bearing the record despite he left us in 2009), but who cares. He liked it.

Further afield where there's car noise and other noises, he has gone for short walks, however he goes on my lap inside my jacket where he sleeps comfortably, pops his head every now and then curiously...he definitely enjoys the wee adventures. I felt ppl thought i was crazy, when i told them, i was going to train him to be able to come out with us comfortably , soon after I was super happy to find your videos which gives me reassurance that I've not gone mad! and your videos have loads of amazing tips, Mia looks healthy and super happy thanks for sharing your adventures.

at the risk of being demonized or called cruel i just wanna say - i live in denmark and in an area with summerhouses so lotta nature and slow driving traffic and not a lot of it. my cat is an in and outdoor cat like most ppl keep their cats in denmark if they don't live in appartments. and i've watched a lot of youtube videos about catowners with cats that wake them up or get destructive or even aggressive. i've never had that problem or known someone with a cat with theese problems. they get to go out and be animals and hunt and roam. i know there's a risk of them getting hurt, but if the alternative is mentally not thriving i think a good life with a lot of room to be a cat is what i would choose myself. i've always had dogs and i never thought about walking a cat on leash, again because here cats just get let out. but i love the idea that even cats without access to a garden can get some fresh air and roam with their owner. as long as it's trained properly and safe ofc. every time i see someone walk their cat on leash in the bigger cities i get so happy that a cat gets to be outdoor that otherwise wouldn't. also the more we see it the more us dog owners get a chance to train our dogs to not care when we meet the cat walking on the street. you and mia are an inspiration to a lot of us and proves that cats can be just as good travelcompanions as dogs and enjoy the training and bonding just the same. thank you for opening so many eyes out there ^^

We found a stray kitten on a street and she was afraid to even go explore the yard. My parents thought "well, she gonna be indoor cat, no big deal". But in about half a year, we still decided to leash-train her due to some safety-concerns; carriers are great but in some specific circumstances you can't really rely on them. Even older people here are very chill about a cat on a leash, usually, since the past year showed how important is to train your indoor pet not to panic if you need to take them outside in emergency. Once she became older she started to sneak out of the yard and walk around neighbourhood picking fights with dogs, yeah... So I had to take her with me to live in apartment. And since she is already leash-trained, walking on a leash in nearby park is the safest way for her to enjoy exploration - no dog harmed xD

I do say walk your cat maybe every second day I own big cats. My cats are close to 20 pounds maybe a little over so I do suggest people to walk them but I have some people that over walk them. They walk them twice a day this is not good for your cat, they lose too much weight so I suggest have a backpack. Let your cat stand or sit on top of the backpack for one of those walks. If you think you have to walk them twice a day or even more than three times a week so that way you’re getting the exercise you need because obviously that’s what you want is the exercise and you’re using your cat like a dog Does expose them to unfamiliar ground so I do suggest when you bring your cat home have a nice washcloth wash his paws make sure it’s clean. I used to do the same thing with my dogs. Make sure their paws are clean but a little bit of water and they get them used to in the habit you don’t run with your hands all over town or your bare feet and not wash them do you? Do revolution because there is tons of fleas inspect them for any ticks tick remover if you want your cat to have that much exercise and do the physical challenge, they need to do them make a patio a large one for the rest of the times of the week that way they can get sunshine at their level and make sure it comes to where they can go inside the house and make sure it has a shelter top on it so they are not getting too much sun. Make sure that two sides are blocked out On the sun side If you look at Rhonda Sinclair on RU-vid, you will see all of my cat videos of my cats in case some people are wondering about it but yeah if you’re gonna walk your cat that much get a dog

I've been taking my cat Houdini out on a lead in my local area for around 4 months with no problems.. Last week he saw a lot more cats outside not on leads and he seemed annoyed he was on a lead. He would play with the cats which sometimes turned aggressive. When I tried to pick him up to take him away from the other cats he started trying to bite and attack me. This got worse and he now does it when no cats are around and its time to go home and he refuses to go home, I can't pick him up as he just attacks me. It only started last week and I have no idea why his outdoor behaviour has changed so much in a short space of time, other than he's jealous of other cats and wants to be free. Do you have any advice on how to fix his behaviour so I can handle him again outdoors?

Walking safely cats especially bengals are good until the owner is not forcing them to go out. Many cats are good with the balcony or protected garden. Please do not force your cats when you see they are not enjoying it. I’ve seen million of videos saying “how to walk your cat on leash” and then extremely stressed cat being close to panic. And remember when you will teach your cat going out and he/she loves it - do it regularly, there is no way back.

Did she cry/meow at the door at the beginning, after taking her out to adventures?

She even meows for me to let her out on the hallway if we are in NY. I have set up schedules and never let her outside the schedule and helps her to know when to expect to be let out. Good luck!

The dog comment is ignorant & stupid because the leash is like for a dog, to control & keep Her safe💙

Absolutely! Any cat can learn! I started training Mia when she was 12weeks old. I started with some easy tricks like come when called and finger targetting and got to more complex tricks once she was comfortable with those. You can find more about it in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YxxCqtJ93zU.html

As long as your cat is happy ,and has your supervision then she’s fine, you can simply tell those idiots to shut the f#ck uo and mind their own business. I personally would, also don’t believe anything on those weird websites because everything on the internet will say one thing and the complete opposite on another site, all because it’s different peoples opinions and mean nothing , every animal and human have different personalities

As if dogs were the only pets that should be outside lol. People make no sense lol. I Love all animals but a lot of dog people are toooo self righteous. ❤️

hahaha totally... They get so entitled! The fact that taking a cat out takes more patience and empathy doesn't mean that cats don't enjoy it. Means that they do it on their own terms, and that's totally fine as well!

“Should I walk my cat on a leash” If your cat shows interest in outside, yes If your cat is afraid of outside, no It’s not a hamster that doesn’t understand life. And while Jenna Marbles walked her hamster on a leash for a video, that’s not the norm lol. But it’s so dumb people think cats are just “easy animals you ignore.” Like… no. That’s a life that lives with you, and wants to enjoy life

Cats are like humans, all different. If your cat continues to not enjoy going outdoors then don’t. I would never let my cat roam wild again after one of my much loved cats was poisoned with antifreeze. So they can’t tell me it’s better to let your cat roam wild. Ive also seen so many cats missing on Bengal uk group they obviously get stolen if let out to roam.

Yea you can walk your car nothing wrong because cats will like to go outside it’s safer and they will be happier they see new things so yeah if they like to go outside you should walk them

That’s the dumbest thing ever heard I too have a Bengal and been walking him on leash since he was fully vaccinated. Titus brings me the harness first thing in the morning to my bed

We let our cat out. We let them out if they want to and after they have enough they come back. We don't know where they went and for how long. My cats was always coming back but some died when they where outside but that's a risk we have to keep. Our cats also don't really like to walk on a leash and so for us it's perfectly fine to let them out for themselves but I can always understand people how walk there cats. In big citys or so is it a good thing I guess and every cat is different so do what's best for your cat :)

As a cat rescuer, pls know the risk of taking ur cat out for a walk. Doesn't matter whether the cat is leashed. Inevitably ur cat will get spooked by something, someone, some sound, etc. Spooked cat can get out of any harness & run away. So many ppl have lost their cats this way. This man's cat is unusual, but there's a Korean saying, "Even monkeys fall from trees."

If the cat regularly goes out, it gets used to noises and views. My Charlie was more scared of people than outdoors noises and even wild beasts (I live inside a national park and there are lots of boars in the surroundings).
