I couldn't sleep, and found this video at 3AM. I was high on drowsiness, so I started making these sounds rather loudly without realizing it (My tired brain's logic was that my headphones would somehow make my voice quiet). My wife woke up and asked what the hell was wrong with me, but instead of replying with an actual answer, I just responded with "uh uh uuunhhhh" and started wiggling around like a worm trying to dance. Now she can't stop laughing at me every time I try to ask her a question, or just talk in general, and it's all your fault Update: I just came back to this comment after a whole year. I forced this unfortunate incident out of my mind and didn't even realize my comment got any attention until multiple people started ominously commenting "Uh uh uhhh" on my video, and someone linked me to this. Glad I could make you people laugh.

Your singing style as an adult, depends mainly on the songs you sang along with and liked growing up. If you grew up listening to a lot of acoustic guitar singers, you're probably not going to have a big vocal range. If you grew up trying to imitate Celine Dion and Whitney Houston, then generally you'll end up having a big voice and vocal range. In the music business, however... it's 98 percent luck, and only 2 percent talent. Record companies just want you to sell records whether you have an amazing voice or NOT. (Taylor Swift. Katy Perry... both worth millions of dollars).

The fact that EVERYONE CAN SING! Bad singers need to practice in order to develop a good MUSCLE MEMORY. One of the key to good singing is to 1.Warm up voice properly everyday and you will see an improvement, I've been doing warm up for weeks and I was surprisingly happy for the result, vocal warm up really helped my voice and it keeps growing, after warming up I can easily sing than before because before I have so much tension than these present days. My bad habits are slowly going away. After so much research I found out that proper warm up grows good muscle memories-reason why people tries harder in removing the bad habits because they are used to how they sang(Muscle Memory). Guys I recommend you to warm up everyday even if you are not practicing. TRUST ME WARM UPS WILL HELP YOU EFFECTIVELY !BE PATIENT WITH EVERYDAY WARM UP YOUR VOICE WILL ADAPT NEW MUSCLE AND ACTIVITY AND WILL FURTHER BUILD A GOOD MUSCLE MEMORY! Further keys: 2.Support your voice with a proper breathing, it would really help guys! It removes tension, breathe from your diaphragm. 3.Massage your throat, cheeks, jaw and exercise your tongue because a usual tension happens when your tongue is not relaxed and its root are raising allowing you to sing forcibly with effort. Do lip trills from your low comfortable range to your highest range(REMEMBER NEVER FORCE YOUR VOICE) YOU WILL NOTICE YOUR RANGE WILL INCREASE! 4.Remove too much anxiousness because anxiousness can trigger the bad singing voice. 5. If you have bad diction, work for it because diction and pronunciation adds impact to the way you sound. 6.Learn to sing with runs, riffs, melisma, vibrato and other vocal styles because it makes your voice more beautiful and designed but keep it simple and beautiful don't overdo them because you may ruin the song. 7.Never practice with a very loud volume, practice singing with a medium volume but better to sing softly for starters! 8. GET A VOCAL COACH FOR THE FULL TIPS AND TECHNIQUES. WITH ALL THE FUNDAMENTALS AND WITH ALL THE TIPS ABOVE, BUILD THE SUPERB MUSCLE MEMORY FOR THE BIGGEST KEY TO SINGING SUCCESS! TRUST ME GUYSSSSSSSS THOSE TIPSSSSS ABOVE REALLY HELP, ESPECIALLY THE WARM UPS, SEARCH FOR WARM UPS AND TRY IMITATING THEM, FIND THE MOST COMFORTABLE WARM UP AND IF THE WARM UP IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUR RANGE? LOWER OR HIGHER IT, THE CRUCIAL THING IS THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WHILE WARMING UP! AND I AM VERY HAPPY FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF MY VOICE RIGHT NOW AND I AM INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN AND GROW MY VOICE. BE PATIENT GUYS PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, BETTER DAYS WILL COME! :D GOOD LUCK AND HAVE A NICE DAY!

Guys you need to learn to sing in mix voice it is very crucial (Exaggerated) It helps me so muccccccccchhhhh! Sing with a very bratty sound like a nay-nay, like a very annoying nasal sound then gradually decrease a bit of it and apply it to singing, remember to forward the resonance or the air into the mask or into the pharynx( try imagining the air going out to your mouth) as you go higher add more bratty to avoid disconnection. TRY SEARCHING FOR MIX VOICE.

This is a good idea for helping people learn the basics. I've found a lot of people lack closure as they go higher, they tend to thin out and use excessive breath. How I get them to find closure, which may be of help to you, is to get people to talk on pitch. It sounds silly but most people talk with really good closure and it's an incredibly relaxed sound too. I reckon if you combined the two concepts you've got a winner. Great video Carl. 🤘🏻
@cwehden
@cwehden 7 лет назад
like 90% of people learning to sing need to get better at this, I include myself, this and pitch adjustment are the bedrock of singing all singers need to master these skills.

When crossing over from your chest voice into your head voice, vocalize with staccato, and good breath support throughout a scale (in your range). Make sure your staccato is solid. It helps you get the more "chesty" timbre (tonal quality) in your mixed voice and head voice that we are trying to achieve here. It simply trains you to let your vocal folds open and close more comfortably, and use less compensation from other muscles to get that tone out. Staccato and Legato are key words that should be clarified here. Using proper and more recognized terminology would be professional. You will be more successful as a vocal coach if you do. Thanks for the tips!

