Or people could learn to change oil at proper intervals to prevent wear and not cause problems in the first place. In a VQ you shouldn't ever go past 3-4k miles and always use high quality advanced full synthetic oil. Always premium gas. My last went over 300k miles, not a drop of burning or leaking oil when I sold it. Probably still out there on the road if it didn't get trashed by the new owners.

I'm a professional electrical engineer and I agree 100%. Sometimes engineers do ridiculous things just because they can, not because they should. Actually, it's more likely marketing is pressuring engineering to produce something "appealing".

Hey Randy what does an electrical engeneer have to do with car engines,I also like Scotty,most of the time I agree with him but this time he might be wrong.if we were to listem to you guys out there we'd be still riding horses and horse drawn carts. Nissan has been testing this new technology for more than four years,don't you think the should know better than destroy their own name and brand,especially with so many cheap good engines in the market today.Scotty could wait a couple of years to seee what happens with this type of engine and do you know why I say this because what would happen if this engine turns out to be a wonderful piece of technology...just my grain of salt.
@RandyLott
@RandyLott 6 лет назад
Electrical engineers have a whole lot to do with engines now-a-days. Nothing happens in a vehicle without the ultimate "permission" of the ECU. Your engine RPM, fuel ratios, timing, and much more is determined by the electronics systems. Modern cars have literally dozens (maybe even 100+) input signals, such as - engine temperature, volumetric air flow, accelerator pedal position, fuel rail pressure, calculated engine load, engine RPM, air intake temperature, barometric pressure, evaporative system vapor pressure, exhaust gas temperature, oxygen sensor voltage, and a bunch of other calculated and directly read signals. The simple answer is - nothing happens in a modern car without intervention from the ECU. Electrical engineers are the ones who design these electronics systems. So, that's the answer.

Actually, Cadillac’s V8-6-4 was a very robust and reliable engine. The reason it failed is because the electronics didn’t exist at the time that were able to keep up with the rapid changes in displacement demand that were required to operate. The V8-6-4 engine, if given modern computer controls, would work fine today. It was an idea that was ahead of its time. As to GM’s modern displacement on demand engines, they are just as reliable as anything else out there. My Silverado’s 6.0 LS engine with D.O.D. is still going strong with zero problems after ten years. Most of what you say in your videos is spot on Scotty, but this one, not so much. But I’m still a big fan and I love your videos. Keep up the good work.

I love the 318 in my truck. Technically it's a 5.2 LA but dodge stuck with a reliable classic and made small changes to it. MFI, they changed the metallurgy to lighten the engine and components. She's got about 250k and all I've done were oil changes and tune ups. And the occasional sensor. She does burn a little oil but an old foreman of mine who is experienced with classic mopar told me the 318 always burned a little. That's why you do a walk around and check the fluids. I drove commercial so a pre trip is second nature to me but am a big believer in it. When I worked for a shop a few years ago I got a lot of return business from teaching some basic auto care to the customers.

Exactly, I got the feeling that Scotty is against all new technology because it's either harder to work on or more complicated. Well that's how technology works, it always gets more complex over time and if Nissan has their engines tested over a massive distance, I don't think they will be more unreliable than some of the shitty engines that are out there right now

Say what you want about Scotty, but over 93% of all Corollas are still on the road. My 96 has 339,000 miles all the while changing out minor things for wear and tear. Brakes ,timing belt,battery,etc. Problem with high end cars is that the average Joe thinks they can afford them and as soon as any little thing goes wrong they are hit with sticker shock. Personally, I cannot afford these cars and that's fine by me. People need to check themselves before they get into the expensive vehicles.
@lvr1028
@lvr1028 6 лет назад
Still not worth the risk when you can buy a well known reliable car with better gas mileage... and engineering explained is highly biased. There’s literally no reason why you should be a guinea pig for new technologies unless you’ve got plenty o money to throw away. There’s no advantage, you can buy cheaper, more efficient, well known reliable cars instead of trusting the words of infinity’s marketing department and engineering explained who probably got sponsored to make that infinity video to begin with.

