I've seen lots of beginners trying to go higher by increasing volume substantially; this is a huge mistake and if you find yourself doing it, just stop! The right muscles need to be used, but in pop singing that's not common (as it is in opera). The "trick" is not to sing with high volume, IMO, after learning opera type technique.

But while singing the upper octave notes for example from A#4 - 5th octave, volume will be high. My range is G2-E5 chest voice G2-A4 head voice A#4-E5, falsetto upto A5. Whenever i sing the upper octave notes, i feel like my volume is high, you can't sing these notes without an open throat. Its my opinion. I hope you can shed some light on this.

This what the vocal community refers to as "sirens" you start low, and scoop up to high and back down again, mimicking the sound of a siren. It's how we help young boys and sometimes girls struggling with their voice change find their head voice. The head voice is what we switch to as we get higher up so we're not carrying our diaphragm or "chest voice" too high which causes the vocal chords to vibrate too hard and larynx to become horse and permanently damage the voice. It's using the space inside of your mouth to amplify and project your notes :).
@billrogers5219

That's fantastic. Extremely helpful. Now I can glide up into the fifth octave using that gentle pressure and stay connected, without either pushing or slipping into falsetto. If you could do a video on the orderly next steps and exercises required to turn that slide into actual singing in that range it would be even more fantastic. Thanks so much.

Lol that's because most repertoire isn't sung that way, that "gentle pressure" won't magically turn into a powerful chest voice with time, cuz that's all it is, a gentle pressure.

Overtone singing is essentially singing multiple notes at once through a technique called firebreathing. Adding a large amount of breath and sort of humming at the same time as singing a note gives you a lower harmony
@joshbrucks
@joshbrucks 5 лет назад
@@Joeysub4 no. overtone singing is singing 1 note and manipulating, surprise surprise, the overtones with your formants. the top note is purely a harmonic overtone not a second note like in throat singing aka what you think overtone singing is. they arent the same thing.

I wanted to give you an answer, but I noticed you commented 3 years ago. But still I will do it for other people searching for an answer. Do 2 things: 1. Get hydrated. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day. Remember that your vocal cords need water from inside; I mean you must have water in your veins not just wetting your throat by drinking a few drops of water. 2. Not push for too high notes. Start from not very high notes like E4 to G4 (Wherever you are easy with) and then after getting a grasp of how it feels, then make it higher.

dimash does what this guy is doing then builds up a perfect sound and resonance on it and of course he has whistle range vocal cords but this trick is needed for whistle too.i went this same path thanks to suggestions on youtube and slowly build resonance into headvocie and whistle voice.but all guys here on youtube forget to say that you also need the vocal cords to be able to reach those notes, by technique you just free the notes from push and strain but the range cannot go up a lot you just sound good when you used to strain/push.it is not just technique to sing dimash or vitas you are born with those soft vocal cords...

Carl, I'm so grateful that you posted this video. The idea of focusing all the way down to the most elementary event of bringing the vocal cords together to make a tiny little sound with very little air pressure was a game changer for me. I spent some time one evening just lightly bringing the cords together and using just enough air to make a tiny little sound. Then I focused on generating a stable pitch with that tiny little sound. Then I starting sliding the pitch up and down. At low volume and very light pressure, almost no effort is needed to hit ridiculously high pitches. The simple exercise of isolating the cords and the small muscles that control opened my eyes to all the extra muscles that I've been unknowingly recruiting whenever I sing--especially when I approach my first break/bridge/passaggio. Now I'm beginning to understand what vocal teachers mean about needing to drop mass or weight from the voice when transitioning to the upper register. Thanks for helping me to achieve a long-awaited aha moment!

SWAZ Ballers I have the same problem, I’m extremely deep voiced and I just want to increase my range. Whenever I hit a remotely higher note (like even mid-baritone range) it just sounds like I lost my voice like I can’t hit it.
@traininggrounds9450
@traininggrounds9450 5 лет назад
@@Mellowlo Have you guys ever put a blade of wide grass in between your thumbs and then blown air in between the gap that is created from the two knuckles? I think cord closure is all about having the muscles keep a gap tight and firm enough so that the air doesn't bully it's way through and cause it to pop or crack. I think about the reeds on most wind instruments that are just two pieces of flat material that thins the air down passing through it and you get a high pitch sound. That's what I imagine when he talks about keeping the cord closed. Having a thin enough stream of air allows your muscles to learn the technique before you can sing it normally.

Basically your vocal chords are so stiff that they no longer vibrate. You can try to break through that like the video says by relaxing, not panicking, and trying the vocal fry. But there will be an upper limit no matter what you do.

