The song tells of his own experiences. It's a love letter to his first wife when he saw the marriage couldn't be saved. He wrote it one after noon leading up to their separation. He imagined if they could read each other's mind what it would be like, and he admitted to his own mistakes. He realized the marriage was over. He told a story and I'm sure he was uncomfortable doing it but it seemed to help. I like his voice it's unique and you can tell in a word or two it's Gordon Lightfoot.
