Even if your child can read the words off a page correctly, they might need help feeling and sounding like a fluent reader. That’s when a “fluency pyramid” like what I wrote on the whiteboard can help.
For more info on how to help your child be a confident reader, check out my online courses!

Thank you!!! Fluency is what I’ve been working on with my little… because of you he can READ and is on his way to skipping a grade!

If you’re putting your kid into school with other students, do not have them a grade ahead. It can lead to them declining rather than excelling and also being younger can make it harder for them to connect with their peers.
@ddfelder2

@@zeldaweeb1738 interesting perspective… if you could further elaborate I would appreciate it. He’s already in school and is in a Montessori program. By the nature of the way Montessori is structured he is in a class with children younger and older than he is…. And as much of a social butterfly he is both inside and outside of school, he has noooo problem connecting with people/socializing/making friends no matter the age. If he ever does I’d be worried about him… he just loves people period.

@@ddfelder2 That’s awesome. I’ve never heard of that program. I looked it up and it seems really great. Good to know he’s able to socialize with his classmates well. From what I’ve heard and read, people try putting their kids a grade ahead but then their kid either does well in specific subjects then struggles in others which often drops their grades which then also can drop their self esteem and cause emotional breakdown. It’s not definite but it is possible. When it comes to classmates I’ve heard stories where people really don’t like classmates who are significantly (even a one year difference) younger than them and would decide to pick on or bully them. I’ve also heard that when it comes to puberty, classmates can have considerably strange behavior which can lead to questions some younger kids aren’t ready for yet. Also if he skips a grade after elementary school I’ve heard that’s probably one of the worst times to skip a grade unless if you can get the teacher to not say anything about it. Also, from my personal experience a lot of the kids the grade above picked on pretty much everyone that was younger than them. These are just things I’ve read. Maybe one grade isn’t all too bad. Personally I’m a high school student in a running start program and I also do a little bit of tutoring on the side with being a TA at the kids section at my church. I’ve tried looking into randomly things since I’ve thought about being a parent in the far future or doing things for friends if or when they have kids. It’s great to hear about parents like you who really want to help and educate their kids! Especially, when I’ve heard about so many teachers struggling with gen alpha students to a point where they want to quit their jobs which is heartbreaking since not only is there a lack of respect with kids saying “you’re not my parent” or something, but also I’ve heard that a lot of kids had been struggling to study at grade level. (Learned all of their locations are in WA state which is cool cause I live here too and don’t plan to leave unless if I can figure out how to live and get citizenship in Ireland or Scotland. Unless if I’m wrong but it seems like a neat program. So glad to meet someone I can learn helpful and neat things from. Also, it might not be good on the internet to say where your kid goes to school in too much specifics since some randos can be relatively concerning.) Anywho! I wish you and your son good luck in life and studies and no matter the pacing in life I’m sure he’ll be exactly where he’s meant to be.

@@ddfelder2I can provide some perspective here: My brother and I were lucky enough to be taught Phonetics style learning before we went into school / kindergarten and were well on the way to being grades ahead of our level. My brother went the route of skipping two different grades. I would honestly put us both on the autism spectrum, and we were both born early in the year (advantage physically and mentally speaking for school, Jan-Feb babies) His advancement while great for him at first meant that he was no longer the oldest in his class, with the classmates he knew, and used to accomplishing work easy for his level. Once you advance a kid to a higher grade their social and studying habits will need to change, and suddenly you’re creating social habits and learning strategies that will carry forward to all interactions. He went from being a smart, if a little angry kid, to being full blown “I don’t understand most people most of the time.” Type of high functioning autism. Great guy to get to know, if a tad weird. And then there’s me who decided not to get skipped in grades: we came from a small town, I liked my group of friends I was going through school with, and was happily having a relaxed and easy experience through school. I’ve gone on to be a social chameleon that, sure, get to know me and you’ll see that I can get autistic weird too, but it’s not the kind of immediately apparent thing it is with my brother. Remember: intelligence is about more than how much you can remember. Social intelligence, emotional intelligence, physical intelligence and capabilities. They’re all just as important as “book smart” good reading types; and kids need the chance to develop *all* of these types of intelligence. Good luck!

@ddfelder2 Montessori is not regular school, though. It is a separate program. The implication here is that a student in regular school will decline, which is a statistically proven fact. My mother was adamant that I was not to skip grades, especially as being advanced made it difficult enough to relate to my own peers. Older students, particularly as you progress to higher grades, become more and more difficult to relate to and form relationships with, especially for children that skip more than one grade.
