i use the ifi gryphon as a "desktop" all-in-one at home as my bedroom setup and it is awesome. I can also take it on-the-road when I travel without taking up too much space in my backpack. Excellent review. You are spot on, it took me a couple of months to fully use / get all the features but well worth the time

When you use it as a desktop unit, don't you fear the battery would deteriorate? Is there a way to limit the charge level to 60% or something like that to prevent battery degradation?

I really like the size of this device. I was planning ro buy it to use it as a desktop setup and then since it is small, take it out on the go when needed. My one question is this juan, does this have the pass through feature ? Like when connected to desktop and playing does it still use battery power or does it use the desktops power ? Because i would be a bit worried about the battery degrading like that. i already see my btr5 battery been degrading a lot, i am an OG btr5 user. Also thanks for the video again juan. Cheers!

Superb sound, using it with LCD X and dunu 3001 pro's. The sound is clear without being overly analytical. It opens up the music, tremendous space. Bass is full, rich and mellow.

Ifi makes some great DACS, though I find their response a bit slow, nothing I can't get used to. I love the bass option on my ifi DAC 2

Would you bother using this with the Mark Levinson 9505 since they have a built in DAC is there any point? Thanks!

Could be interesting to try them out with different DACs. Each DAC kinda brings its own vibe. As a wireless option though, it might just be different for the sake of being different. Using it as a cabled option though might be fun.

Nice video! I use mostly wired headphones or simple BT earbuds like Apple Airpod Pros 2 or Earfun Free Pro 2 when I’m out. I love the iFi products so yes, I have the Gryphon but haven’t been using much of its capabilities. I use its DAC functions at my desk, connected to either my iFi Pro iCAN Signature amplifier via iFi’s 4.4mm to dual XLR output to get the iFi sound or to my tube amp or other amplifiers. The iCAN already has 4 selections for XBass and 4 choices of 3D/Holographic so I do not need the XBass and XSpace on the Gryphon but if I want it, I can still use it. I’d never really use it with my headphones directly although I did try it with low impedance dynamic headphones like the Focal Elegia, Focal Clear MG, etc.. which the Gryphon is powerful enough to drive them. I am going to try play some music through the Gryphon in my car next, just to see how much better the Mark Levinson system in my Lexus can do. I am also going to bring it along for my travels next if I intend to bring a pair of headphones with me.

I love music, my taste is eclectic. I have often dreamt about what my high end but in real life affordable setup would be. I took the plunge on the IFI Gryphon and Sennheisser HD800s headphones. You are so right about getting the settings of the Gryphon correct, it took me a full afternoon to get everything sorted as the instructions don't tell you, if you use windows, you need to install drivers and firmware. Qobuz hq streaming from PC and into the Gryphon through USB, then into the balanced 4.4mm output to the headphones. The sound is wonderful.

@@SomeGadgetGuy You should try it. My only downside about the Sennheiser phones are the 3m cables, both balanced and unbalanced. Too long. I would be happy with a 1.5m balanced cable and a 3.5mm plug adapter when not using the Gryphon DAC.

Hello, love the channel❤. I have a question please, i want to buy a portable dac, and im in between the ifi gryphon , and other dongle dacs like the cayin ru7 or the hiby fc6. I was wondering if there is a significant sound quality difference between the gryphon and those dongles. If yes then ill just purchase the ifi, but i cant find anyone comparing those 2 dacs. So could u help me please. ❤

It depends on what you consider significant. Each DAC kinda does its own thing, and there are differences in how audio is processed. That said, if you don't need the extra capabilities of the gryphon, like the line out and standalone support, then id probably say start with a dongle DAC.

Just watched and enjoyed your presentation. Perhaps you could give your opinion. I am currently running my Denon AH-D5200s through my iPhone with Apple lossless hi-res. streaming using a Hpi-Dac II (orange). To my ears, the sound is just phenomenal, especially with the use of the loudness comp and bass boost where necessary. I just wonder how much better it could get with the upgrade (at 3X the cost) of this iFi Audio DAC. Thanks.

Id say with a setup like you have now, you probably would hear something "different", but it would be up to your tastes as to whether it was "better". More to the point, for this to be more worth it, I'd say you'd want to be doing more with the various inputs and outputs, AND looking to leave Apple behind for the wireless functionality. One of the upgrades is Bluetooth, and that means only AAC with your iphone. It's silly, but getting more benefit out of hi-res audio and going wireless means using more advanced codecs than what Apple currently gives you. I'd say stick with the HipDac for now 👍
