Lyrics:
If you could hie to Kolob
In the twinkling of an eye,
And then continue onward
With that same speed to fly,
Do you think that you could ever,
Through all eternity,
Find out the generation
Where Gods began to be?
Or see the grand beginning,
Where space did not extend?
Or view the last creation,
Where Gods and matter end?
Methinks the Spirit whispers,
"No man has found 'pure space, '
Nor seen the outside curtains,
Where nothing has a place."
The works of God continue,
And worlds and lives abound;
Improvement and progression
Have one eternal round.

This song presents an amazing story arc. The first verse is a person lost in wonder, and doubting the divine; even depression due to how small he/she is on a cosmic scale. The 2nd verse is about the time that person decides to trust in faith, trust that there is a God even though there will always be so much we don't understand. The final act is how that trust and faith builds into confidence and assurance, and through that all things DO make sense. Beautiful poetry. Beautiful song!

Even though I'm no longer a Brighamite, I still consider myself as a Mormon and I'm always proud to be a Mormon. I still love this sacred hymn. I firmly believe in the plurality of gods, but I worship only the Holy Trinity. I'm a trinitarian Mormon who firmly believes in the plurality of gods. I'm a Mormon, I'm not a Christian, Christianity has been apostate for a long time.

Sorry if this post ends up being lengthy, but many seem to be wondering what this song means, so I would love to explain. It is an incredibly Christ Centered song. The term Kolob comes from The Book of Abraham in The Pearl of Great Price. Here are the key verses for understanding this song: Abraham 3:2-3 (God is teaching Abraham the order of the universe) 2 And I saw the stars, that they were very great, and that one of them was nearest unto the throne of God; and there were many great ones which were near unto it; 3 And the Lord said unto me: These are the governing ones; and the name of the great one is Kolob, because it is near unto me, for I am the Lord thy God: I have set this one to govern all those which belong to the same order as that upon which thou standest. Important details: 1) There are many stars. 2) God is the greatest. 3) Kolob, the star nearest to God, was appointed by God to govern all other stars. 4) There are other governing stars below Kolob. Now, here is the key to understanding this astronomy analogy that God is teaching Abraham. If you look several verses down, after God teaches the order of the universe, he then begins to teach the order of heaven. Abraham 3:21-24 (God is teaching Abraham the order of heaven) 21 I dwell in the midst of them all... for I rule in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath, in all wisdom and prudence, over all the intelligences thine eyes have seen from the beginning; I came down in the beginning in the midst of all the intelligences thou hast seen. 22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; 23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them... 24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God... (Christ) Important details: 1) There are many intelligences/spirits/souls. 2) God is the greatest; he rules over the heavens and earth. 3) Christ, who "was like unto God," was appointed as Savior and Redeemer. 4) There are other "noble and great ones" who are God's spirit children. Translation ----------- Kolob is symbolic of Christ. According to the dictionary, "to hie" is to "go quickly." Put it all together: "Hie to Kolob" means to speed to Christ or go quickly to Christ. The main point of Abraham 3 isn't the astronomy lesson. The main point is that God is trying to teach the eternal order of heaven to Abraham, a finite human being, using an analogy that Abraham might understand.

...and none of this fits with traditional Christianity. Sorry, but Mormonism is not Christian. We see this in the fact the baptisms of Mormons are not recognized by any Christian Church and Mormons do not recognize the baptisms of Christian Churches. I appreciate that Mormons have some understanding of Jesus...but it's not the same Jesus that Christians believe.

the original song this tune is from is called Star of the County Down. The tune was named KINGSFOLD after being adopted into Roman Catholic Hymnary, and was later taken and used for many hymns of denominations and cults. The original tune is not used, but the Christianized version in the hymns My God why have you forsaken me, I heard the voice of Jesus say, 7 joys of Mary, O sing a song of Bethlehem... etc.
@Wotsitorlabart
@Wotsitorlabart Год назад
The original tune is 17th century traditional English. The Irish song 'Star of the Country Down' uses the tune but the lyrics were written in about 1916. Ralph Vaughan Williams noted the song in the small English village of Kingsfold - hence the name of the tune. And not Roman Catholic but Anglican.