You're a very down to earth kinda guy and your advice is sensible and wise. I much appreciate your advice. I wouldn't even buy a hybrid. Nice idea that they're thinking of innovation but in reality the standard basic automobile engine is best with some basic modification. These complex cars are great when they work but when they fail it's a fkn nightmare. Overly complex systems just make it much harder and more expensive to fix. My old mate has spent 15 thousand AUD on parts and labour fixing his Tiguan. Omg the first thing that broke was a brake caliper lol could you ever imagine breaking a break caliper? Then his DSG broke. They wanted 8000 AUD to replace it. He went to a different dealer and bought a second hand one. Then some other problem. Then something else went wrong with the AC. Lol he spent so much money I could buy a new car for what he paid out on on repairs. If I buy a new car it will be a Toyota Corolla. The one I have now has lasted so long. It had 175,000 on the odometer when I bought it and the gear box syncros were faulty ... I never fixed it, yet it's still going. These cars are incredibly reliable. Cheap to run and I hardly spend any money on it. Toyota Corolla is the best brand and model.

You always make sense to me. I found the Nissan engines to be super reliable, I had a SR20DET for a number of years with which I put bigger injectors and turbos on it and never a problem, even turning the boost up to 17 PSI to get about 380 HP out of it. I never once adjusted valves or anything, totally sealed for all the years I owned it.

You're just saying what's been said for longer than I've been driving. I'm 62. Never buy a first year production car whether it be a brand new model or a significant refresh with new technology because they almost always have their teething problems. Nissan's variable compression engine is definitely something new. I have to admit, I'm intrigued by the design. I hope it does prove itself, but it'll never do that if no one buys it, and therein lies the conundrum. Like you Scotty, I'm not particularly interested in being a guinea pig either. ;-)

This is why luxury car brands tend to have longer warranties. Also, customers of new luxury cars tend to lease, partially for this reason. Many luxury cars are based on high-volume, non-luxury cars these days, which helps the engineering be more reliable. Lincoln=Ford, Cadillac=Chevy/Buick/GMC, Acura=Honda, Lexus=Toyota, Infiniti=Nissan, Audi=VW. Often, the luxury model is 80%+ the same as the regular model, with tweaks to appearance, comfort, convenience.

When I learned about government incentives to mandate improvement in fuel economy, I wondered if they would consider all factors. Manufacturers saw it as solving two problems, for them. First, they could advertise better mileage for new vehicles. Second, their main competitor, old cars, would not be on the road for long because they aren't as durable and repairs are too expensive. In the end, government was completely blind to the extra emissions needed to make new cars! The real solution is to expose how some vehicles depreciate over time, then let market forces do the rest.
@ElectronicsForFun
@ElectronicsForFun 6 лет назад
aren't as durable? older cars are WAY more durable than the crap you buy today. engine blocks used to be made out of cast iron or cast steel, now they are made out of aluminum which is brittle and probably one of the worst metals to use for something that constantly goes through rapid temp changes. and cars today have crumple zone which do keep you safe but the car is literally designed to fall apart in a crash. where as with an older car it will most likely survive, you probably won't but at least you car will. yeah cars today are not durable at all, they are made out of weaker metals and have cheap plastic interiors. too expensive? how much do you think a carburetor costs? it's a lot cheaper than fuel injection. a good old fashioned american V8 is probably one of the easiest engine to work on whether it's a 350 small block, a 383 stroker, a 460 big block, or a 426 HEMI. auto parts manufactorers make parts for all of those engine infact some of those engines are still in production today. the MoPar 318 was first introduced in in the late 60's and chrysler used them all the way up until the early 2000's. they came in dodge challengers, dodge dokota's, and the plymouth duster. although there are no modern MoPars running a 318 you can still buy them brand new today. and you can actually get a long block 318 cheaper than a 4banger for a camry.
@idmhead0160
@idmhead0160 6 лет назад
The real solution is the electric motor. Greater than 80% efficient rather than 20% for an ICE. And a much simpler design. Scotty is right, they shouldn't waste time on over complex design. That is true in general for ICE.
@idmhead0160
@idmhead0160 6 лет назад
BTW, maybe you are right, the government should have had the market decide. And GM wouldn't be around anymore. They were busy building Hummers when the market tanked in 2007 and needed a bail out. And BTW global warming is real. As far as I'm concerned, non-hybrid vehicles should be banned. It is idiotic for people to be driving around WASTING resources like they do. Everyone is driving a huge truck or SUV. Well, you idiots are going to get a reality check in the coming years after global warming kicks in some more. All time heat records are being set all over the planet right now including in parts of the US.
@ElectronicsForFun
@ElectronicsForFun 6 лет назад
idmhead0+ but electric motors lose torque as the battery drains, but gas motors don't. and gas cars can be modded like crazy when electric cars can't. ICE are much more efficient when it comes to energy usage, gasoline weighs a lot less and will get you further than a battery would in a car horsepower for horsepower. and lets not forget that electric motors don't last nearly as long. l mean truckers put millions of miles on their rigs with the original engine, but a tesla can't go 50,000 without 500 drivetrain swaps.
@idmhead0160
@idmhead0160 6 лет назад
freezeme360 IMHO obtaining the resources for batteries and then recycling them is better than burning oil putting greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Global warming is real and needs to be addressed. It has been known about since the 80s and virtually nothing has been done about it. We need to get off of fossil fuels and switch to renewable energy. Wasting time on ICE is just that, a waste of time. And as I mentioned, an ICE is around 20% efficient. That's why you're engine gets so hot. Tons of wasted energy in the form of heat. Check fuel economy gov, they talk about it there.

