I’ve literally been on waiting list since I was 11 in yr 6 and Im in yr 9 turning 14 soon and they told me that my over bite wasn’t pushed forward that much and they said that it needs to be 5.1 mm and mine was 5mm they literally told me I couldn’t get it just becuase my teeth needed to be pushed forward 0.1mm more .

i had braces when i was 13-14, since my adult teeth came in super early. and even when they were taken off i didn’t find that my teeth were straight. my overbite hadn’t gone and my bottom teeth (my problem area) had still been crooked. i just thought it was part of the process. my orthodontist gave me my retainers and said explicitly “wear them for six months and you’ll be okay”. which is what i did. at the time my braces had came off, as a pubescent teenager, my sleep schedule was off the charts, and my retainers would obviously stop me from sleeping due to the pain. i was also depressed at the time, so i just trusted my orthodontist and didn’t think to question my very unstraight teeth or the fact that he told me to only wear them for six months after braces. it’s been about two more years since then, and i just turned seventeen. i’ve developed a click in my jaw, and am extremely unhappy with the overall look of my teeth - considering i had braces. i also just find it uncomfortable to close/clench my jaw, as though my teeth just don’t fit. i would love to be able to get braces again, but i don’t know how to go about this process, or if i would even be considered due to my age and the fact that i did have braces before.

I started going to orthodontist appointments when I was 11, (I’ll be turning 16 this August) but only went once a year. I’m very insecure about my top teeth, there’s a gap between the front two teeth, an overbite (i think it’s quite a big overbite, not quite sure though) and a slight crossbite. I lost my baby teeth very late and had to get my last one pulled out because it wouldn’t fall out. However, my bottom teeth are perfectly straight. They’re probably going to turn around and tell me that I don’t need braces, the gap will close on its own with time. I’ve been told for years that the gap will close with time, but it still hasn’t. It’s not as bad as it used to be, but it definitely isn’t going to close without braces. It’s likely that I’ll have to pay thousands to get them fixed when I’m an adult. I have an orthodontist appointment in June, and I’m worried that I’m going to be told that I don’t need braces, and that really hurts.

If you had braces on the NHS when you were young, would you be allowed to get them again. If you did wear your retainer but they shifted again and the retainer does not fit anymore. I am only sixteen, what would be my best step forward.
@bracebook1965
@bracebook1965 4 года назад
The best way forward is to ask your Dentist if they would refer you again to a Specialist Orthodontist or consider paying the Specialist Orthodontist for a private assessment and asking if you could qualify for a second course of treatment under the NHS. I believe it is possible but there are some requirements that can be region specific. Also if it is a big concern, you could consider private treatment. Hope that helps!

hello. I got referred to an orthodontist to get braces when I was 13 due to an overbite. I only had them for about 13 months and I feel like that was such a short period. despite wearing my retainers for 2 years I have a gap forming in my two front teeth and also my teeth don't even fit together properly. I've always been insecure about my teeth and now I feel even more insecure about them. Would I be able to get braces again on the NHS as I'm still 16? My case was similar to Megan’s. I am now 24 and was told multiple times that I was at fault for “not wearing my retainers”. I obtained my dental history and each time concern was logged yet neglected. My orthodontist didn’t believe that my hEDS (hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) was a factor for my teeth shifting back whilst I was under 18. I recently had a private consultation with an orthodontist who confirmed that I should have been fitted with a fixed retainer. Now I am left with a serve underbite, overcrowding in my upper arch with a bilateral crossbite affecting several teeth. I don’t have £5k to pay for something that shouldn’t have been neglected by my orthodontist as a minor. Keep pushing Megan! As soon as your 18, they will leave you to it.

How can I do a quick self assessment to see whether or not my teeth are healthy
@bracebook1965
@bracebook1965 3 года назад
You can check there's no plaque on the teeth using the disclosing tablets mentioned in the video. You can check the gums are healthy by passing an interdental brush between all the teeth (as in the video) and checking that they don't bleed easily (if they do, you need to do this more not less). The rest of the health check is based on measurements and x-rays only your Orthodontist can take, but risks of finding something are minimised by a low sugar diet and good tooth and gum brushing. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the question Taroneg. Wisdom tooth removal generally has no effect of pushing people up orthodontic waiting lists. My dentist said I should look into braces. Because I have a bite covering my lower teeth and also said I will have jaw problems later in my life. I went to the orthodontist and got my teeth checked and see if my teeth are in good condition. Next to that they made appointment to get braces. I was extremely excited because my smile before was my insecurity because of how bad it personality looked and I couldn't smile free or have confidence within myself. My orthodontist was good at his job and I was with him for 3 years and 2 months and than he left when I was still in treatment. I had to get a other orthodontist. She said I had to restart my braces treatment and get pictures of my teeth and a other thing to which I felt sick of even thinking of it. I'm still on my braces journey and it been 4 years and 5 months and 3 days now. I'm happy that NHS approved me. I probably wrote too much. I'm sorry.

Thanks for your enquiry. The most important thing will be a discussion about your allergies and finding a material (if possible) that you do not suffer a reaction to. Sounds like it is worth getting an orthodontic opinion. Crossbites qualify, generally if they give you two different bites (known as a displacement) although there are other crossbite related factors that qualify also. Waiting lists completely depend on the practice and you can call them and ask roughly what it is and where you are on it (there are often 2 waiting lists, assessment and treatment). In terms of fast-tracking, Orthodontic practices often do private assessments which allow you to skip the NHS assessment waiting list (this is normally a few hundred at most, with me it is £60). If you are talking about the treatment waiting list, the only way to skip that is to pay for the orthodontic treatment privately which is normally in the thousands range.
