AirPods Max are slowly coming down in price… but I’ve been wondering how Apple’s most expensive headphones compare against the audiophile competition. And, in particular, the new wave of bluetooth headphone amps and DACS.

Would you bother with lossless audio on your iPhone?

I actually do, sometimes. I had BTR5 which I occasionally used with Bluetooth and as a cabled DAC when I’m stationary. I think for BT, max size should be around that. Among many others, ifi now has one too “zen blu”. But after BTR5 got bricked, I kinda stepped away from the techy and battery powered ones and ordered a zen DAC v2 desktop instead. I’ll be using Apple dongle for more mobility, and have BT IEM and HP if I need wireless anyways. Ifi one is somewhere in between for usability. Not as mobile as likes of BTR5, nor stationary like a desktop amp. I would still use them stationery. It’s just easier than a desktop amp to take it with you wherever you go. There are many cheaper options out there (e.g. Ifi Hip DAC) in this category too of course. Wouldn’t be as good as this probably, but the return starts to be marginal as you climb up the price ladder and also to consider: am I gonna utilize all the features this product provides and hence increase the price of it. Have 560s btw, great HP. I look forward to hear it via Zen DAC.

I am an audiophile and I did make it to the end of a very good video. Well done. Let me add this to the discussion. The Sennheiser HD560S is both scalable and more malleable. The Sennheiser sounds good on entry level gear and its sound will improve as your audio gear improves. Therefore its performance ceiling, although not infinite, is very high. The Sennheiser measures almost dead flat meaning its frequency response is considered neutral. If you apply an EQ profile, you can mold the sound into almost any frequency you prefer. The AirPods Max will sound the same regardless of what gear you own. Not at all a bad thing if you like the sound. My two cents worth.

The biggest weakness with Bluetooth DACs and iPhones is that the iPhone will only do Bluetooth at AAC, which is pretty crap. Far better would be a wired connection to the iPhone and a Bluetooth connection to to some wireless headphones, most of which can handle the higher quality codecs. But no one seems to make a portable DAC like that.

Good content Mark. My iPhone is my main lossless audio device. I run a pair of nice Moondrop Aria IEMs out of the lightning to 3.5mm adapter to great effect. Great $10 dongle worth the hype. For over ears I use a Fiio BTR5 wired over USB-C to bypass BT compression into my over-ears. Airplay for speakers is also lossless. So while it takes some maneuvering I’ve had wonderful audio using the iPhone. AirPods Pro are tops for convenience however.

@Mark Ellis, thanks for the video. It’s great info. A quick question about the sound quality. If you turn on Dolby Atmos (Spatial Audio) and then compare it with the high end lossless, do you find the spatial audio making the overall music enjoyment / sound field wider and better?
@MarkEllisReviews
@MarkEllisReviews 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it, Raymund. I'm not a fan of Spatial Audio/Dolby Atmos for music I'm afraid! At the moment, it appears to remove too much of the dynamics from the audio. Therefore, lossless always gets my vote!

Just so there’s no confusion, the ifi and Tea are NOT lossless when connected wirelessly, because even the best Bluetooth codec isn’t lossless.
@DB_-jj7wd

It’s lossless when you connect a wired set of headphones to the dac - Its just the connection between your phone and the device that is Bluetooth not the music once plugged in with a cabled set of headphones
@garytpaul
@garytpaul 2 года назад
But the transmission from the iPhone to the DAC still won’t be lossless as Bluetooth just can’t process that much data. The best DAC in the world couldn’t replace what is no longer there.
@thegass

It’s still not truly lossless. It falls somewhere in between. Over Bluetooth it’s still compressed. Yes, a higher bitrate than AAC or MP3, but not truly lossless like cd quality. That’s just a fact.

Solution is to connect the USB c to Lighting to Gryphon and then the wired headphones that will produce lossless throughout the chain. Any time you introduce a bluetooth connectiom wherether receiving or transmitting your gonna need to use a codec which is compressed audio which is not lossless.