I agree with you. It's all about not forcing and not singing with too much weight. I always warm up focused on release. I like to do sirens, baby cries and scales starting from the top and descend. Pentatonic scales also help me to release if I'm ascending. However, I try not to focus too much on singing perfect notes or specific notes when warming up. That gets me to obsess too much about pitch and I try control and manipulate too much. If I am flat and not released enough, I stop for a second, relax and resing the note or sound. One has to reset the voice and coordination because the coordination from the preceding notes transfer to the subsequent notes, hence we shouldn't have too much weight or tension. After a while, it gets easier to sing with one coordination and then mix it up on different notes to vary the dynamics and stylization. It really is about allowing the voice to do its thing without forcing it or straining.

How do I sing the high notes in my full voice? With this I feel like it just strengthens my falsetto and head voice and the mixed/chest connection. But if I want to hit higher notes as in rock songs is belting the only option?

why did you make a video about sing high, getting around the reach, without panic, and not demonstrate a final product. I get the aspect of a squeaky technique but that's not the end goal. Just curious as to why you wouldn't demonstrate what you would want people to achieve by practicing making sounds.

This was a lot of help! To hit those higher notes I would have to either engage in vocal fry (which lets me go super high but then I can't do anything Tenor-range or lower without having to disengage my fry) or I would have to sound super breathy, which makes it strained and if I try to go below G3 my voice cracks and I lose the breathiness, but it just sounds bad because I go from head voice to chest voice automatically. By the end of the video I was getting a feel for going high to low the right way, and I was even sounding decent without the breathiness, and circumventing the voice crack entirely when I use my vocal cords the correct way. Thanks again!

@firstlastqaz
@firstlastqaz 5 лет назад
As you breathe in imagine you are about to sneeze. you will feel the palate raise and larynx lower. (you can try a yawn reflex instead if it doesn't work, but don't do the yawn too strong--just the beginning of a yawn.) At the same time, keep the tongue relaxed and forward. If you feel the tongue going backward, it's the root of the tongue that's pushing the larynx down and that is not good.

yes the flat approach is right, think of all the notes on one plane, be above the voice, it's under you, I sing High C's all the time, no shove and push from under, it's on top, support your diaphragm but not lock. Staccato's are a nice approach 13 5 8, and slides, siren slides, yes its a mental concept. I am an Opera singer and have trained a long time under many teachers, but an easy approach is best and you have to sing several times a week , like any athlete practise right

Oh, my, god this tip is absolutely amazing. Bass here, D2-G4, A4 if it's humid. Falsetto to C5. One day of this brought me up to a F5 Falsetto and belting confidently at A4. I can't tell if my voice lacks elasticity but I find it hard to recover back to my lower register, even after practicing I can only sing back down to a insecure E2.. hmm... Subbing regardless.

I've been practicing this a lot, especially after you mentioned it in previous videos. Is it normal that, while i'm practicing this, my voice wants to jump from low to high or vice versa?
@cwehden
@cwehden 6 лет назад
At first yes this can happen, in fact the mid range can get really tricky once you find some of the right squeeze like this because all of a sudden it feels like 'so what do I do in the middle now?'. You have to gradually learn to transition from bottom to top without any sudden compression shifts, this is hard to do and takes time to learn and master but once you can do it well you won't have to worry about connection again.
@Coolcucumber2
@Coolcucumber2 6 лет назад
Carl John Franz wow thank you for the response! You are so awesome! Okay I'll keep that in mind and keep going. It seems like sometimes I can keep it comfortable and transition smoothly but other times it's a struggle, which lines up with what you are saying. Thank you for the videos and response! Cheers 😊

@diasdemierdiaz
@diasdemierdiaz 6 лет назад
Trust me I had the same kind of struggle. But let me tell you it’s all about the right amount of cord closure without any tensions. start from trying to hit A3 softly and then work your way up to higher notes. Another way is hitting the notes in a somewhat strong head voice (falsetto without air) and then carrying that sensation into your chest voice on the “ee” vowel as in sEEd.
@diasdemierdiaz
@diasdemierdiaz 6 лет назад
From what I hear, you seem like a Baritone but I’m a bit unsure. Also, keep your tongue always in the ng position and that might help you in opening up to F4/F#4.
@Bigasstbone
@Bigasstbone 6 лет назад
Yes I am a Baritone. My teachers says to keep the air up hi in the hard pallet and not to have tension in the neck. I've gotten better its just not very strong or powerful.
@diasdemierdiaz
@diasdemierdiaz 6 лет назад
Bigasstbone hmm I would have to hear you to inspect properly what’s going on in your voice. Maybe it’s your vocal cords not being strong enough to carry the note as of now and that causes too much of a heady sound. But don’t worry it’ll improve over time.
@diasdemierdiaz
@diasdemierdiaz 6 лет назад
Bigasstbone How are the notes for you below E4 though? The thing with me was though that my volume would be too much on the E4 before due to excessive air pressure but I learned to control it as my vocal folds got stronger and I adopted a brighter placement.

A high note doesn't necessarily need power Low and Mid notes need Power High notes need a regulated air supply also the power you refer to is not from your stomach , it's from your Diaphragm, BIG DIFFERENCE When someone punches you in the stomach, you don't tense up your stomach to protect you tense up your diaphragm and it goes hard
