I've heard many reactors say that in the songs immediately after Phil took over from Peter in Genesis he sounded like Peter. This is the first time I've heard anyone say Peter sounds like Phil listening to In Your Eyes. @@TIMBERFRAMER9 Yes and no. When Genesis hit the 1980s, they really went commercial (like so many others). I'd say from 1975 to 1980, Genesis had a lot of music that was still artsy and progressive like it had with Gabriel, but it wasn't very commercially popular.

When Peter left the band to have a solo career, the band elected Phil to come out from behind the drumkit and become the lead singer. If not for Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis, you probably would never have heard of Phil Collins.

Most of the Peter Gabriel era Genesis songs are part of my DNA having listened to them so much over the decades, and he will always be one of my favorite vocalists of all time. The reason that Phil Collins sounded so much like Peter initially, especially on the first album without Peter, is because Phil had to sing Peter's vocals many times during live concerts due to many of the costumes and masks that Peter wore that prevented him from singing. So, Phil basically imitated Peter during those songs, although Phil did sing lead on two songs during Peter's time with the band, my favorite being the beautiful "More Fool Me" from the fabulous "Selling England by the Pound" album. People also forget what a amazing drummer Phil was, as well.

I had the pleasure of seeing this show four times in 1993. I was at work picking up my check when a co-worker asked me if I wanted to go a concert that night. I said yes and then asked who we were going to see? She said Peter Gabriel. I was a DJ when I was in highschool and college and I went to many huge concerts as a radio personality for free. I had only heard Peter's hits but I liked the songs I knew. This show blew me away. It was the best sound and visual experience I had ever witnessed. I bought she and I a ticket for the show the next night and went to see it again. Then the band got sick and had to cancel a couple of shows, but they came back a few months later and we went to both of those shows. You can get a video of this show and watch it. I ended up buying all the Peter Gabriel cd's in the week after I saw the concert. And yes, it sounded THAT good live.

Peter put millions of his own money into world music, which Simon did not. @@patriciamcl54 Very true. In starting his WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) festival, he nearly went bankrupt. As you know, Genesis came in and held a fundraiser (Six of the Best in 1982) that got him out of debt. Those guys are true friends......even as Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 with hundreds of thousands of debt themselves. Of course their 'sudden' rise to fame with Phil singing lead and a huge hit in 'Follow You Follow Me' in 1978 didn't hurt.

I had the privilege of seeing Peter Gabriel three times, twice on the "So" Tour (at Joe Louis Arena & later that same year at Pine Knob) and once at the Palace on THIS tour (Secret World). During the "So" Tour he was still ending the show with "Biko" which was both heartbreaking and exultant. This, however, is the way he ended "Secret World" at the Palace. Each song had the effect of uniting the entire crowd and for just a few precious minutes you could feel how beautiful and strong humanity could be if only we were able truly come together on what things were important and what things WEREN'T. Best of all, it was not a forced unity, but a VOLUNTARY unity. What HOPE Peter and his friends were able to inspire. While a couple/few artists have nearly gotten there, I've never left any other concerts feeling THAT good before or since. So, YES, it was absolutely this good live at each show. What you need to know is that Peter Gabriel is not just a singer here but he is also heavily involved in how the whole thing is presented visually. His shows have always had a highly conceptual foundation that informs what you see. This tour was all about the horizontal plane with large round stage connected by a walkway to smaller one. It even had a conveyor belt in that walkway. The next tour (years later: Gabriel is notorious for taking very long to write and record new music) was the UP tour and everything was in a vertical plane and about showing things that were usually hidden. Still a round stage (revolving) in the middle of the arena but also stuff moving up, coming down from above. Band was dressed all in black, stage / camera crew wore orange overalls so you couldn’t miss them. At one point Gabriel and his daughter Melanie (who was doing backing vocals) were hanging upside down (and singing) above the stage. But with Gabriel the visual side never gets in the way of the music but actually reinforces what he is trying to get across.

