I spilled a pack of mint seeds in my garden, two months later there’s a spearmint jungle against my fence. Listen to this guys advice, plant mint in pots 😂
Mint also stores beautifully just wash it and put it in a closed container with damp paper towel and keep it in the refrigerator. change the towel once and a while, I have stored fresh mint for MONTHS using this method!
Cut mint, basil or any other herb and clean and chop. Then put in ice trays with water and when frozen put them in a freezer zip bag. Use them to flavor teas, soups, sauces, etc.
Your garden looks so darn healthy. That's the thing about gardening trying to keep your plants looking green and healthy. I need to learn all the science and tricks/tips. Beautiful mint ☘️
Mohitos! Use 12 leaves of mint. 2 lime slices 1 teaspoon white sugar, or more to taste ¼ cup ice cubes, or as needed 1 (1.5 fluid ounce) jigger rum (such as Bacardi®) 4 ½ ounces diet lemon-lime soda (such as Diet Sprite®) Directions: Place mint leaves, lime slices, and sugar in the bottom of a glass and muddle with a spoon until mint is crushed. Fill the glass with ice cubes. Pour rum then soda over the ice; stir.
If you cut back the mint every week and put in a glass of water on a 4" stem minimum and in a week you will see loads of shoots coming from the bottom and plant. You will have loads of beautiful mint plants.
We also dry it out so we can use it in winter. I do let my mint grow in the wok areas of the yard. It’s pretty and smells amazing when I mow just a little bit of it.
Yes, what you don’t wanna do is plant it in the ground. It takes over your flowerbeds and your flowers will no longer bloom.😞 I’m solving this problem this fall.
All of my older relatives had tons of mint, so I grew up thinking it would always be everywhere… I need to get some more mint started. We ate it and drank it all the time.
We had mint in our yard many moons ago. It was practically the only thing that grew under our brown thumbs. Yes it spreads but not anything crazy. We loved that big ol mint bush.
Thanks for the tip! Two years ago, I made the mistake of planting it in the ground and it has taken over!!! Didn't know about I was supposed to keep it nipped back so it has tall, beautiful purple flowers...the hummingbirds love it! In the fall, I'm going to dig it up and put it into "several containers."
Thank you for these invaluable tips on how to prune, harvest, and MAINTAIN the plant! Just started to try growing a few plants again - but keeping them alive for long periods of time has always been the challenge…
Oh mahhh ahhh! My mint plants sent out runners ALL the time. You gotta watch ‘em. Sneaky rascals. Climbing into other pots near by, too. Keep clipping!❤❤
Be sure it doesn't grow out the drain holes into the ground. I keep mine up on some bricks so there is a small space between the bottom of the container and the top of the ground.
Mint is extremely invasive so do not just throw the mint stems on the ground!!!!! Put them back into the container they came from or burn them. I’ve got mint growing in places I can’t stand it!!! I dug all the roots up and it still is growing in my yard.
You should do one on lemon balm also. It is truly the best thing I've found for a potent calming effect and bonus it has zero sedating effect. So you can use it before bed or during the day when stressed. It works so well because the plant is unique in that the dried leaves have by weight around 30% of the active compound. Normally extraction processes are required to condense down actives in plants to get a powerful effect but not with lemon balm. Fresh or dried leaves just eat swallow 2-3 and down some water or make some tea. Potent and taste is pleasant too. Amazing plant to know about.
Great advice! I have 5 flavors(chocolate is my fav)😊 yes it goes wild, in 1 of my compost piles😳 but we let it(plenty of peppermint) & 1 of my raised beds from last year🤷♀️the orange mint somehow🤦♀️
I have three cobtainers of mint because it will bully other plants out of the pot, too. I am thinking of actually replacing my grass with mint just because it smells so wonderful!!!
I planted mint all around my house to stop the ants from getting in. Works better than the over the counter bug sprays and professionals we paid for before.
Love this valuable info - thank you so much! How do you ensure cats (and other animals) don't soil your mint. I believe catnip is in the mint family and cats are rather drawn to mint.
I love the way you are so very helpful with all of your wonderful tips & education on plants, yet you keep it simple enough for everyone to understand the how's & whys! 💜💜💜
I’ve had a lot of trouble growing mint in general. It would die of for seemingly no reason and then come back a few days later. It would look wilted and sad despite being watered regularly and then spring up out of nowhere. It wasn’t over or under watered and it had plenty of light, so I’m at a loss😅
🌸 I do have mine in container as my mother told me about it spreading like wildfire It did flower once and now I have it spread in different places in my garden 😂🤣 I have the original parent in pot and her larger babies in 6 bushes around my garden. It’s beautiful but I now noticed other smaller bushes being established, so I gifted the new babies to my friends…..when he said don’t let it flower it’s good advice not just to keep reaping the leaves throughout warmer months & possibly into winter when you take it indoors like I do, it also prevents it spreading like a weed lol
I have an allergy to mint. Strangely I can have peppermint tea, but fresh garden mint makes the inside of my mouth itch. Took me YEARS to realise as I was just never drawn to it. 🤷🏾♀️
I grew ginger mint this year, it's so pretty and such a good shade over for the roots of biggie plant I have some I use for mint and others I just grow to grow 😅
We inhereited a lovely rose garden in a house we rented. Gourgeous white, topiary type roses. Someone planted mint in the bed…. In five years we never managed to get that mint under control
I let mint take over by my cabin.... because why not ;) wonderful when i cut the grass in the area, always get nice shots of mint in the air here n there where it started to spread more from the original planting spot
So I have planted mint in the ground before even in poor soil it grew well. I've grown mint in excellent soil in pots multiple times and it never does well. It either puts out long tubular stems with very little foliage and quickly goes to flour or won't come back the following year. I have a small yard that doesn't get a ton of sun, so I prefer to keep my herbs and veggies in pots on my deck that gets good morning sun.
I grew mine in the container and made a mistake of placing the container in my garden bed. Few years later, there's only few in the container and the rest are on the ground taking over the entire bed 😮. Now I need to find a way to get rid if it.
😂 we accidentally planted mint 10 years ago.... not in a pot😂. Now we rip it up like it's a weed. When we mow our lawn it smells like a mojito in our back yard, so so so much mint.
Ah, mint! It has to be kept on a leash (pot) so it won't go everywhere. I'll remember to keep on nipping off the tips for more foliage growth. Thank you!
