ifi Go Bar review. A tiny DAC amp with a big sound

This week have have been enjoying the spring sunshine by testing so big boy headphones while out and about.
The go bar was super easy to use and drove every headphone I tried with it nicely.

The trouble with the ifi stuff is just the price. They look nice and sure they seem to sound fine, but you can get the Fiio KA17 for half the price or the BTR7 with bluetooth for 50 or 100 less. Run a 2.5 rather than a 4.4 and you've got the Quedelix (with BT). The moondrop, AFUl, Shangling S9. The list of dongles with the same or even more features for half the price or less is just massive.

Yes - I did not have a portable amp/dac before this as I could not justify to cost. But... the universe has provided ;)

@@CustomCans Absolutely - you can't beat free. Ifi just seems, to me at least, to have super weird pricing. Even within their own line up. Does the DAC chip and MQA cert really justify this costing double the Go Blu?

I went to a lot of parties in the 90s that looked like a deleted scene from fear and loathing or maybe human traffic. I know if I eventually tell those stories to my kids, they will think I am making it all up ;)

Good moves. The XBass (or TruBass) works really well with the Sundaras.

Yeh the Xbass is nicely tuned - does not make things boomy like some bass boosters

Apparently the big question is if high sensitivity + low impedance headphones benefit from these devices or not.

These days probably not but still happens. Pretty much every cheap thing is optimised for low imp. Maybe if the impedance is 16ohm, there will be trouble. It's usually hiss, sometimes bass is not tight for some reason.

The sundara closed have pretty incredible bass but the mids are a bit forward or some V2 modded Beyerdynamic DT770 80ohm

From what I saw online people complained about crazy battery drain. I tried some Questyle dongles as well, but holy hell you better have a phone with a powerful battery.

I only have to charge mine every 5 days or so it is not the kind of thing I would notice as much

@@chungang7037 Unihertz titan... Definitely not for everyone but I use my phone for business on the go so I like the fact I can drop it, get it wet... whatever and it will keep on rocking and I don;t have to worry about running out of battery.

IFI's prices gone through the roof lately, glad i got in on a zen dac v2 at £140 as opposed to now £229 i think il shop around if it dies honestly when brands pull stuff like this it just does not sit well with me.

It happens - component costs can go up or sometimes they start off by not making a profit to make a name for them selves in the market. I know we did a quick audit a few months ago and found that some we were making a loss on some of the things we were making once we factored in wage and component cost increases.

My evil plan worked. Those are a prototype we built to see it pitting the driver really far from the ear and angled gave awesome sound staging. It sounded terrible but looked cool - we stuck it in the video specifically to get this kind of comment

I figured that was the intent but the design looked cool ! it's kind of your version of the hd800, too bad it didn't sound good... Was it a prototype for the headphone you're planning on making ?

@@hugomottet1516 No not yet. The ones that looked like grados in the video will be the 1st pair we sell probably then we will do a closed back DT770 style thing and then if that goes well we will try a HD800 style thing

I have a question for you. Why do some headphones or IEMs raise the BASS from the EQ? The peak of the BASS from the EQ will increase and you will feel a noticeable difference. And for some other elements, raising the BASS from the EQ does not make a difference, but rather makes the sound muffled. Is it related to impedance, driver quality, or size? I don’t know that. It is probably because you are hitting the limits of what the driver can do - some drivers just can't produce super low frequencies well. Not everything can be fixed with EQing otherwise everyone would buy the £10 headphones and EQ the sh!t out of them ;)
