Love the original, glad they went with the type c connector. Blue tooth would be a big plus for this one., but what the heck. IFI makes good #$@t!

I'm still using a hip dac 1. This looks like a good upgrade. Interesting discussion on the glitter on top.

I think the amp discussions on Reddit are strange, no amp could possibly sound any different than another amp. Go Blu and Go Bar didn't have as much glitter.

I got mine last week. I’m not super impressed with the battery life. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m running bigger headphones.

Possible I only ran IEMs and I believe that is their spec numbers too. Supposedly it is more than Hip-dac 2 as well.

I never heard 2 but I think the answer is yes, mostly a feature upgrade over a sound change.

@@ValerieFire that is what I hear. Portable, with Bluetooth, plenty of power, AKM equipped…looks like the business. I would buy Q15 today if they were available.

I should have borrowed a 2 but jumped at getting a hip dac 3 loaner. I think they extended the battery life, all usb c, and added IEMatch. I'd guess sound quality is about the same, just a slight upgrade on features

I had the hip Dac 1 then sold it now have the ifi go blu. It has xbass xsoace and then you can do both to get a v curve if you want tbe bass and sparkle. Have the hip Dac 3 on the way to compare. Does the hip Dac 3 have x space or only bass ?

It was a loaner so don't have it, but thinking it was XBass only.

Sadly I never heard the 2, but the marketing also doesn't emphasize that so guessing it is primarily a functionality upgrade than a sound upgrade.

Hi Paul, thanks for the great review! What device did you test it with? I heard from another audiophile that the dac 1 would not play MQA on his samsung phone..

I ran through all the colors on my PC as it was easier. Even on a PC, you need to use the Tidal app and pass thru MQA decoding and the light changes. I am less concerned on MQA now as Tidal transitions out of it. On a phone, I'd think you need UAPP or another app that recognized the DAC as an MQA device. Tidal app on Android with exclusive access should work if you make sure the track is MQA which is also easier to see on a PC.

is the xbass still a bass boost up to 500hz like the hip2 ? for headphones that lacks bass it may be handy but for iems that's way too boomy, no ?

I didn't measure it but sounds about right. I would try XBass, sounds fun, but a bit too much unless you had either bright or bass lite set. Or just in it for a casual, fun session as I would do and then its fine. I liked having the option though.

Never heard RU7, but both are respected. I haven't looked at RU7, but don't underestimate the bass button and a battery for power. I am sure RU7 sounds great but I wouldn't spend that much for a dongle. You can buy a hip-dac 3 and cheaper dongle for the price of RU7.

Hi, excellent review, at this point it would be nice to have an opinion on the previous models, as I find them used for a third of the price! See if they're worth the extra expense, also because better resolution doesn't always mean better sound, there's a those who like it more analogue and warm, and perhaps a little blurry

Yeah, I had a shot to get a 3 loaner quickly but should have asked for a 2 at the same time. I have to imagine the sound is about the same, I don't think the upgraded much of the dac/amp parts if at all.

I didn't notice but I also don't use low volumes. Was that a problem on Hip Dac 2? I know some dac/amps have that issue.

@@PaulWasabii ye, I got a RU7 and a BTR7 to test stuff, hbb said my iem was running at 80 units on his cayin dap on a 4.4mm, that thing can put 1210mw on a 32ohm load iirc
