He’s got a nice tasteful little band there. No unnecessary showiness, just playing exactly what the music calls for and letting the singer be heard. I love these old Midnight Special clips.
Beautiful song, bringing me back to another very wonderful time in my life. Sad to hear of your passing Gordon. Condolences to your family and loved ones. You are a legend.
So many people learn to play an instrument but only some are gifted with songwriting and storytelling abilities such as Gordon Lightfoot. Thank you for your beautiful songs. RIP
This is one of the most perfect songs I’ve ever heard. I grew up with Gordon and it never gets old listening to him. If this came out today it would shoot to #1 quickly.
One of those rare songs where no matter what you’re doing you have to stop and try to absorb every note no matter how many times you’ve heard it before
Another travesty this man did not live to see an induction into the rock hall of fame. Please induct Randy Bachman, BTO and the Guess Who before you embarrass yourselves further. If Joni Mitchell is in and Neil Young are in, Gordon Lightfoot, Bachman and Cummings, Paul Rodgers and Bryan Adams should all be in. And I'm not even Canadian. RIP Mr. Lighfoot thank you for your contributions to music and humanity.
The RnR Hall is a joke. I didn’t even really listen to BTO, and I don’t care for Bryan Adams, over Young or Mitchell, yet I can recognize they’ve had enough impact on music to deserve the same recognition in greatest music of rock n roll history.
I used to watch this show as a young teenager; this was our MTV back then :) Quality music is timeless, this song is an all-around masterpiece of lyrics, chords, composition, and that voice. Just a man, his guitar, and a microphone...and a couple of friends to round out a great performance. Thank you for sharing your gift with us Gordon, Rest In Peace after a life well lived.
"Hey - I just picked up a new album called 'Summertime Dream', ya coming over to listen to it with me?"... The Album is worn but is still spinning on the platter. Respect
It’s about time Burt Sugarmans estate made a RU-vid channel for Midnight Special. We need to see these performances straight from the source… RIP Gordon Lightfoot. Your music meant the world to me…
I knew he was a brilliant songwriter, and If I Could Read Your Mind is a masterpiece, but also what a superb performer... The world has lost a superlative talent. RIP Maestro.
I just found out today oh, that Gordon Lightfoot died last Monday, and 84 years old, I used to watch him on the midnight special back in the the 70s,80s you're in heaven now with your parents😢
We were so blessed in the early 70's with great acoustic performers. Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, Glenn Campbell, and several others.
Gene Clark, ex of The Byrds and a great songwriter himself, said this was the most beautiful song he'd ever heard. Whenever I hear it I'm inclined to agree completely.
Such an important part of my childhood. My father introduced me to Gordon when i was young. He passed when i was 18. That's 34 years ago now. This music I still share with him when i hear it. RIP Gordon Lightfoot
@@burtsugarman-pq3mp Heard your interview with Bob Lefsetz, and I thought it was fantastic! What a fascinating life! I hope somebody makes your story into a movie. Thanks again for posting this video, and for creating this incredible RU-vid channel.
An artist whom I shall surely miss. Those of you who remember him, as well as Jim Croce, Pete Seeger, Harry Chapin Cat Stevens and many others from an era; that sadly can never be reproduced. This song though, and its lyrics remind me of something I once had
An incredible song by an amazing guitarist, an amazing lyricist, an amazing voice, an amazing person whose soul went back to the ONE who created him. Hope he's singing in the Heavenlies. RIP
Gordon passed away, and then I loose 2 uncles! All in less then a week apart! This is a very sad month for me, and it's not over. May GOD be with them!!!
I have always loved this song. I remember so vividly when it started getting radio play when I was a sophomore in high school. It’s hauntingly beautiful. When I got married, I had another of his songs- “Beautiful”- played before the ceremony started. “Annie’s Song” (John Denver), “Evergreen” (Barbra Streisand”) and “Make Love Stay” (Dan Fogelberg) were also among my selections
Bob Dillon just said Gordon Lightfoot lived his whole life and never wrote a bad song. He also said every time he heard a Gordon Lightfoot song he wished it would never end. Pretty high praise from a pretty good songwriter his damn self
God puts on this earth very few people with this kind of talent. We are all blessed by the gifts this man possesses, and what our minds and hearts wander in his words and melodies anyone that ever seen them or heard him perform will always say what a privilege it was to see him in person, rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot thank you for all the beautiful music you created for the people of this planet SFJ
Ooooh , Gordon … what a blessing you were to our lives ! Ya done good, Gord! Love and gratitude from your neighbor in Buffalo. Rest in Power , Friend ! I listened to him as a young girl. I was decidedly Canadian in those moments. I remember all those heart-breaking lyrics and grew up to know what they meant. It's a killer, this one.
