In Sweden we have legislation that gives consumers the right to complain on any product for 3 years. If the problem is an original error on the product, a problem that is not due to handling or accidents, the producer have to replace the product or refund the money. We also have a special authority that helps consumers in these matters. This is a very good legislation that provide an extra protection. Thanks for an excellent channel, You are a source of knowledge and inspiration.

This video perfectly encapsulates why as much as I'd love to stagger my camera component purchases, if I buy a new lens and it's faulty but I don't realize that until I finally get a camera body, I'm SOL.

Interesting video and thanks for making it. In this era of so much good gear available, it's a mistake to keep using anything even slightly defective or not absolutely fit for purpose. Definitely return it and try something else.

As far as warranties go, I always make sure to buy equipment on a business credit card. Most quality credit cards offer their own warranties for all purchases, on top of the warranty that may come from the manufacturer.

My a7SIII froze during my most important client shoot for a semi-famous band’s 60’s anniversary. It was the A cam we had a crowd cam as a B and a stsge cam as a C. It deleted the footage to that point.. turns out the raveneye was faulty that iv used and that caused the freeze.

Concerning the problem with Pro Grade memory, have you tried any other brand like Sony or Sandisk? Sounds like the memory might be the problem since it began repeating the same problem after some use. Problem solving is a fun thing. Must switch brands and see if the problem repeats. If it doesn't fail using Sony memory, then you know where the problem lies. I had memory in my computer that baffled me, not knowing the problem I tried to load in a program from CD and it always failed. After many tries, I noted the failure occurred at the same spot in memory or file name. I pulled out the second memory card and the program loaded properly. Memory will cause more problems than any other part of a device like a computer and may also be a flaw or incompatibility in those memory cards.

Oh wow, I love this advice. I guess I should have tried the CFexpress but those things are so expensive… 256 GB. Yes I agree problem-solving is fun if you can figure it out but if you can’t, it’s just a headache. It may be the SD card issue. Thanks for helping out.

Joe, great video. Totally gave me a fresh perspective on picking up new gear. Funny enough, I just got my hands on a new lens and some camera stuff myself. Looks like I’ve got some experimenting to do, thanks to your insights. Keep up the great work.

After I watched this video, I’ve noticed that my a7 IV did froze for twice in a few months ago and I was still having no clue and thoughts on getting a replacement unit. But now I think I should take some action to deal with this consequence. Thanks for your video ❤

This is actually a really good video. One time I bought a Tamron 35 (and I’m a huge tamron fan) brand new. I was out filming with it and I solo film so I didn’t realize until I went back later to check my footage. It was switching between auto focus and manual focus on its own so some images will be very blurry and then the only way to get it to go back to auto focus was turn my a7iv off and turn it back on. Luckily I have a great relationship with my local camera shop, and when I showed him what it was doing when they immediately took it back and gave me another one. New one has been great.

I recently returned a new 24-70 GMII.......the lens had front focus issues; alota people don't realize camera lenses have these two actions that are critical. Now if I didn't have the experience I had with alota lenses and cameras over the years, plenty of people would've thought it was completely normal behavior of the lens...but it wasn't. Honestly speaking, most people buying used gear don't have enough experience behind them to even knows there's an issue to begin with and so all the Camera and Lens companies that sell their gear are banking on that. It really is the wild wild west when it comes to buying used gear. I don't recommend anyone who is NEW to photography/videography to buy used until they gain enough experience to understand and to know their gear is defective to begin with. If someone is new to photography/videography and want to buy used, then they're better off sticking with more recent and 1st party lenses versus third party lenses....less of a risk. The other thing you failed to mention, is that alota people buy new gear from Amazon and because Amazon doesn't have a restocking fee, they send it back before their "return by date"....these people are despicable because they don't know what they're doing, they abuse whatever they bought, then they return it, then Amazon gets it back, tests it and says there's nothing wrong with it, and then they sell it used to another consumer-----essentially passing on problems to the next consumer and that consumer is thinking they got a GREAT DEAL.....which isn't the case.....they all bank on the consumers ignorance.

Wow, what great input and advice. I love the point about not going into the used market as a beginner. You don't know what you don't know. It would be better just purchasing new and spending the extra money to have peace of mind until you have enough experience in knowing what to look for on used cameras and lenses. Also, love the point about Amazon, and how people return cameras and lenses they use without a restocking fee. This really does hurt the entire community and in turn, I believe the cost of the loss is put back onto us consumers. Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful comment.

I own the a6700 and i had it once sitting on a tripod in my studio with a monitor connected and it was turned on but not recording and it overheated after about 15 minutes. The screen of the a6700 was turned of so the only screen i used was the monitor. I use it a lot and some small things came up. I made a video where i filmed mostly 100 and 200 fps and the camera gave me the message i had to use a V90 card or higher, There is a V90 card in the camera. I turned the camera off, had the message again and i turned it of again and never had the message come up again. the first time i used it i was filming various frame rates and it overheated due to the stock low heat setting in the camera, Turned it to the max and so far no problems :D I realy love the a6700, I used the a6400 a lot before but this is in another league. I still have the a6400 but i don't use it that much since i have the a6700.

I'm an old guy. One thing I learned years ago, is that when products are mass produced there is a possibility that your copy of the product may be defective. I hear a lot of people crying about issues when they get their camera, lens, etc. Most manufacturers that produce their product(s) in large quantities are not going to test every single one. If they did, people would be waiting months maybe a year or more for their order to ship if manufacturers tested every single one of the products they build. It's just the way it is. If you have the opportunity to extend the warranty on your product, definitely do it.

Had a 6600 for 2 weeks. Noticed my screen was loose, thought it was normal...then i took out for a shoot and my screen hinge when flipped out would lock up a little when collapsing it back down. Returned it and went with the a6700