Not a great fan of squeezing directly vocal chords....if you focus on vc you start activating the muscles of larynx wich is totally wrong if you want to sing with freedom. That’s why belcanto says forget the larynx, you dont have. Just practice resonance and dyafram

Came back to this video after almost a year when I remembered this exercise. I tried it again last night and I realized I was closer to doing this exercise correctly compared to a year ago and I really starting dialing it in and now I already feel like singing is so much easier and much more relaxed and the power is still present. And the more I dial it in the better so I will continue to use this method because I feel it really works! Thank you and Cheers!

This is pontification not voice instruction. "If you can't do this, you can't sing?" You're job is to inspire and empower, not discourage. This is just flat out wrong and misleading. Don't look for me to comment other than on this video. I had to say something. You're so hung up on pulling chest voice and compression and these are not negatives if you know how to teach them.

It seems you’re just talking about learning to stay in your full voice when you go up in a scale as oppose to going into falsetto. This is really just a stylistic choice rather than right or wrong, once you’ve attained both skills, of course. Baritones and low tenors especially will utilize the falsetto range because it’s easier for them to sing those high notes as opposed to squeezing for the full voice. Now, there is a difference between a thin wispy falsetto and a nice strong one, but I didn’t hear you clarify that. I think your advice is solid, as far as building a strong voice that can belt out the notes. I just don’t think you should steer your students from using falsetto considering it’s a great tool for a singer. “Squeezing” or going to falsetto can make the difference between a harsh, out of place vocal or a smooth, nuanced vocal, depending on the particular song. Just look at Muse’s Soldier Poem. He almost always goes to falsetto in that song, even breaking his voice completely at one point to make the switch to falsetto. The song calls for it. It seems that by your interpretation of singing properly he’s doing it wrong. I disagree. As long as the spot where you’re singing from stays in the middle of your throat (ie where it feels right) you’re doing it right. That’s the real trick. Learn to keep the “strain” in the middle.
@cwehden
@cwehden 6 лет назад
cbrooks0905 you haven't looked into my stuff enough to fully understand, I agree with everything you've said here
@cbrooks0905
@cbrooks0905 6 лет назад
Carl Wehden, I see. As long as you don’t leave out the beautiful falsetto, especially for us lower guys. 🙂 You’re advice about “ the squeeze” is definitely solid. When I was teaching myself to sing I found the middle range was the most uncomfortable to hold that squeeze. Comfortable lows, no problem. Stupid sounding highs, not too hard (though funny sounding), but that middle range, that’s the hardest range (was for me anyway) to build that strength. The middle is where it wants to break the most. I’ve helped out some friends, and the middle range is almost everyone’s weak spot. Strengthen those mid note, and you’ll see your voice open right up. Anyway, thanks for the humble response. Keep up the solid work.
@cbrooks0905
@cbrooks0905 6 лет назад
Jakub Hladik, for me, it was two things. 1. Not avoiding it. It can be really easy to get in the habit of avoiding the spots which are uncomfortable. You’ll never grow that way. 2. Find singers to sing along with whom are in your tonal range and can do the thing you want to do (ie strengthen the middle range). I’m a low tenor, so Brandon Boyd from Incubus was a no brainer for me. He’s more of a power singer so he helps in all ranges regarding that, but he does that thing where he pushes his lower notes, even when he could soften the delivery for more comfort (think about the verses on Love Hurts for example). This results in a strong mid range, in my humble opinion. Admittedly, I’m not a coach, just a seasoned singer, so my knowledge on exercises and the such are limited. I go with the practice makes perfect and mimicry method. I’ve always practiced to different singers for different things. I wanted crazy vibrato, so I practiced to Muse. Radiohead helped me find my falsetto and pretty voice. Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson taught me range and and control. Mars Volta showed me how to sing like a girl. 😂. It’s all important is my point. This also helps with not adopting one style, like Adam Lambert, who I think sounds like a whiny Jeff Buckley. I know I’m long winded... Just Practice your weaknesses and they’ll get stronger. It’s almost impossible for them to not...
@cbrooks0905
@cbrooks0905 6 лет назад
I just want to reiterate that Carl is exactly right about “the squeeze”, and my intention was not to undermine that, or him as a coach. Honestly, it’s one of the most simple and solid advices I’ve heard vocal coaches give. In fact, he is the first one I’ve ever heard mention it. Most other teaches tell their students to avoid the tension. I think that’s a bit misleading. If you’re doing it right there’s going to be tension. It’s just a matter of where you hold it. Right about behind the Adam’s apple is where it should be. So, no matter if you’re singing high, low, or mid range you have to have the strength to keep the tension in the middle of your throat. Figure that out, as Carl mentioned, and you’re basically there. Past that, the hardest part of singing is putting soul into it. That takes vulnerability. That’s what separates the boys from the men.

I've taken for granted being able to sing fairly well, but like other physical abilities, being strong doesn't make you and athlete. Training and technique do. So I've been training with breathing and such. One Question Should I not be focused too much on control or pitch as much as just flexing the muscles and learning the technique? You can obviously carry a tune but you didn't seem concerned with your pitch.
@cwehden
@cwehden 6 лет назад
Pitch is one thing but often when learning or even working on coordination's generally you'll miss it or be lazy with it in order to gain a broader understanding of the underlying principles. Pitch is just one aspect of singing and in many ways the last thing a learning singer needs to worry about. It's very easy for most people to match pitches from the get go, the reality is other parts of singing are much harder to learn and develop for most people. Good technique leads towards easy clean and simple matching of pitches.
