Brock the shop looks great. There are some very good suggestions from other commenters that help make your slab mill table storage better. You have really been hard at it lately. Great job!

If you have a power oulet close by, i would suggest using a winch to raise and lower the 2x4 frame.
@richowell3649
@richowell3649 8 месяцев назад
If you drop the 2x4 on the wall and attach the hinges to the top of the board it be able to be put all the way tight to the wall.

And if he can get the frame flat to the wall it won't sag from being suspended from a cable in the middle

A wireless atv winch would work great to pull the table up.

Get a smaller cable and a cheap hand crank boat winch.. mount the winch off to the side of the table to the wall .. easy peasy..

If you've ever thought about having a shop crane, consider this. A cheap harbor freight electric hoist mounted to a unistrut trolley system on the ceiling could be used to raise and lower the table when you need to, AND you could use it around the shop for hoisting other stuff too. There are plenty of youtube videos on unistrut trolley hoist systems. Yes, you'd still need a secondary method to secure the table to the wall in the raised position, but I argue you need that as a safety factor anyway rather than relying on the cable. Also, you'd need to find a clever way to detach the lifting hook from the table after you raised it, so you could keep using the hoist for other things. Or just go up a ladder. Anyway, the shop is looking great!

Howdy Brock! Could maybe add another 2x4 between the wall and the frame. That should let you pull the frame up flush to the wall, and still should have enough room for the rails between the frame and the wall. Getting the frame fully vertical will make it easier to secure to the wall. Then just a short chain or something can get clipped into another eyelet or something on the frame as a safety. Same thing with the end of your cable. Put another loop on the end of the cable you pull on and clip it to the wall under the frame. Just my 2 cents worth... but what do I know. I have to be nekid to count to 21... so... Good job and thanks for sharing 🤠

I would extend the standoff on the back so that it could fit flat against the wall.
@DUSTEATER2
@DUSTEATER2 8 месяцев назад
I agree with Keith, add a 2nd loop higher on your cable for your tie off point. Unless you need to lower and raise that table every day I would not waste my money on an electric winch. If you were to raise the table straight up to the ceiling an electric winch would be ideal. No more used up wall space.

What if you raised the hinges up on the wall support board so the rail misses the board. You should take the cable and run it across the top of the wall and then come down to a hand winch or a 12 winch so you can raise and lower it by a winch.
@donalexander4083
@donalexander4083 8 месяцев назад
personally i would use through bolts instead of lags , but then again i tend to overbuild things just a tad bit the other thing i would do is to redo the hingepoint so that it would fold up tight to the wall (perfectly vertical) the benefits of that should be readily apparent really good idea getting that off the floor 😃😃😃

A few suggestions: 1. Two clips per loop for safety, your whole load can drop because of one loose nut. 2. Turn the clips around so the saddle is on the long part of the cable. 3. Allowing the load to hang on those cables the way it is will result in warping the frame. Consider lowering the 2/4 about 2" and put the hinges at top. Or the easiest thing to do may be to rip the top off of the board then put another under it to help carry the load. 4. Hand winch.
@todd9453

A good friend of mine in the construction trade always said..."you don't saddle a dead horse". i.e. the saddle (clip) always goes on the live side (long side) of the cable. On a construction site MIOSHA will get you if you do it backwards.

Add a pulley to the table. Solidly attach cable of at top of the wall, then run it down to your table pulley, back up through the upper pulley and down to pull it. 2 to 1 mech advantage. No winch needed. Also: Should wire rope clips have the U-Bolt section on the dead or short end of the rope? The U-part goes over the dead end, while the live end rests in the clip saddle.
@TonyRicci123
@TonyRicci123 8 месяцев назад
Cool concept. Not sure but it look like you used eye hooks on the table to run the cable through I would have used spring hooks so I can easily detach them when I go to use the table. I also would run the cable down the wall to the floor then to the right or left to the column back up to waist height or chest height onto a hand crank Don't think you need a electric hoist. Also I would have two chains connected to the two columns wrap them around the 2x4s of the table for safety when it's up in place.

One pulley does not change the weight of the table. So why have a cable Lift it and have a center latch.Then walk to each end to secure with other latches.
@hpw59
@hpw59 8 месяцев назад
The center mounted cable is going to interfere with loading whatever you put on the table. Put one pulley on each end and I'm sure you can figure out how to rig it so you could pull it up vertically using only one cable

Pulling that thick cable will get old & tiring. Especially, when you get older. You should use a kernmantle rope & apply it to a 4:1 mechanical advantage pulley system. You’ll have a longer rope, but it’s more manageable than that thick cable.

Rock Your wire clips the nuts need to be on live side of cable . Not the side of the end of cable. Old saying when putting on cable clips never saddle a dead horse.

Using 2 cable clips per wire cable loop is common practice and cheap insurance.

Great concept! Get you a small chain with a clip on the end that you can wrap around the stand and clip it as a safety catch while it is in the stored position. That way if anything fails the chain will catch it.

If you make a cable that is really going to have some weight on it not what u did but lots of weight the saying dead men have no nutz - meaning the loose end of the cable should not have the nuts on that side . So it's supposed to be opposite of what you have the cable connection. I was thinking about using the table and I was thinking that the rail would hit . If u lowered the board on the wall I think it would work better, not sure . But it's not effecting anything except looks really so it's all good . I believe u went to harbor freight , what else did u have to buy , I know I rarely go into that store just buying what I went there for lol . Happy new year to you and your family. Todd

You have a fair amount of potential energy there that would seriously damage your a hand or head if it came down. Once up I'd add a 2nd latch of some type. Also something to think of is running the cable to a bucket with weights to make lifting it a lot easier. If you do that you can lift it with a finger and then use a pin or sliding piece of wood to lock it in up position (90 deg).
@frijoli9579
@frijoli9579 8 месяцев назад
I think that cable is way to thick. It would move easier with thinner cable or rope. Mechanical latches would be best. Really like this idea though!
@JCWren

I'd consider putting an eye bolt 1/3 of the way from either edge on the front side. Use 3/32" or 1/8" wire rope and crimp ferrules with a carabiner to clip to the eye bolt. Run each wire up to a pulley, then to one side to another pulley, and then down (4 pulleys total). Put another loop in each end of the wire and both in a single carabiner. Install a hook (not an eye bolt) near the floor to slip the carabiner over. You need enough distance between those loops and the pulley so the frame can fully travel from the upright to the down position without running into the pulleys. Working load limit on 3/32" is 200lbs, so that 1/4" or whatever steel cable is WAY overkill. It's stiff and hard to work with. Use Vevor FSH-Y10+NKGS10 for the 3/32" or Amazon B09CDC1478 for 1/8".

If you do add a winch, do NOT depend on that for safety. Have a separate locking mechanism for storing the table. If you do go with a winch, consider instead attaching eye bolts to all four corners of the table , and via pulleys above each eye bolt, have the winch lift the table to the ceiling. Your mechanical locking mechanism will be more difficult this way…