Then you know that Kolob is the planet that Mormons believe God lives on. A literal, physical place that the Mormon church believes Elohim literally lives on and can be seen in the night sky, but turns out with the advent of modern tech it was discovered to actually be a star and therefore obviously gaseous, not solid, and uninhabitable. That is theologically insane, but that is what they are singing about. All mormons need to repent and trust the Christ of the perfect Bible alone.

"Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity, Find out the generation Where Gods began to be? "Or see the grand beginning, Where space did not extend? Or view the last creation, Where Gods and matter end?" These lyrics are a wonderful example of why Christians reject the LDS church as being Christian. The Bible is very clear that there is only one God, unchanging through eternity. Even the Book of Mormon makes that clear. But at the very end of his life, Joseph Smith started teaching that there are a multiplicity of Gods, and that God was once a human and that humans can become a god by obeying the the laws and ordinances of the Mormon "gospel." Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Joseph Smith did not teach that there was more than one God. He never said that God was human or that humans could become "gods" by obeying his commandments. Jesus was human, though. By following God's commandments, we can gain celestial glory and eternal joy, not the status of "god." If you read this, thank you for your time and patience. You are an amazing person, regardless of what you believe.

Nick! Your voice and artistic production of this song are incredible. You are brilliant in making a modern rendition of this song. It is by far the quintessential poetic expression of LDS materialistic cosmology, which is summed up in the first lines - going outward at near infinite speed for all eternity, would you find the beginning generation of Gods (and the first creation) let alone the "last creation"? This helped me clarify by contrast the historical Christian cosmology which is that the One and only God, Himself (not matter created by Gods) is that ultimate Cosmological reality... The infinite wonder of Christianity is not when gods began but that if you could go back in time for all eternity, that He set His love on His Elect, from all eternity. Matter is not eternal (LDS Cosmology), the will and purpose of God are (historical Christian cosmology). Instead of your eternal destiny being to become a God in succession from Gods and procreating more Gods, and in that finsing wonder, the Christian paradigm is that our eternal destiny is to be His Bride and for Him to be our Bridegroom, and it is THAT reality, right now(!!!) that is the center of all eternity past and will be for all eternity future. Something to contemplate!

First of all, great job to Nick. From a musical standpoint this is very impressive. From a theological standpoint, however, this is very concerning (I'm not LDS btw). "Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity, Find out the generation Where Gods began to be?" To my LDS friends, I would implore you to please read Isaiah 43-44 and pray on that text. I hope you will see that there is only one God and he never began to be, but has been God from all eternity. Respectfully, Danny
@latter-daycanadian1341
@latter-daycanadian1341 7 лет назад
Danny Pry the verse is backed by the rest of the song. The question there "do you think you could ever see?" Is a rhetorical way of saying that no matter how fast you could go, whether you could even transcend all things you couldn't find these things.

I felt the Spirit so strongly when you were singing. Thank you for sharing your gift with me. I love the church and am always so happy when I see others sharing the light of Christ. Could you do The Spirit of God?

Bro what's your problem... If you don't like the song don't listen to it... If you don't like the church say it once. You commented several times over multiple months and come back to say the same things. Have some respect for what other people believe. We don't come telling you that whatever religion you are is "heresy and blasphemy". We believe what we believe, and you should believe in what you believe; Religion helps many people, whichever religion they are, so do not try to ruin another's happiness from which they found through their own experience. If you want to continue arguing, we will gladly talk once you've tried Alma's experiment, as mentioned in previous, higher up comments. Also, what religion are you? I am curious. I hope you have a wonderful day bro, remember, you decide your happiness, so decide to be happy : )

A beautiful rendition of a song that, strangely, seems to meet what Scientists have found about space. Energy, apparently, becomes so intense that all ways of measuring fail. Even light fails to maintain its speed. As an Evangelical, I accept none of the Mormon doctrine, but that does not detract from the beauty of this old English melody and many a rendition of it.
