We modify a lot of headphones here at custom cans so thought it may be useful or fun for some people if we showed some of what we do. We will have some guides to help you repair your headphones, some design reviews if you are interested to see how headphones are made and some fun headphone projects.
You forgot to tell that as in your case, the Right headphone has a little cable extension that passes through the head band and should be checked to not have yo replace the whole cable from the plug.
It was hard to follow what you are saying. Mine are the DT 770 PRO. I got 2000 and 200 in my multimeter so I chose 2000. The ring-tip-sleeve test read 33 on the Left channel but nothing on the Right. I opened the speaker and it read 34 so the speaker is good. I cannot understand how new and expensive headphones can have a cable problem...😢
Received these today and ran some measurements on my clone rig (lines up perfectly with measurements from real GRAS 43AG measurement rigs which makes it compatible with the Harman target as a reference). Of the foam inserts the one with the hole has the most target compliant bass, trending up slightly and completely removes the mid bass hump (relative to Harman) and significantly reduces the bass roll off, both by having less of a contrast between the mid bass and sub bass and by having more volume. The other foam inserts made the bass trend downwards to differing degrees, though they were flatter. I thought I'd get this as a nice little upgrade to a headphone I already love but it's actually very noticeable. Highly recommended.
hey there. thanks for this detailed video. it seems like the drivers of the 900 and 700 could fit in either of the housing, right? due to different circumstances i might give it a try since the resell value of my 900s is pretty low since the heave a lot of marks of usage and me now needing a closed instead of an open back headphone … the sound profile will probably suffer but it should still be a decent headphone, right?
Yes the DT700 and DT900 drivers are interchangeable without the need to re-solder anything. If you are handy with a soldering iron, DT770, DT990 and most of the larger beyers will also fit the same drivers.
4.4 jack has a place for soldering a shield. Should shielded cable be used or not? Will the lack of shielding affect the sound in any way? Is it possible to experience interference and/or unwanted noises?
on headphone cables... as it is normally quite a high power signal, shielding is not really necessary and will increase the capacitance quite a lot as well as making the cable heavier and less flexible. There are some headphones that use a shielded cable like the beyerdynamic T1 but personally, I think unshielded headphone cables are better in most cases
Hey! 👋 I am just fitting my new cable cover but can't figure out if the nylon mesh goes inside the cable clamp (under the heat shrink), or if just the heat shrink goes inside the clamp (then the mesh attaches below)? looks like the mesh goes inside but only have one shot so thought i'd ask.. thanks!
Was definitely a thing for speakers years ago so I don’t see any reason headphones would be different I suspect the larger the driver the more differences will be seen, that said there’s very few people with good enough hearing to be able to tell a difference unless the speakers were really stiff and sounded bad to start with which has been my experience with some speakers in the past, I can’t say I have ever heard a difference with headphones my focals sounded pretty great straight out of the box and if they changed my ears certainly couldn’t perceive it.
Lmao love the cool toys idea what’s the point if your bored with no toys to play with lol. I found channel by accident as I have focal clear mgs that are broken and away getting fixed under warranty in the mean time I bought a set of grado 60 just to keep me going till I get my focal back but they are so uncomfortable I was looking to modify the pads and found this channel been binge watching some of your videos and subscribed now as well great content these little grades while horribly uncomfortable actually sound pretty good for the cost of them.
Do you also sort headphone amps I have a focal arche that’s got a weird crackling sound if you try connect to the normal connection sounds like it’s shorting however if I connect to balanced din connection which I normally use anyways it works fine. Thinking I should probably get it looked at and fixed.
@@CustomCans thanks for the reply I landed up just getting an adapter to use the xlr connector with the 3.5 mm jack on the grados it arrives today so will be interesting to see what they sound like through the arche amp it turns out it’s the 80x I have rather than the 60x not that I was paying a great deal of attention at the time these were never meant to be a replacement for my focals having said that I have been pleasantly surprised at just how good they do sound the pad modifications while a lot more comfortable I’m not convinced helped the sound but that pad that comes with it is only fit for the bin, yes the soundstage is a lot wider however the high end is just a bit too splashy now I will mess around with a few different pad options perhaps replacing the foam in the middle, for now I put on the larger pads that are in this video but then glued a set of beyerdynamic dt990 pads on to these looks really stupid but probably the most comfortable pads ever.
@@gges1605 Watch out - plugging single ended cables into a balanced out can damage some amps as you will be bridging the two grounds. On a balanced headphone amp, they normally have two amps, one for left and one for right and the 4 pins on the XLR can keep the left and right separate but when you plug in an adapter like that it will join the negatives of both amps together which can upset some amps
@@CustomCans ah ok thanks for the heads up, I guess if I want to use balanced on the grado I will need to replace the jack plug with an xlr connector and keep the grounds separate, I didn’t know that about the connectors I will stick a meter on it and check to see if grounds are separate before I plug into amp. That was a very timely reply thank you I just put a meter on the adapter and the grounds are connected which I would not have considered checking if not for your message so there is a good chance I would have damaged the amp otherwise. I think I will just go solder a proper plug on instead. That adapter is sold as an audio adapter as well so I expect they have probably damaged a few amps .