Yes, if a Performer puts on a show, as well as a Concert, you get the full experience. I follow Chinese singer Hua Chenyu, and he Composes the music, plays instruments, lays down his own voice multiple times for backing track. On top of that he chooses the venues and designs the staging, lighting, "story telling". Every aspect comes out of his mind. Recently did "Sunrise Concerts" which STARTED at 3.00am so he and his fans could watch the sun rise together. 2 years planning, all from a comment by a fan on a live stream saying she wanted to see the sun rise with him, and the Martians (his fans). (He even holds Video gaming and Mahjong Competitions during Day Concerts, Birthday gifts if you prove your Birthday and lots more). Like Peter it is an immersive experience.

Gabriel is LEGEND. He is hardly known for his Genesis years. It was only a few, his solo career is most what he's known for and spans decades and albums. This tour - the Us tour, sold our coliseums throughout the US. I was there. One of the best live shows of my life. He is also one of the first artists that worked in-depth with musicians from all over the world - in particular Africa. He is one of the main reasons people started hearing African music / musicians. He created the WOMAD tour back in the early 80's. It used to be a touring festival that featured musical artists from countries around the world. You could hear a traditional Chinese musician, and then see a new U.S. band - like Arrested Development. And there were 10's of thousands of people there. I think one of the main reasons that a lot of people today don't know of Gabriel, is because he has long breaks between albums because he has other projects, and some of those are music projects that are not commercial radio oriented. He's quite intellectual and intelligent, he had a few projects involving technology and digital media even before that all took off. And he used to be very involved in philanthropic and advocacy efforts for different things. Checkout his song Biko. And BTW - He is nothing like Phill Collins. Phil is good and I loved him growing up, but he is pop and Gabriel is intellectual. Gabriel did a lot of therapy as well, his Genesis work is very out there, he channeled that energy differently in his solo career. A lot of the songs on Us were drawn from his breakup with a famous actress he'd either been dating or married to - can't remember, and that breakup caused him to seek therapy. AND, try listening to The Passion - by Gabriel. ALSO, watch "Come Talk to Me" from this same tour. The whole concert was recorded and released - it's the Secret World tour. More on WOMAD - which exists to this day and is held in the UK, Australia and Spain. realworldrecords.com/features/womad/womad-giving-the-world-back-to-the-world/

Definitely worth watching the video of the whole concert. He has an amazingly talented band and vocalists from all over the world and is super supportive of world music. @ChrisEchoes
@ChrisEchoes Месяц назад
I hate to break it to you but there is a decent amount of backing tracks used on this performance. Notice all the percussion sounds but there is only 1 drummer. Also some keyboard part. And then there is the fact that Gabriel himself writes in The booklet of the live album Secret World that it is “based on a live performance” which means they fixed some stuff later in the studio (something that happens a lot on live-albums). Oh, also the bass voice in the beginning is not live, but a recording of the actual voice used on the studio version. On the UP tour Gabriel was even more upfront on the use of backing tracks because he had all his computer screens out in the open on stage and you could see the backing and clicktrack being played on the screen.

@ChrisEchoes
@ChrisEchoes Месяц назад
@@davidagnew1753 I did not say he did not exist, just that certain parts (like percussion and additional keyboard parts) are on a backing track. The percussion loop at the start of the song (and that runs through most of the song) is certainly not played by Omar Hakim. All of the musicians on stage are top class and having backing tracks is in no way a problem for me so long it is for additional stuff to provide just that little bit extra. Gabriel has done that on pretty much all his tours since the So album, everyone knows it and on the Up tour it was all in the open for everyone to see. Saw it myself standing pretty close to stage which meant I could actually read what was on the screen on Gabriel’s keyboard rig. Rachel Z (keyboardplayer on the Up) had one next to her on the floor if I remember correctly.

Any artist who is confident in what they are doing in their performance SHOULD be celebrating every member of their band. It is the right and respectful thing to do for the musicians who work hard on their own mastery to make the headliner look and sound great. The bass player is the master, Tony Levin who is an incredible session player and in addition to Peter Gabriel, he's played with King Crimson, Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Alice Cooper, Paul Simon, David Bowie, and so many more. (A friend of his, the great drummer Steve Gadd, told him to try jazz, soul...). The first paid job Tony Levin had was a classical concert with Igor Stravinsky. Incredible, one of the best bassists ever, had his first job with one of the greatest composers in an orchestra with Igor as conductor. Wow! This Band was amazing, this show was great!
