I've gone through about 10 videos and nobody talks about how to get your chicken to lay eggs in the nesting box in detail. I finally found the answer to my question! 😂. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I just put ceramic eggs in the nesting boxes also. My girls are 18 weeks old now. I can’t wait til they start. I go out every morning like a child on Christmas Day.😂I have 15 hens. Rhode Islands, Buff Orpingtons,Bared Rock and CooCoo Marans.

Great idea, got some new hens coming up, and got the same nest box, haven't built it yet... I've got another 2 months before laying begins... just in time for the new hen house. I've also got my eggs already marked as well. I appreciate the info. Blessings

Great info, thanks. When we had a problem with king snakes getting eggs my Dad put golf balls in the nest, I will use bird netting, snake gets tangled up in the netting I remove to a better location for both of us. My chickens started laying July 1st. at 7 months, Welsummers, Buff Orpington, and Road Island Red yard mix. I am finally getting 6 a day out of 11 hens. I just started incubating 22 Khaki Cambell duck eggs.

Built my nesting box a week before they were laying, just in time. You know when some do that seagull sound. Btw been using large river rocks for the eggs shape pretty close to size no issues so far.

the irony is i like that some of my chickens are laying on the floor by the sliding door. my chicken run gets slippy muddy to walk in for outside nest boxes and I have to climb in the coop to get eggs from inside.

And when mine go to lay, I love watching them tuck the ceramic egg under them...ours just started laying 2 weeks ago and it's amazing how their instincts kick in!

I have almost talked myself into building a hen house out in my backyard near my swimming pool. One of my questions was, how do I get the eggs out and I think you've just figured it out for me. Thanks. Another one of my questions is protection from predators. I was going to leave the little door open all night, but the ramp leading up to the door will have two insulated metal strips going up each side with fingers interlacing, but not touching and I was going to put one of my fence chargers on it. Do you think that'll work? 🤣

Different breeds start laying at different ages, but it's safe to say they will start "thinking" about laying at 4 to 5 months old

Mine were hatched 4/27- when should I start leaving the ceramic eggs? The 'hen ranch' I have has 2 built-in boxes, but I have 4 hens. Also, do they lay during the day, or at night? (or, whenever they feel like it?) Thank you for the tips! 👍

6 months in my experience. Some hens lay in am, some later in day.

I’m not criticizing or not you know what you’re doing but from Hengear I bought two wooden eggs with clips on them to use in my nest box, and it clipped to the rubber mat, and mine have started laying in there. But I’ve had to close off the henhouse because you’re laying there on the hen house is closed off they go lay in the nest box.

I'm rewatching this video, so when I build my hen house, I can get things right the first time. I'm a great one for reinventing the wheel. You would think after 74 years, I'd be a little wiser, but no. Anyway, I am going to order one of those roll- away nesting boxes, but I want to make it so the curtains are on the inside and the "front" of the nest backs up to the front of the cage which will be solid metal, with only the egg tray thing sticking out. That will allow the hens to go in and out, have some privacy and also facilitate my getting at the eggs, but predators will still be unable to get inside. Sound like a good plan or am I just reinventing the wheel again? EDIT - The side of the chicken coop adjacent to the laying boxes will be hinged, so I can raise it up and clean everything inside, then resecure it to keep out predators.

Most of the roll away boxes are bi directional. You can mount so you can get eggs from outside the coop

Most of my girls went in with no trouble. But I had a few that balked at the idea. For one batch of chickens I did put some hay in there to get them started. Then I gradually removed it a little by little until there was nothing there. You might wanna give that a try.
