If you go to the Wave in Arizona, DON'T MISS THIS!
We were recently able to visit two amazing places; the Wave in Coyote Buttes North and White Pocket in Vermilion Cliffs. Which is better?
That's a trick question. They're both completely different and both entirely amazing.
Our day started at the Wave. I have a much more detailed video about the permit process:
• How to get permits for...
And another about the hike itself:
• Hiking the Wave in Ari...
If you want to go to the wave, I HIGHLY recommend you check those out. First, because the permit process to get to The Wave is extremely complicated and very difficult. Second, because there is a lot to see at The Wave, and most people don't know that. And if you go through the pain of getting a permit, you should see everything you can. (Note that a lot of those 'extras' - Top Rock Arch, the Second Wave, the Alcove & Melody Arch - are included in this video. But the details on how to get to them are not.)
Anyway, the wave is amazing. And there is always something new to discover. On this trip we visited The Wave (of course), Top Rock Arch, The Second Wave, The Alcove and Melody Arch. We also found an area just outside the wave entrance to the Wave that I didn't know existed. We decided to call it The Third Wave. And it was a highlight of the trip for me.
Even then, we didn't visit the Bone Yard, the dinosaur tracks, Big Mac or a nearby colorful slot canyon we saw on a previous trip. Take my word for it, there is more to The Wave than just The Wave.
Leave early, have your itinerary marked and enjoy. The Wave is incredible.
The Wave is also fully exposed to the sun in the Arizona desert. And this was June. So we left early. But that also meant we finished up early. Early enough to take our friend Christee over to see another nearby rock formation called White Pocket.
White Pocket requires no permits. But it is still difficult to get to. The roads to White Pocket are deep sand. And I mean DEEP SAND. We had a lifted 4Runner with off road tires, but also felt it was important to bring self rescue gear like sand boards, and air compressor and shovels. And for good reason. The roads were worse than I remember. There is a short section right at the end that was especially deep. You could see it was littered with wood where people had gotten stuck and put wood under their tires to try to get out.
On the way, we came up on a group of three in a Jeep who were stranded. (The clutch went out, among other problems.) One of them (Robin), REALLY wanted to see White Pocket, so we all piled into the 4Runner and kept going.
White Pocket is amazing. Completely different than The Wave, but no less impressive. Brain rock, red swirls....What? How is something like this out here in the middle of nowhere?
You can wander around White Pocket to where ever you want. See something you want to climb? Climb it. Want to fly a drone? Fly it. You can camp there. You can look for dinosaur tracks, because of course those are there too. And if you look hard enough and do your homework, you can see some nearby petroglyphs as well. Because I guess someone felt all the rest wasn't enough to sufficiently blow your mind.
So what is better? White Pocket or The Wave? That's like asking if I like the mountaintops better than the deep recesses of a slot canyon....It's nature. It makes you feel small. It takes your breath away. It fills your soul. I just feel privileged to be able to see these places.

We got stuck in a jeep on our way back from the wave and the melody arch and all the other gorgeous thinks you recommended. If only we'd had a Toyota!!😅 Thanks a lot for the wonderful videos and tons of inspiration, which took us through long, dark and rainy winterdays (and there are lots of it) in Germany.

It's....just a lot of luck. Tina's won twice in person, but they don't even do that anymore. Haven't tried the new geofence/app. I've won online twice now too. Once took about 5 years. The second time it was my first time trying in about a year and I scored. Keep trying. I call it the Wave Lottery Tax and spent my $9 every month until it came through. (I'm gonna stop after this time so I stop hogging the permits, I swear! I did not expect to win this latest one.)

You can see all the branches and sticks people put in the road to get under their tires and get out after they were stuck. For a first time, you may white knuckle that part. I'm driving a 2020 Outback with new AT tires. We are super bummed that the road might be impassable. Have you ever done the 'alternate route' that takes 5x longer?? What about that last mile north from the state line? How is that? Thanks for any last-minute info your can provide!!
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona 2 года назад
I've driven House Rock Valley all the way through from the 89A. Unfortunately, it's been a while and I wasn't paying a ton of attention. Looking at an old video (2018), it looks like it's more gravel/rock than dirt like the side from the north. But I know it gets worse as you go along; just not sure where. I would recommend asking the BLM office. Another option might be to try a Wave guiding service. Maybe they would offer to drive you there, even if they don't do the hike with you? You can also call up some shuttle services around there that will take you to the Wire Pass trailhead. Either of those might have a more capable off road vehicle. (And they can probably give you better condition reports.) It would cost a bit, but the Wave is worth it. Not sure what the hiking conditions would be. It starts in a wash, so that might not be great after a good rain. Obviously use caution there. Most of the rest of the hike is in sand or on rock and wouldn't be as bad. Best of luck.

@JerryArizona

Honestly can't recall. But hit the wave first and leave the trailhead at sunrise or even before with headlamps (and the trail marked on GPS). It's a small area and gets crowded quickly. DEFINITELY recommend checking out Top Rock Arch, the alcove and Melody Arch. There's more to see, but if you're on a tight timeframe, those are worth it. (Melody Arch was my favorite, actually.) Once you've had your fill, head to White Pocket. They aren't too far apart. The road to White Pocket is interesting to say the least. Gets really deep sand right at the end. That place is just explore at your own pace. We didn't spend enough time there on this trip, imo. We got back before dark, but I can't remember what time. We've camped there before and it was incredible.

@Jerry Arizona those were all the things we plan on doing. Melody Arch was high on my list. We rented the vehicle for 2 days in case we do White Pocket itself on Sunday (Wave is for Saturday, March 18). But since we plan on starting while it's still dark with headlamps, I figured to try to do both on Saturday because we are already in that direction for driving that terrible road to White Pocket. Otherwise we go back to kanab hotel for the night and then drive the same road for Sunday for White Pocket on its own. Which do you think is better?

I think this is second time you went to wave. Can you suggest me which way is better to get top rock arch. I heard it is a bit climbing and steep and I am not a climber like climbing on wall or cliff but I also heard east side is bit easier. I would like to hear from you.

Yes, we did two trips. This was the second. We went in the east side both times. I'm not a climber either, but I canyoneer, so I'm comfortable with sketchy stuff. Still didn't feel like it was technical at all. Just take your time and pick your route that makes you comfortable...and don't be afraid to slid on your butt. If it looks too sketchy, don't do it.

May I ask what month u were there. Sounds very windy

Can't remember when this trip was. I want to say May, but not positive. It's hit or miss with the wind out here. Seems to be windy more often than not. The heat is the real risk on this hike though.

Somehow it seems so unfair to experience the Wave 2 or 3 times when some of us will never even see it once….damn lottery….we love your videos, but that may be the only way we ever see it……

My dad and I went were in that area and didn't bother wasting time with wave permits, we used that time to hike cathedral wash, buckskin gulch, and camp at WP, vermillion cliffs trip complete.

We wouldn't have tried if it weren't for Christee coming in from out of town. The whole time I was up in Melody Arch, I kept saying "I never thought I'd be here again". We just got lucky. But don't worry. We won't be competing for Wave permits again for a very, very long time. And the permit system is the only thing keeping it from being destroyed. I'd rather have never seen it once than have it not permitted.

I hope WP stays primitive, it's getting more exposed, it is a special place and not for people to post influencer pics in a dress holding a rose, it speaks for itself

The roads seem to be worse than when I was out there before. Inaccessibility helps with crowd reduction for sure. On this trip, it wasn't any more crowded than when we were there maybe 5 years ago.

@@JerryArizona that's great news, I remember the deepest part was right before you got to the actual site, I used momentum and surfed probably 20 yards and made it.