@@gges1605 Yes - you may be able to check with the amp manufacturer to see if it will be OK with the adapter but the safest way is , as you said, chop off the jack and solder on an XLR
I was one of the lucky few who got to try these beauties out. Wow. What an improvement! Straight off the bat I've noticed Bass & Soundstage improvements. Previous soundstage was sitting just behind my ears/shoulders, sound has now been brought forward which I prefer and has opened right up presenting much larger. Bass is now more punchy which is quite surprising, I normally EQ my XS as they have so much head room. I can now see myself rocking without EQ at times which wasn't an option previously. Installation was much easier than expected, justed needed to committ and get over the first step. Fantastic job guys, big fan. Highly recommend grabbing a pair of these when they become available. Massive thanks for allowing me to test these out, they'll be permanently staying on my cans.
It depends on your prefference - I think some modded DT770 80ohm are probably the best for most things but the sundara closed does have phenomenal bass
I opened my headphones but inside there is no plastic thing you could remove to see the springs instead it is plastic melted on and it looks different, I think it's newer so you cant access the springs, but my connections are loose its so bad, do you have any idea about this one please? thanks
This has been a problem for many Sennheiser headphones. I own the HD 565 Ovation and it's doing the same thing: Sound always cutting out on the right earcup, until I give it a light tap or two. If that doesn't work I have to unplug the cable from the earcup, spray some compressed air into it and then put it back in. That usually fixes it for a couple of days.
Just installed this mod a few days ago and I'm a very satisfied customer, well worth the reasonable asking price! Post mod, the bass is more linear, extension is noticeably deeper but still quite tight. I also agree that this mod retains the essence of the dt990 and doesn't mess up its crisp high end. I personally like a brighter headphone but if you find these still a touch aggressive in the upper spectrum, a circle cut from a single sheet of toilet paper in front of the driver does a nice job of knocking everything above 4khz or so down a db or two without sacrificing definition. Thanks for the great work!
was thinking on buying the HE1000s mostly for the headband (I know, it's quite a stretch) but I just strapped this to my Edition XS and it's so much more comfortable! I don't have a reason to upgrade anymore!
Thanks for these mods 👏🙏😎👍 I received mine and I found that it reduced the soundstage a bit and the sound was slightly more muffled, but that improve the timbre and in terms of sound presentation, you go from the front row to the maestro's seat (a bit like with Audeze), which were the 2 things I was most looking to improve, so well done ! About the stock tuning, I always prefer to use it with an EQ (Oratory Settings), applying corrections in relation to the measurements you've made.
Patiently waiting for the feedback! Low the comfort strap and ready for more soundstage! Would love the XS grills in black. Would be cool if you created a custom software eq to get that last little bit exactly how you want on top of the mod.
Nice to see a HE6SE v2 in 2024. These are fantastic, my vest set of cans and I feel no need to upgrade. Im blown away by the sound each time i put them on. They do everything exceptionally well for me (with EQ). Enjoy!
Replacement inserts for the inside of the cups without the protruding L & R letters that don't change the sound would be nice, I would buy something like that.
Sadly my pair have an issue with the cable into the socket on the left side. The connection is obviously loose as the sound come and goes if the cable is knocked or wiggled. It's a real shame, and looking at this video it doesn't seem to easy to get into without damaging them a bit
When we make XLR to 4.4 cables for people, we use the ground for the shield also if we are making 4.4 to 4.4 cables then we would connect the ground. Most headphone cables are not shielded so nothing is connected to the ground in a balanced setup
It is totally down to personal taste - the 1990 are beautifully made - they have bass that is super tight and accurate but the treble is a little harsh as standard. Some of our modded HE400se have similar bass performance without the harsh treble but don't look and feel quite as premium as the DT1990 .
The cable or connector on mine broke, send it in got replaced with one of the cables on that Y part twisted so itś never straight and months again the cable broke again. I feel vindicated that the cabling is actually bad apparently and itś not just me. And yes you can hear it move when you listen to music. The sound is nice but all the other stuff, like how the weight of the earcups and the heavy cable is only held by two glued on rubber caps.
I killed one of the eyes onthe stupid circuit board, even while it wasn't that hot, it's the second DT 770 pro which is now on the graveyard. I'm quite mad at Beyerdynamics. Always Happens after guarantee
Ive been trying to buy a new headset for gaming but im having trouble picking which headset i should get between DT770 ProX , or the MMX 300 I’m not sure which one i should go with
@@CustomCans Yeah but that's what I mean. Your new one was able to unscrew at the end. I've never seen the end part do that lol. Also can't find any at a store. Even my 150$ headset which broke can't do that. Ah well, gonna have to solder a cheap new end and see if that works. Thanks for the vid.
Tomorrow will get the limited edition together with the Pro X DAC cable with build-in mic. I hope its the perfect music making / listening/ gaming / video conference set.
