In the 70s my mother bought an outrageous sofa from the retailer bargain basement. It was classic shape, but LONG. Upholstered in buffalo check *silk*: jewel colour greens, blues & golds. As a teen I was dubious! But it was incredibly durable, looked striking & beautiful in every home she lived in, and lasted the rest of her life. She had great mid-century taste & an artistic design esthetic. Thanks for sparking that happy memory Baiyina! 💖

You’re so right about small rooms. The tv designer Christopher Lowell said small spaces should be like jewel boxes. Bigger things really work. Tiny things make it look like a miniature doll house.

My friend has a blue one. When he told me he had ordered a blue sofa, and then it was velvet, I admit, kinda cringed & It looks great!!! Has held up for several years and still working for them.

I kept flip-flopping between a navy blue sofa and a white one...I ended up choosing navy...but I plan on getting custom-made white slipcovers eventually. That way, I can have a navy blue sofa during fall/winter, and a white slipcovered Pottery Barn looking sofa during spring/summer.

Yes to this!!! There's a saying in Spanish: rules were made to be broken. My '70s modern apartment's most notable architectural feature is that the windows in every room are positioned in a way that makes these walls asymmetrical and, for quite some time now, I have been embracing the look by arranging the furniture in ways that either showcase or mimic this, because I've come to love the quirkiness of it. Painting white (or beige or any other neutral color) small spaces is another design rule I've been, consistently, breaking my whole adult life. I have never lived in a neutral space or had a neutral sofa. Oh, and the new black and white bathroom (my sister's pick, not mine) has graphite gray walls and ceiling...I was a bit scared of painting the ceiling in such a dark color but it looks fantastic!

I agree with all of these, especially painting the ceilings. Even the pros try to get you to use boring flat white paint. I've always loved bringing attention to the ceilings. 👍👍

Comment from previous video. I agree with you on not caring for Grommet Curtains! At times I have used the bottom hem as the top, cut off the grommets and used as the bottom hem. Works well if your curtains length allows.

Love your casts!! I would like to see the rooms that you are describing for longer views. The eye also needs relief from seeing you at times. I need to look at the room carefully without seeing you. Then when the camera comes back to you, it's such a nice surprise. Your voice is very strong and clear and pleasant. You don't have to be on screen all the time

I’m considering a terra cotta/ cognac color couch and a dark turquoise / saturated color accent chair. Using that color wheel which is an easy way to find contrasting colors that just work. Hoping the result makes my great room a bit more interesting.

Thank you! I love watching your videos! I don't know why people turn into haters when watching design videos. Yes, one should do what they want in their own space, but designers have more knowledge and have tips that can actually help because they are schooled/have experience in this! If you're just going to see it as "pretentious bullshit" then you likely don't understand design as a creative art form and will end up doing what you want regardless bc you think you know better, So there's no need to post unappreciative hate comments. 😒🙄.

I love learning about design principles, especially scale. I used to line up small and flimsy furniture against my walls (the student apartment phenomenon) and I’ve been learning to incorporate larger pieces even in smaller spaces. It’s so weird how my giant coffee table somehow opened up my relatively small living room, as did adding a recliner when I didn’t think I had room for a chair!

In our living room we have a rust colored sofa, my floor is also rust colored.. however my walls in that room are a teal ‘ish blue. I also have a rug which I fought for that is off white, gray and tan. I want to tone down the room and I feel like it needs to start with the sofa. We have loved the color for years but need a change. Anytime we redo a room I am so drawn to colors that I tend to go to far. 😂 I’m hoping to find that balance at some point. Thanks for these tips. We have painted our rooms so much over the years but at least we have experimented.

Great video. I love a home that is well designed, but also very livable and inviting. I don't want a space that feels too perfect to use or mess up. I wish more people would design with practicality at the forefront, versus trying to make it look like a magazine home to post on social media. My theory is collected decor that has a common denominator is more interesting than furniture store look. Also, I think large pieces in small rooms make the room look more important and dark/bold colors in a small space make it look grand.

My new chesterfield sofa with the tufted back is covered in a beautiful loosely botanical linen print in soft colors. It looks wonderful (and very different from what everyone else has) in my English country house style living room filled with antique Chinese porcelain and oil paintings. The sofa plays a large part in making me feel that I'm sitting in a lovely garden which is a joyful feeling.

I live in a small condo. In small rooms, rather than paint a dark colour to give the eye an impression of further space, I avoid overhead lighting. By using table lamps, the entire room is not illuminated so one does not get the sense of the entire limitation of space. You do not see the boundary of all 4 walls simultaneously. The area where you are positioned is well lit, but the space beyond could go to infinity. It works well. As soon as I turn on the overhead light, my space feels considerably diminished.

I have a charcoal gray loveseat and I am bored. I threw a colorful fabric remnant piece over the seat part, and I have 8 pillows at the back and sides. Five of the pillows have kilim covers (all from Etsy shops in Turkey) in various colors. I ordered fabric swatches and am considering ordering a loveseat covered in mustard microfiber or velvet. I don't wear yellow or mustard, but I like those colors for furniture.

Thank you so much, I love your advise!! Forgot to mention regarding ceiling color I had the ceiling in both bathrooms painted 50% lighter than the walls and the wood work is a cream color!!! Very dreamy it makes those rooms seem larger. I had a man tell me that he could LIVE in my half bath!!! lol I plan to do the same in the kitchen!!! Cheers

Always have debunked those tips, especially hanging art at eye level! I am 5'2, one would think that some sort of goblin lived in the home if I hung it based on my sight-line! LOL I go with hanging art in accordance with top of my door casements and most the time I eyeball it. I said scr*w it, I'm buying what I want. It's going to be deep and color saturated and tactile. So I bought a navy velvet 4 seater sofa. After a year of COVID and sheltering at home people are being vaccinated and we can entertain again, so a week ago I ordered a teal green velvet 3 seater sofa in the same style so we have plenty of room for guests. It's going to look awesome.

Do you have any videos on lighting? If not, can you do one?. I have two connectors on my hallway ceiling--- between bedrooms--- about 2ft apart that require hard wire... Random question but you always talk about sourcing furniture from craiglist and vintage stores but ... How do you get them home?! I don't have a big car or know anyone with a truck. Do you have a delivery service? Rent a truck just for this? Seems like a huge hassle!

If you paint the inside of your front door one color, can you paint the other side that faces the street another color? Or is that weird and busy? 🤣 My front door is red facing the street but I would love to paint the inside black. As I type it, I’m thinking no. Maybe I should paint the whole thing black. Can’t do red....nothing inside my house is red.