Dear Mark Ellis, I know I am late to the video, but I wanted to know if when using the wired set up for the airpods max, do they have to be charged? I ask this because I quite dislike the constant noise cancelling audio, and even with the feature to "turn it off" I feel that I am still able to hear some noise cancellation/humming, although perhaps it is my imagination. I ask do to me wanting to use my airpods max with a depleted battery and just wanting to hear the pure wired signal. cheers

I'm still trying to figure out if the following setup will work: I connect my iPhone to Khadas Tea with usb/ lightning cable and then from dac I stream music to my Sony WH-1000XM3 bt headphones via bluetooth using high quality codecs like LDAC or Aptx HD which these headphones support. Any thoughts on that? Or maybe I'm totally wrong and bluetooth connection is possible only between the dac and music source, in this case iPhone?

Hi Mark - thanks for your content and great work as always - I own the AirPods Max and mainly use them with Apple TV and occasionally with my phone wirelessly - I know this is a comparison video but I was wandering if you had tested the AirPods max with a dac to determine wether the already great Bluetooth sound was improved by being wired and using a dac? Thanks 😊

You can't use wireless buds or headphones with a wired DAC or amp, in general. Even Audio46 in NYC told me it's a hopeless fool's errand to try to get "wired" performance and power out of wireless stuff. I recently bought the IFI XCan amp, though, and the Bluetooth on that, running my IPhone14 through it, and with good wired phones, sounds 10000x better than the phone should even sound. I've bought a few wireless phones and IEMs, even Sony, and they sound fine but have no power or real quality or volume no matter what. I have no use for it since I run everything through one amp or other.

Thank you for such an involving, fascinating video! You answered a lot of questions. I'm not part of this discussion because I own an LG V60 with its 3.5mm headphone jack and their built-in, unworldly 32-bit Hi-Fi QuadDAC. My everyday headphones are a pair of Bose QuietComfort 45's, which I use wired indoors. My in-home headphones are the Focal Clear Open-Back. When wired, the Bose sound much better than through Bluetooth. However the Focal's are in another league. That said, the 32-bit Hi-Fi QuadDAC is a real gamechanger. It sounds as good or better than any portable DAC that I've ever used. The DAC makes a huge difference. If you can believe it, I still use an iPod 5.5 Generation Video from 2006, with its exceptional Wolfson WM8758BG DAC.

Mark, Nice review of a couple of interesting bits of kit. Thought I’d add my two cents 1- The Gryphon puts out more power than the Tea. If you tried the Gryphon and the Tea with different headphone types (planar and dynamic for example) you’d hear more difference at lower volumes 2- there are sub category of audiophiles, some want to hear the music exactly as it was recorded, others want a various amounts of color 3- I know audiophiles who own the AirPods Max, usually just for travel 4- if you spent time with a few recordings you know well and A-B between the dongle and the Tea you’ll find a clear difference. Soundstage, instrument separation and engagement. Cheers

I was using Qudelix 5k with Campfire IEM. I eventually gave up, the wire from the bluetooth receiver to the IEM still got in the way. And the cable gets stiff since I work out with it. So I went with Shure's TW2, a truly wireless adapter for MMCX IEMs, for now, it is fine. However, I am thinking about switching to sony wf-1000xm4 and perhaps AirPods Pro 2 when it comes out later this year, for additional functionalities and better wireless interference resistance. TW2 would occasionally freeze in a complicated wireless environment, pure speculation for the phenomenon, and I will have to put it back into the case for a few minutes to come back.

@@MarkEllisReviews Definitely not Mark. It might depend on the music you prefer. For me it’s anything from The Beatles, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac to Pink Floyd, Muse, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin and Joni Michell and so on. Artificially pumped up bass affects any nuances in the melodies and different instruments IMO and blunt the overall sound because the aim is that thumping bass. I once had the honour to chat with Tony Asher who wrote the lyrics for Pet Sounds and he told me that Brian Wilson was very focussed on every sound having its “space”. Heavy drum and bass type music the bass is front and dominant and some people like that in all their music. For me it spoils it regardless of the genre. Each to there own of course

I still like my wired Bose headset with built in AAA battery noise cancelling. Picked it up for little over $200 5yrs ago and have had to replaced only ear covers and cable once (lost the 2 ended jack cable, didn't break). Like the 2 ended jack cable over single wire as they can break and be very difficult to replace. Plus being able to unplug cable completely makes it easier to store (and lose).

