An excellent video so thanks for making it. I joined the Caravan and motorhome club and it turned out to be a bit of a life saver. I have wild camped since the eighties, but with a motorhome it can be a bit harder to find places these days. It is well worth going to the CL sites and meeting others while you're there also.

Putting in my five pence worth - The Camping and Caravanning club sites - as their name says, includes camping facilities for those who don’t own caravans or motor homes. They tend to be more “rustic” and typically have less hard-standing facilities. As my family grew older my teenage sons didn’t want to stay inside the van and preferred to camp outside. What used to be the Caravan Club (now includes motor homes its title despite the fact that for many years it’s members saw motorhome users as a lower species) are generally very “shitty” about tents. They allow absolutely enormous awning set ups - and in some cases they don’t police the parking of cars next to the caravan - to the extent that some setups encroach on other users. So we frequently found ourselves in ridiculous debates about whether our directly attached tent could be “classified” as an awning despite the fact that it was far smaller than most awning setups. The club managers used to argue that our tent did more damage to the plot - which was nonsense - firstly because we didn’t stay for two weeks at a time (as many caravaners did). Generally our motorhome and tent usually fitted quite conveniently on the hard standing only and we did not even use the grass alongside. All in all, we saw the Camping and Caravanning club as “friendly” because they were far more laid back about how we set up and rarely “quoted the rules” at us. Whereas, all too often we were threatened by staff at the caravan club with cancellation of the holiday - on the day we arrived - because we were breaking their “rules” by having a tent attached to the motorhome. Generally, once we had set up and proven how little we affected anybody the mangers were usually gracious to us and apologised for the fuss they had created. But holidaying in a motorhome with two parents and four male teenagers we did not really need the extra stress each time we arrived somewhere. Another serious problem the caravan club had - and I don’t know whether this still exists - was that people were allowed to book several sites a year in advance and then cancel off whichever one they didn’t want to go to in the week before. This meant you often could not book ahead at popular sites and all too often had to gamble on last minute cancellations in order to stay in certain areas. Also, there was no restriction on the periods of stays - so frequently you were up against pensioners who would book from Wednesday through to Saturday - I.e. left first thing on Sunday morning - which often prevented people who had to work from arriving on Friday/Saturday and having a weekend or a full weeks holiday. In short, it was a chaotic free-for-all. And as the membership grew, it became less and less possible you could ever get the holiday you wanted. A few years ago we left the caravan club. It wasn’t worth paying a years membership to not be able to camp anywhere we wanted to. Having said all of this - club sites were always cleaner, friendlier, more spacious and less expensive than commercial camp sites. You only have to visit the worst possible versions of these once, to never want to use them again.

New to your channel and finding it very informative. We have just retuned to a Motorhome as due to wife's health can no longer carry on with caravan. We have been members of Caravan & motorhome club for many years, but are not happy with the increase in site fee's so have started to look for more Private sites, and after watching your channel more Park Up's. As you said different things for different people.

We've been members of both clubs since we bought our motorhome 3 years ago. We tend to go back home to Scotland for a week each year and have been using the Camping & CC club site at Moffat as the ideal stop off to break the journey to and from the Highlands. This year however they've got a minimum of two nights (even in midweek) We have successfully managed to book six single nights including three single nights at Caravan club sites (including a Saturday night) at the end of July without any issue. I did a search on the Camping & CC site to see which sites in Scotland would allow a single night booking and was shocked to find it was only possible on the one at Dingwall. Since we rarely stay on a site for more than one night while touring I'm sorry to say that membership will be of limited use to us and we probably won't renew to the Less than Friendly Club when it's due in August. Very disappointed!

Club sites are fun vacuums, ie you’re not allowed to have any. Everyone is asleep by 9pm so don’t make any noise. Doesn’t really matter as all the old duffers have prebooked every pitch for every possible vaguely sunny weekend anyway. We gave up on sites and used CLs before giving up on the clubs altogether. Just use Britstops and pitch up.

As you say living on the Isle of Wight, one ferry journey discount pays for my membership, anything else is a bonus!

If my understanding is correct the CS & CL sites are very different to European Aires as you can camp (put your chairs out, cook on the barbecue etc) rather than park and for longer times. Are there similar facilities in Europe to the CS & CL sites?

Hi Kate we live in Isle of Man we get no discount on our ferry so for us it’s no good we joined for a year and a waste of money

Just had a quote for motorhome insurance with the CMC, very expensive, £200 more expensive than best deal so not a great start as far as my exclusive members benefits go.

hi can you please clarify, if ones gets a membership for the year so they can stay at any campsite of the company FREE OF CHARGE?

I use the toilet waste area and fill up with water shoot off . All for zero price at the club's

Camping and caravan club . Far from friendly . Would not let us stay on site as we didn't have our own shower facilities and then would not let us fill a 10 litre water bottle .

There a complete waist of money , we were in one if them for 3 years and found that the sites were more expensive than private sites, they were mostly run down with out of date toilets and showers and you have to pay around £60 a year to be a member lol No thanks .
