Yes: great to have an update of style on the great G & S operas. The original D’Oily Carte présentation always seemed so tired and stale no matter how much energy and verve went into the production But it’s important to remember that one of the chief targets of these operas was pomposity - at which, of course, the British upper classes of Victorian era excelled - and not to underestimate the intensely biting nature of the satire
This "entertainment" makes one almost wish Gilbert and Sullivan had never been born. At least then their output would not be used to showcase half-clad men waggling their backsides at the audience. This is wholly out of place in G&S. Gilbert specifically designed "family" shows. But today, little Willie and his two daddies no doubt clap ecstatically at the titillating sights seen here.
Seriously? You consider that enough to warrant it as inappropriate for families? This is hardly a big deal. There's nothing inappropriate in it. It is not done in a sexual manner. It's just a bit of fun. Loosen up a bit. Even my super strict and prudish parents took me and my brother to this as 8 and 9 year Olds. It's fine, and a nice way to get kids into theatre who wouldn't ordinarily be interested (we had seen many shows by that point but I know other kids who started their love affair with theatre through this show).
@@Voldemorty2001 "this would have certainly been quite the shock to Victorian sensibilities". Hardly! The Victorians knew about war 'en that. But dressing the chorus as warring tribesmen (with english quarterstaves!) makes it even weirder. The very words 'We are Gentlemen(! - In Japan? Gentiles?) These guys should be strutting their social position in their best kit, using their fans as weapons of society warfare, proud to the point of arrogance. PS Energetic chorus, good singing, good tempo.