I just recently started looking into audio file quality devices. I've learned that wired sound is superior to Bluetooth. But Bluetooth is getting better all the time. I could not belief you made a video comparing iPodMax vx the Gryphone and the Tea! I was beside myself. I could not wait to see the video! You usual review non-Audio File equipment. I have pair VXS In Ear Monitors (earphones) I think they sound much better and louder than the AirPods Pro but no one talks about them. Anyway, I am getting slowly i into better listening devices and recently bought the Fosi Audio DS1 that goes between my wired headphones and my iPhone 11 and my Galaxy Note 8 and it definitely improves the sound and sound much louder than the apple dongle would allow. I hope not to get into a rabbit hole with audio equipment but there is so much out there. Thanks again for your presentation of this audio equipment. Thanks again.

How about those of us who have a Gryphon, and some APMs, and happen to use them together (wired) sometimes, because you have these two things meant for different purposes, but why not? It's a little bit silly, but it does work, and the APMs do sound a little more tamed, not that they need taming, but you do get a "better sound."

Personally whilst I appreciate a nice pair of headphones I have no time for lossless audio. As far as I can make out maybe one in a thousand people are even able to pick out the difference between lossless and a well encoded lossy file so for me I can’t see why I would put up with giant file sizes for no appreciable benefits. The biggest thing for me is having a nice pair of well EQ’d headphones and most importantly to actually take time to really listen to the music.

Soooo, is my insistence on having "prefer Lossless audio" in Apple Music the reason why all three of my bluetooth speakers are rubbish? I have 2 HomePod Mini's and a Sonos battery standalone bluetooth speaker. £340's worth in total. The HomePod Minis sound wonderful, when they work. They drop audio constantly. They don't work in stereo pairs unless they're both switched on together. Change songs = no audio. Change albums = no audio. Ditto for the Sonos Speaker. I've had one of the HomePod's replace by Apple. Last night I gave up and ordered a Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin speaker, which has an Aux in. If it ain't wired it ain't worth the hassle. Sound quality junky here.

@billy120745
@billy120745 2 года назад
DACs do the processing/decoding, headphones passively produce the sound. There is amplification going on in these DACs but don’t worry about that if you don’t care for it to get complicated. If you link your device to a DAC and can establish data transfer you can listen losslessly.

The thing is that the iPhone once convertes the signal to analog and the 35 dollar cable convertes it back to 24bit 48hz so there is a bit of lose due to the double conversion but I can imagine that it is better than what you get from blutooth. I tested it on my focusrite solo and I would say that the sound is different but I wouldn’t sa particularly bettter than Bluetooth it’s definitely different for me and I like both so I might be lucky with that :D

I don't get why you would ever need an extra DAC for an iPhone. You could simply use the adapter cable if you have a cable anyway. Why connect to a DAC via BT and then connect via cable... Nonsense... Even when you're on the go - you don't get the audio detail with all the noise outside...

Honestly if you want to listen to high quality audio, the iPhone is not a good source. It doesn't support the higher end bluetooth codecs and even the lightning port only supports 16 bit/48 KHz sampling rates with a wired DAC, regardless of what the DAC supports. My Google Pixel 6 Pro by contrast, supports all of the newest and high end bluetooth codecs (apx-X HD, LDAC, UAT), 24-bit 192 KHz sampling rate internally and 32-bit/512 KHz sampling rate using a 3rd party USB sound app and an external DAC (or the app supplied by the DAC manufacturer if it has one). Android also lets you control which bluetooth codec you want to use and also control the sampling rate for each supported codec (some of the higher end bluetooth codecs have more than 1 sampling rate).

I don't think it's actually lossless.... Even if you're using ldac it's still technically lossy.

Good grief I'm poor. I can't even afford the cheapest product you've just displayed. I'm still using cheap $10 wired 3.5mm earphones on my mobile 😂

Absolutely no reason to call yourself that, David! What works for you works for you - that's all that matters :)

I use Ksn iems and the standard dongle from iPhone and it sounds great to me. You don’t need to spend lots to get good sound

Android users need not apply when you want anything apple. So audiophile tech would be best for android users.
