If You Own A Worm Farm "DON'T DO THIS" Overheating and ESCAPEES

I have a large worm farm called a Hungry Bin and it holds a lot of compost, especially when you refill it after doing a full worm cast harvest.
I made an error of putting some compost inside this worm farm before it had fully broken down and gone through the heating cycle.
This made the farm overheat and lots of the compost worms tried to escape.
I was able to solve the problem by just placing new wet bedding of cardboard and newspaper on top to help the worm farm cool. I am fairly sure they are happy now and will get back to doing what worms do best lay castings and breed.

My worms used to cruise the inside sides and cover of my Hungry Bin all the time. After I kept the lid up and used 4 layers of landscape cloth as the cover (secured with a bungy cord), they stay put and are now very happy. I think it's because the lid of the Hungry Bin lacks adequate air flow.
@martysgarden

Yes, it does need more airflow. I may do a DIY on that in the future,,thanks for the tip!

Hey I have had the same problem and it is hot. I saw someone who put ice in every so often. I put a pile of shredded paper in cause I thought they were a bit damp. Thanks now I know!!
@mooturner
@mooturner 4 года назад
Yeah, we had a few > 40 degree days in Sydney this summer, and I put a big block of ice (made in a Tupperware container) on top of the blanket. Worms loved it. I checked in the afternoon (temps were like 42 degrees) but all the worms were under the blanket near the ice. The first hot day for the summer I didn't have any ice, and there was a mass exodus of worms out of the tap which I left open. The problem was that there was water in the container underneath, and so all the worms that went out the tap drowned. It was a bad day, particularly because I didn't notice until the following afternoon and by then the smell of rotting worms had set in...

Matt Turner yea I am in Sydney also. My hugelculture raised bed heated up so much that steam came out the holes I dug!! I just checked my worms and they are still trying to escape but ist much cooler in there with the wet shredded paper. Because I am just beginning I thought I had done something wrong

@waynetadlock9719

Turn it and water it like a regular hot compost attempt. By 2-4 heating and cooling off cycles, you should notice that it no longer heats up into the same temperature ranges as it did earlier. That's a good clue that thermophilic heat generation should be minimized.

When my worm bin heats up i add ice to cool it off, as the ice melts it percolates through the bedding and flushes out any anaerobic pockets and keeps bedding cool and fresh

How much ice and how often? Mine is consistent in 80-85 degree conditions but I have a fan facing it to keep it slightly cooler
@kicknadeadcat

Try two layers of burlap on top and one or two layers on the bottom. When it gets hot they move to the corners of the bin under the burlap to keep cool. Also wet the burlap on top and place a small fan on a timer. One hour on 5 hours off. That should cool the bin off. I always have my bin open they have never tried to leave…..

Will my worms be fine if I would to put them in 40 -50 degrees Farenheight Here in USA cause right now it’s like 45 degrees and I’m giving them fresh lawn clippings and a banana theve even some of the banana but if I get more worms will they thrive and lay eggs in this kind of mildly cold weather, do you have any tips Thanks Marty🤗

My worms keep escaping from the bin and I already covered the bin amazing they can still sneaked from the holes 😅
@martysgarden
@martysgarden 3 года назад
There maybe too many in the bin, or they want to leave for some reason. As long as it's not a mass migration leaving then it's quite normal. I have compost worms everywhere through my garden because of escapees. I also have traps placed around near the farms for them to recongregate. 😀
@markblairharley2890
@markblairharley2890 3 года назад
Another reason why worms want to escape Is, They like being in the condensation on the walls of the bin. I now leave the lid off my bins And use cardboard or leaf litter instead I have had no more trouble. Except more fruit flies