Everyone that's trying to do some improvement to internal combustion engines generally try it by doing something to the cylinder heads, and leave the bottom end untouched. Why? Because in the lower end the forces involved are much higher, and whatever you do to the top end, it's going to be smaller, easier, and cheaper to engineer and manufacture.

Interesting view of Nissan as a company. Yes I can agree they have a few pitfalls (their CVT's especially but nobody has really made them well). However, I would argue that their historical track record is actually very good. Their 6 cylinder engines have all been huge icons in the automotive world (The RB, VG, VQ, & VR engines). They are all known to hold up extremely well (250k+) even when having the snot beat out of them. In the past they had some great 4 cylinder offerings but we haven't seen any exceptional examples of those since the 90's with the SR and the KA. I am interested to see how this new engine stands the test of time, it could be a huge success in allowing efficiency and performance to coexist. varying the compression ratio gives the car an interesting ability to be extremely efficient at low boost (high CR) and still be able to tolerate high boost pressures (low CR) without detonation allowing for bigger HP numbers. The new design does allow for more points of failure, however if it is designed as well as the rest of the engine internals it hopefully will not be an issue.

I cannot comment about the American market or vehicles , i live down under. New vehicles here look good, go well, plenty power, good economy, all the bells & whistles but i don't think their made to last. Engine parts made of plastic ,front timing covers, inlet manifolds, tappet covers, engine sumps, water pumps, thermostat housings, oil filter housings, I've see broken plastic suspension components, leaking plastic fuel tanks where the top half of the tank is fused to the bottom half of the fuel tank, software problems. Most new vehicles come with 5 or 7 year warranty, road side assist, nationwide towing, capped price servicing. When the warranty runs out, go buy/lease a new vehicle. Manufacturers don't release product information to independent mechanics even though they are supposed too. Independent mechanics don't know how to do repairs or understand repair protocols, they are been pushed out because of the advancement in technology. Continuous new technology upgrades in every new model the aftermarket cannot keep up. Consumers realise this now , don't really repair anymore if its a major expense. Your average person on the street is becoming less interested in 2nd hand vehicles because their scared or they knew someone with a horror story of an expensive repair bill outside of warranty. Like washing machines, fridges, etc... when they have problems, buy new. New industries created, others become extinct. The wheels of progress move forward, embrace it or long for the past, your choice. Happy motoring folks.

Smokey Yunick had the right idea in the early '80s. Near adiabatic engines. His beast was a 150 CuIn V4 with no cooling system producing 345 BHP @ 7500 rpm. On regular pump gas.

Great video, great information and advice. Your honesty about these crappy automakers and their junk cars are fun to watch. I work on cars and agree with everything you say.

I had no problems. Great video as always. I love your stuff! I've learned a lot watching you. Keep it up! I agree with you, It's amazing how many people still stand by Nissan like they still made 80's era Datsuns. I wouldn't waste money on a Renaultsan today. I've also become very wary of "new" designs. Why not just use proven Hybrid technology?

My step-father had the Cadillac 8-6-4 engine he carried around clean spark plugs and change 4 of them every couple hundred miles. He even bought a spark plug cleaner.

@@xXxUrbanNinjaxXx don't forget what happened to Toyota few years back when they came under severe criticism for the clutch/brake issue in their cars & ppl died in the United States I think. If that issue would have come in other countries worldwide they wud have gone in huge losses ..but somehow they managed to save their @$$e$ 🤣🤣🤣
