A Few More Tips: - Use your own words (marks will be deducted for copying and rewriting) - No title required. - Write within 120 words maximum but at least 100 words or else you will be compromising content. - If the question asks for 1 point of information then write only 1 paragraph. If it asks for 2 points of information then write in 2 paragraphs. - Only include information that answers the question. - Even if the passage is written in a conversational/informal style you will only use the formal register to write. - Even if the passage is in the first person you will write in the third person. (active voice - passive voice) - Condense sentences using connectives. (especially, however, furthermore, etc.)
My teacher never tells me what is wrong with my writing... He always says its good but you can do better... And when I ask him what I have to improve he said "it's good but try to improvise it next time".... But when the paper comes I get an A, I never get A*... But since I'm learning from you I get A* everytime....so thank you very much

My teacher cuts marks randomly from my FLE mocks and doesn't help out much. She says that FLE is a hard scoring subject, so cutting marks out is the 'best' way to prepare us for IGCSE. But, thanks a lot for your videos! It helps out.
Not sure why your teacher would randomly cut marks... I assume they are following the mark scheme. Not sure it's best practice by marking negatively, either... Glad my videos are helping :)

Should we change the tense and the person while writing a summary? Like if the text is in 1st person, should we maintain that in the summary as well? Same with the tense. If the text is in Past tense, should the summary also be in Past tense? Please advise
@@parveenkhan1508 You're right... Using complex sentence structures and grouping ideas together is key; otherwise, students find themselves nearing the word limit pretty swiftly.

Hi :) I'm a grade 11 student and will be doing my igcse FLE in may june 2020. I had a couple of questions as you seem very knowledgable in this subject. Does summary writing have to be in a order of you own or is it supposed to be from top to bottom I'm not much clear about that I think i heard my teacher say it must be in the order of the text. And is highlighters or colour pens allowed in the igcse exam since I've seen many people use highlighters or colour pens for ! better responcse to questions? I'm very weak vocabulary, can you please recommend me books that could help me for my vocabulary for my exam? Hello! I have a question about summary question I want to ask you. In the question, there are usually two main points we have to write about, for example, in your example, they are "appeal of RU-vid" and "how people use RU-vid." Before watching your video, I normally attempt to answer the question separately, one point after another. What I am confused is whether it is alright for me to not answer the question(the two points) in a chronological order. In your example, your answer isn't in order, though both of the points are included. Is it only important I have got the points of the summary question in my writing? I really hope I'd get a reply from you. I've been learning so much from your channel. Thank you so much for all the amazing videos. :):)
Good question. The reason for not necessarily going in a chronological order is because invaribly you will find yourself repeating things. You want to highlight your quotes and think how you can group similiar things together by using complex sentences. That is why number your quotes helps :)

Hi there I just have a quick one. I've been watching your videos for quite a while now and I've been following your tips yet there is one problem though. My english teacher seems to have a problem with my word count because often times it is in the 80's and 90's range and she said that it has cost me marks. I'm curious as to why she thinks it must be close to 120 when Cambridge say that you must not go above 120? I just want to find out what a suitable word count is for the summary question?
write it with a pencil first if there is a word limit. that way, it's easier to edit your summary if it doesn't meet the word limit. u can rewrite it with a pen afterwards
Whilst summmarizing are we allowed to change the order of events….e.g in case the text mentions something about education in the very last lines but we find relevant points towards the beginning of the summary (e.g) something related to a student…so we can combine the two ideas right? In short…do we have to write every event in the exact same order as the text….or will it be fine to change the order?
Your approach is spot on. A summary shouldn't be a chronological order of events... Group similiar ideas together... I ask my students to highlight then number them in the order that they want them to appear.

For anyone wondering, the summary videos i watched on this channel helped a lot!! I would always get a 12 or 13 on 15 for my summary but after watching these videos i think i got that extra boost i needed to get a 14 or 15 (Hopefully lol). The writers effect in the paper was a little harder this year in my opinion because the first paragraph didnt have many emotive/strong words. All in all i think the paper went quite well so if i end up getting an A* its all thanks to you!! I do have one question though, so if we got a text type in paper 1 is there a chance it will repeat in paper 2?
Hello sir, may I ask if the phrase “one way of” is indicating an example? I am kind of confused as to which phrases show that the following phrase or sentence will be an example. Moreover, I am confused on which phrase is explanatory and which is not as I have come to realised that the main reason why I am mostly using simple sentences in summary is because I fear that my complex sentences will come off as explanatory or look like an example. Hopefully, what I wrote makes sense 😅
Did you complete this comfortably within the time limit of exam conditions -- you did say that it took a 'bit of work'? (minus the presentation to camera, of course). Or, more specifically, how long is a student expected to spend responding to this question (including reading time)?
It's a tough question... My students can spend 40 mins plus on it at the beginning of the course. I usually get them to a stage where they can complete the summary q in about 20-25 minutes.

For the summary, try and use more complex sentence structures... E.g. As a result of x happening, it was noted that y had caused a number of issues such as blah blah, and blah blah.
For descriptive writing, you want to try and aim for a more ambitious selection of vocab. See if you can learn some for feelings, actions etc. and shoehorn them in :)

Complex sentences are made up of a dependent clause and independent clause... An independent clause can stand on if its own if it wanted to; a dependent clause can't. As a result of the popularity of RU-vid, many young people are turning to creating content. The first part is a dependent clause; it can't make sense on its own. The second part is an independent clause and could be a sentence if you wanted it to be...
Hi Sir, this was an interesting video. good information. however you know how it goes with students. they always come up with "questions" which is good in a way. So the recent question was if the summary is written in one big para or many paras? I'm asking this question as I checked one igcse text book which shows a sample Summary done in two paragraphs! The question comes with 2 or 3 bullet points so is it that the summary has those many paras? Awaiting you response.
It's perfectly fine to separate your summary into two paras if there are two strands... Some students find this easier to do (actually) Hope that helps!
